@@SeanandEmilyem, most of the roads were built by English military to enable the army to suppress revolution. And export scotlands resources in the 1700’s; mostly young men for the empire armies and global colonialisation. Same shit happening now with oil, whisky revenues and now wind power.

@@SeanandEmily Tricky to say the least, I rode many of the roads around the coast and sometimes my thoughts were 'What were they thinking when they laid these' One thing your footage doesn't show is the amount of effort it takes to negotiate them. So many blind summits and corners, turns around large boulders which had been there since the end of the ice age. Mad as a box of frogs

I have watched a few vloggers that have travelled these roads, I have done them all too, but yours is the best I have seen so far, great keep it up. The drone is a revalation, familial roads transformed by the drone view.

I don't know how I missed this one. Sean and Emily, I've seen some amazing filming of road journeys in the Scottish highlands but this is on another level. How you experienced all that sunshine I'll never know because this is the worst summer in Scotland for a long time. I do like the Scottish Landscapes, vast expanses of rocky mountains is truly amazing. The Seaforth (white building with big glass panels that was behind you while you were eating your chips) in Ullapool did some really really nice food. We stayed in hostels when we did the NC500 last year, best one was Ratagan Youth Hostel, it was right on the edge of a Loch. Which was a welcome sight after a long day on the bike, my brother and I went for a swim and watched the sun set on the Loch. Wee Mad Road was a testing road, lots and lots of tight bends and twists.
I was riding the NC500 before it had a name but your drone footage literally takes it to another level. "I could be in Croatia".... yeah, and I could be in Scotland right now, cold and rainy here! 🙈🤣

Glad you watched the Lebanon Vlog, not many people have seen it as it was early on in the channel but it's one of our favorite trips (think it was 3 or 4 episodes in the end) the temple we visited was magnificent and the food was delicious.

This was my favourite so far on your "Scotland Series", though I've stopped part way through it to make this comment as my wife has briefly left the room. I LOVE Gairloch, Poolewe, Ullapool and the hills/mountains of Assynt. I will be going back up there to Ullapool (and places around) in less than 6 weeks. Can't wait...

Another great episode.I write as it was 35 years ago I first arrived in Ullapool with perfect weather and with 2 pals on bikes after travelling from Aberdeen to John O Groats then west and south.Next day was the 1st time we did the empty Applecross Pass (no NC500 then, no internet etc) .Only map showing a twisty route.Our trip with story& photographs of the pass (remember them😅)was a 3/4 page article in BIKE MAGAZINE, Jan1990 issue .I do believe...the 1st ever bike magazine article of the now world famous pass !!

It will not surprise you that we rode round Europe in the 80's, I remember at the Belvedere Hotel on the Furka Pass , we walked 100 metres to see the gigantic Rhone Glacier ,where the river begins,we even could walk inside the Glacier in a tunnel walk for tourists!Long gone now.
Wow Switzerland in the 80's must have been amazing and something we would have loved to have seen. Yeah it's so sad that the glacier has retreated so much and that the Belvedere hotel has been long closed. You can still walk inside the glacier tunnel and they cover it over in the summer to try and protect it. A magnificent area for sure. So glad you got the Sunshine for Gairloch to Ullapool and north that's a great section to have the sun shine upon . Cal Mac run a Hopscotch ticket for touring the Hebrides . Knowing now it was May you were up you got it bang on this year , our may had good weather and getting the warmth with the whins and broom in flower does add that contrasting burst to the moorland and hillsides and the birch leafing up. If you had a traditional Minch westerly pushing ashore that entire coastline can be sea level grey cloud and rain so wet it would penetrate lead.

@@SeanandEmily debateable if its the best in Scotland but if you're riding through Torridon then some of the best views are up side roads, the best of which I would say is the road out to Diabeg which is itself spectacular. All of Wester Ross is pretty spectacular especially if the sun is out and its not midgy season.
Lovely Gairloch and Ullapool, gateway to the islands, don’t get drinking malt with the local fishermen, don’t ask me how I know😆🥃. You had lovely weather as I love the run up north of Ullapool (a lot of the peaks were once volcanoes), a very special part of the world. Note to self get back up there. PS. The joy of you both appreciating your surroundings is very uplifting, never lose that feeling.
Hahah had a similar experience with Austrians and Schnapps 🤣 - never ends well! We thought they looked like volcanoes (forgot to look it up). Thanks very much, we still get teh same feeling today exploring new places than what we got 7 years ago when we started touring together. 😊

