DARLING NELLY GRAY

- " 'Darling Nelly Gray' is a 19th century anti-slavery ballad written and composed by Benjamin Hanby in 1856. It is written as from the point of view of an African-American male slave in Kentucky whose sweetheart has been taken away by slave-owners. The man mourns his beloved, who has been sold South to Georgia (where the slave’s life was conventionally regarded as harsher). He eventually dies and joins her in heaven. The song became very popular in the years preceding the Civil War and helped promote support for the abolitionist cause.
Hanby composed the song while attending Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio in 1856 and was inspired by the Hanby family’s encounter with Joseph Selby, a runaway slave from Kentucky who died at the Hanby home in Rushville after relating the moving story of his escape to freedom and having to leave behind his lost love. Benjamin Hanby's father, Bishop William Hanby, a United Brethren minister who was active in the Underground Railroad, was attempting to raise money to free Selby's