Another great one ! The ‘emigrants’ were forced from their homes in the most part - by the landowners who wanted to graze sheep on the land. It was part of what is known as the “Highland Clearances”. Around Gairloch, Plockton, Poolewe - you can see the effects of the Gulf Stream and the number of palm plants on the shores. Inverewe gardens also benefited where one person (forget his name) planted rhododendrons from around the world (different types). You should have tried the fish from that place on the front- It’s the best fish and chips I have had (continually). Your findings of hotel prices are scary - I’m not sure how a hotelier can look you in the eye, charging those sums. The gun emplacements were probably inshore batteries for the protection of the merchant ships which were marshalled there before setting out on Atlantic and Russian convoy duties in WW2.
Thanks glad you liked it. Yeah we have subsequently learnt about that dark time in history -terrible! We actually wondered why they would have made such a move but that does explain a lot of things....perhaps they should have added that to the info plaque. Yeah we were shocked by the price of Hotels, should have brought the camping equipment. Some also made us feel like staying one night was an inconvenience for them 🤣. It's crazy how this trip cost the same if not more than our Heading North Series!
Grab the ferry from Ullapool, for Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis, 2.5 hrs, then travel another 30 mins, and you could be at our Croft! We're on the West Coast of the Isle of Lewis.. you'd love a few leisurely days going through the Outer Hebrides. Safe travels!
May is one of Scotland's busiest times. The weather is generally pretty good and the midges aren't out in force yet. I've generally visited in or around May and always book well in advance. Even then, booking late the year before it can be difficult to get your favourite spots.
Really? We were there in the second week in May and didn't really see so many people or camper vans. But hotels availability wasn't great to maybe you are right and we just were in places with less people. If you know were it is you're going to be be for sure booking ahead is a good idea ...probably can save a lot too.
@@SeanandEmily It is also possible that the madness of the whole NC500 thing has started to calm down now. I hope it has as it's actually put us off visiting for several years now. Some of my favourite tales are of riding my bike in the Highlands before the NC500 came about and not having seen anyone for literally hours. It's like having all that wonder to yourself. I then led a trip the year they started advertising the NC500 and again the people I took up there were amazed at how quiet it was. We had such a great time that we did the same trip the following year and it was madness. It was just so incredibly busy. And everything had started to go up in price as well! The pie shop in Lochinver for example had increased their prices by a huge percentage. This said, there were some benefits. More fuel stations for example. But yes, traditionally, those that know visit in May and June. And those that don't visit in July and August and get plagued by billions of wee, vicious bity things that seemingly come out armed with chains and baseball bats lol!
Yeah it's crazy how when a name is put on a route it becomes a 'thing'. Good for local economy (although I'm not sure how much those camper vans actually bring in as they are very self contained). We try to do most of our tours super early in teh season or super late for this very reason -will happily take a bit of rain and cold over scores of people. Don't wish to complain about prices but it wasn't unusual for hotels to be asking £200 a night plus the £50 for dinner a 4 week trip starts to get out of hand (or pocket should i say lol) haha glad we missed the Midges for sure!

Weather wise, i have memories of many trips up North on two wheels where it was clear blue skys for days on end. It has been miserable for the past two summers tho, i'll give you that but what you got is not that unusual tbh.

At the start of this video. The emigration to Nova Scotia (New Scotland) wasn't a peaceful event in Scotland's history. It was basically a forced eviction and way of life of the Crofters. Look up the 'Highland Clearances'. It wasn't that long ago either. Between 1750 to 1860. You were at the Bridge/Tunnel in Glasgow at Central Station in a previous video. That is called the 'Hielanman's Umbrella', cos the 'Highland's Men' evicted from the highlands to Glasgow, would shelter from the rain under it.
Yeah a few have since mentioned this, that information plaque certainly had some missing information. Thanks for highlighting the full story. The name Hielanman's Umbrella was also mentioned but we didn't know that's where it originated from. Lots of history of Britain just isn't taught - remember being taught a lot about the romans though 🤣 Thanks for your comment.

We both picked up a cheap pair of glasses as there is no internal sun visor in our helmets and it was getting a bit hot with the lid down all day. Lol Emily is not the problem 4 items of her clothes is about the same as 1 of my T-shirts 😂 and lets not even mention my trainers 🤣

Hey guys, another great informative video, Scotland is on our Bike’it list, We have just got back from a months tour which consisted of Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, then back through France, I know you guys are based in Switzerland. This was the first time we have stayed there, And what an amazing week it was., We have passed through Switzerland many times on our way to Italy and Austria but never spent any time there. We thought Austria and Italy were beautiful countries but Switzerland played its trump card, we stayed in Stoos (that was an experience in itself, didn’t realise that you couldn’t take your bike to the top of Stoos) 🤪🤪🤪 how do you guys manage to get so much time away from work to do your travels?
Yeah Switzerland is indeed spectacular, a lot of people bypass it as they are scared of getting a speeding ticket lol -but there's so many fantastic routes in this relatively small country. haha is Stoos the one with the round pod like train that take you to the top? The heading West Series started May, so I guess the NC500 part was mid May (statically the driest month in the Uk). But we were incredibly fortunate with the weather. 👍🏻
I don’t know where everyone thinks it’s unheard of? We normally have fantastic sunny days. This year it has rained more which is not normal. Our burns dry up normally not this year.

The yellow flowers are Sea Buckthorn and as you noticed they smell wonderful. Heading towards autumn they produce stacks of wee orange berries that you can ferment.

@@SeanandEmilyem, most of the roads were built by English military to enable the army to suppress revolution. And export scotlands resources in the 1700’s; mostly young men for the empire armies and global colonialisation.

@@SeanandEmily Tricky to say the least, I rode many of the roads around the coast and sometimes my thoughts were 'What were they thinking when they laid these' One thing your footage doesn't show is the amount of effort it takes to negotiate them. So many blind summits and corners, turns around large boulders which had been there since the end of the ice age.

I don't know how I missed this one. Sean and Emily, I've seen some amazing filming of road journeys in the Scottish highlands but this is on another level. We could not have been more fortunate with the weather 😀 We arrived on the shores of Folkstone on the 1st of May and throughout this 8500km tour through Ireland and the UK i think we got rained on (like proper rain) once or twice during the whole trip and the rest of the time the sun was out.

I do like the Scottish Landscapes, vast expanses of rocky mountains is truly amazing. The Seaforth (white building with big glass panels that was behind you while you were eating your chips) in Ullapool did some really really nice food. We stayed in hostels when we did the NC500 last year, best one was Ratagan Youth Hostel, it was right on the edge of a Loch. Which was a welcome sight after a long day on the bike, my brother and I went for a swim and watched the sun set on the Loch. Wee Mad Road was a testing road, lots and lots of tight bends and twists.
Yeah they take some beating don’t they! Sounds a great place to stay and a well earned rest from a big day on the road. 😎👍🏻

Glad you watched the Lebanon Vlog, not many people have seen it as it was early on in the channel but it's one of our favorite trips (think it was 3 or 4 episodes in the end) the temple we visited was magnificent and the food was delicious.

I LOVE Gairloch, Poolewe, Ullapool and the hills/mountains of Assynt. I will be going back up there to Ullapool (and places around) in less than 6 weeks. Can't wait...

Another great episode.I write as it was 35 years ago I first arrived in Ullapool with perfect weather and with 2 pals on bikes after travelling from Aberdeen to John O Groats then west and south.Next day was the 1st time we did the empty Applecross Pass (no NC500 then, no internet etc) .Only map showing a twisty route.Our trip with story& photographs of the pass (remember them😅)was a 3/4 page article in BIKE MAGAZINE, Jan1990 issue .I do believe...the 1st ever bike magazine article of the now world famous pass !!

It will not surprise you that we rode round Europe in the 80's, I remember at the Belvedere Hotel on the Furka Pass , we walked 100 metres to see the gigantic Rhone Glacier ,where the river begins,we even could walk inside the Glacier in a tunnel walk for tourists!Long gone now.
Wow Switzerland in the 80's must have been amazing and something we would have loved to have seen. Yeah it's so sad that the glacier has retreated so much and that the Belvedere hotel has been long closed. You can still walk inside the glacier tunnel and they cover it over in the summer to try and protect it. A magnificent area for sure. Perhaps you have already seen this episode but here is the Furka pass from last year, of course it was a lot cooler when you saw it but still a wonderful ride 😎👍

So glad you got the Sunshine for Gairloch to Ullapool and north that's a great section to have the sun shine upon . Cal Mac run a Hopscotch ticket for touring the Hebrides . Knowing now it was May you were up you got it bang on this year , our may had good weather and getting the warmth with the whins and broom in flower does add that contrasting burst to the moorland and hillsides and the birch leafing up. If you had a traditional Minch westerly pushing ashore that entire coastline can be sea level grey cloud and rain so wet it would penetrate lead.
Yeah really glad teh sun was out for this stage of the trip and all the way to tongue! That's a good tipp for the ferry so thanks for that. Yeah May was a good choice!! -also for Ireland and England 😊 I dread to think if we had had that rain lol 😀

What makes Diabeg the best place in Scotland?
@@SeanandEmily debateable if its the best in Scotland but if you're riding through Torridon then some of the best views are up side roads, the best of which I would say is the road out to Diabeg which is itself spectacular. All of Wester Ross is pretty spectacular especially if the sun is out and its not midgy season.

Lovely Gairloch and Ullapool, gateway to the islands, don’t get drinking malt with the local fishermen, don’t ask me how I know😆🥃. You had lovely weather as I love the run up north of Ullapool (a lot of the peaks were once volcanoes), a very special part of the world. Note to self get back up there.
PS. The joy of you both appreciating your surroundings is very uplifting, never lose that feeling.

Another great one ! The ‘emigrants’ were forced from their homes in the most part - by the landowners who wanted to graze sheep on the land. It was part of what is known as the “Highland Clearances”. Around Gairloch, Plockton, Poolewe - you can see the effects of the Gulf Stream and the number of palm plants on the shores. Inverewe gardens also benefited where one person (forget his name) planted rhododendrons from around the world (different types). You should have tried the fish from that place on the front- It’s the best fish and chips I have had (continually). Your findings of hotel prices are scary - I’m not sure how a hotelier can look you in the eye, charging those sums. The gun emplacements were probably inshore batteries for the protection of the merchant ships which were marshalled there before setting out on Atlantic and Russian convoy duties in WW2.

Yeah we were shocked by the price of Hotels, should have brought the camping equipment. Some also made us feel like staying one night was an inconvenience for them 🤣. It's crazy how this trip cost the same if not more than our Heading North Series!

Grab the ferry from Ullapool, for Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis, 2.5 hrs, then travel another 30 mins, and you could be at our Croft! We're on the West Coast of the Isle of Lewis.. you'd love a few leisurely days going through the Outer Hebrides. Safe travels!

May is one of Scotland's busiest times. The weather is generally pretty good and the midges aren't out in force yet.
I've generally visited in or around May and always book well in advance. Even then, booking late the year before it can be difficult to get your favourite spots.
Really? We were there in the second week in May and didn't really see so many people or camper vans. But hotels availability wasn't great to maybe you are right and we just were in places with less people.
If you know were it is you're going to be be for sure booking ahead is a good idea ...probably can save a lot too.
@@SeanandEmily It is also possible that the madness of the whole NC500 thing has started to calm down now. I hope it has as it's actually put us off visiting for several years now.
Some of my favourite tales are of riding my bike in the Highlands before the NC500 came about and not having seen anyone for literally hours. It's like having all that wonder to yourself.
I then led a trip the year they started advertising the NC500 and again the people I took up there were amazed at how quiet it was.
We had such a great time that we did the same trip the following year and it was madness. It was just so incredibly busy.
And everything had started to go up in price as well! The pie shop in Lochinver for example had increased their prices by a huge percentage.
This said, there were some benefits. More fuel stations for example.
But yes, traditionally, those that know visit in May and June. And those that don't visit in July and August and get plagued by billions of wee, vicious bity things that seemingly come out armed with chains and baseball bats lol!
Yeah it's crazy how when a name is put on a route it becomes a 'thing'. Good for local economy (although I'm not sure how much those camper vans actually bring in as they are very self contained).
We try to do most of our tours super early in teh season or super late for this very reason -will happily take a bit of rain and cold over scores of people.
Don't wish to complain about prices but it wasn't unusual for hotels to be asking £200 a night plus the £50 for dinner a 4 week trip starts to get out of hand (or pocket should i say lol)

Weather wise, i have memories of many trips up North on two wheels where it was clear blue skys for days on end. It has been miserable for the past two summers tho, i'll give you that but what you got is not that unusual tbh.

@@SeanandEmily I commute by motorcycle and it was only when i thought about howl little i used my rain gear that i realised how little rain we got in the summer....up until a couple of summers ago.
Commuting by bike sure does make you aware of the weather, so nice not have to waterproof up each day before setting off to work.

At the start of this video. The emigration to Nova Scotia (New Scotland) wasn't a peaceful event in Scotland's history. It was basically a forced eviction and way of life of the Crofters. Look up the 'Highland Clearances'. It wasn't that long ago either. Between 1750 to 1860. You were at the Bridge/Tunnel in Glasgow at Central Station in a previous video. That is called the 'Hielanman's Umbrella', cos the 'Highland's Men' evicted from the highlands to Glasgow, would shelter from the rain under it.
Yeah a few have since mentioned this, that information plaque certainly had some missing information. Thanks for highlighting the full story. The name Hielanman's Umbrella was also mentioned but we didn't know that's where it originated from. Lots of history of Britain just isn't taught - remember being taught a lot about the romans though 🤣

We both picked up a cheap pair of glasses as there is no internal sun visor in our helmets and it was getting a bit hot with the lid down all day. Lol Emily is not the problem 4 items of her clothes is about the same as 1 of my T-shirts 😂 and lets not even mention my trainers 🤣

We bought the R1250GSA just before the R1300 was released, out 36,000km on it in the last year and a half. The bike has been great so didn’t feel the need to change it just yet. Hey guys, another great informative video, Scotland is on our Bike’it list, We have just got back from a months tour which consisted of Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, then back through France, I know you guys are based in Switzerland. This was the first time we have stayed there, And what an amazing week it was., We have passed through Switzerland many times on our way to Italy and Austria but never spent any time there. We thought Austria and Italy were beautiful countries but Switzerland played its trump card, we stayed in Stoos (that was an experience in itself, didn’t realise that you couldn’t take your bike to the top of Stoos) 🤪🤪🤪 how do you guys manage to get so much time away from work to do your travels?
Yeah Switzerland is indeed spectacular, a lot of people bypass it as they are scared of getting a speeding ticket lol -but there's so many fantastic routes in this relatively small country. haha is Stoos the one with the round pod like train that take you to the top? Must have been a great experience. 😎👍

Yes that’s the plan, we realised we didn’t have time to include the isles on this tour so stuck with the mainland with the thinking we will do an Isle tour in the future -they must be spectacular! Thanks for the tips 😎👍🏻

There’s a link in the pinned comment of each episode to the route, if you have the Calimoto full app you can download them too as a GPX . But probably use them as a guide to create your own route as you might choose to stay in different places 😎👍🏻

The heading West Series started May, so I guess the NC500 part was mid May (statically the driest month in the Uk). But we were incredibly fortunate with the weather. 👍🏻

I don’t know where everyone thinks it’s unheard of? We normally have fantastic sunny days. This year it has rained more which is not normal. Our burns dry up normally not this year.
If you have followed the journey from the start you will see It's more that we were into the 3rd week of our road trip through the UK and Ireland and had had sunny weather almost everyday of the trip 😊 Hope you enjoyed the views of your spectacular country.

Scotland looks like New Zealand when the sun comes out and Ullapool is where you get the ferry to Stornoway (Outer Hebridies). (takes 2 hours ) A nearby village is Tong,the birth place of Donald Trump's mother (Mary Anne Mcleod).

Sean the reason for the emigration to Canada May have had to do with the Highland Clearances where upon the Landlords evicted families from their homes and put sheep out to graze on the land.

Still I’ve been to Nova Scotia (the cabat trail I think) and it’s beautiful there although in those early days life must have been tough there too. Hotel was called the Millcroft -great hotel although the last available room was huge! 😎
The yellow flowers are Sea Buckthorn and as you noticed they smell wonderful. Heading towards autumn they produce stacks of wee orange berries that you can ferment.
I think it’s Gorse, it’s one of the first signs of Spring for us in Scotland.

Yes that’s right, the tour started May 1st and this would have been mid May. We were so fortunate with the weather throughout the trip! Sorry to hear the weather hasn’t been good since, thought you might have been in for a good summer. But then saying that here in Switzerland it did nothing but rain until last month.

The people didn`t have a choice about emigrating to Canada, it was the highland clearances, they were forced off the land, at gun point.

Garvault Hotel was the best hotel I stayed in the Highlands not stupid money
Not sure what you are talking about we never mentioned specific hotels. But we just checked it out, currently around £200 per night. Been told prices have shot up in the last couple of years 👍
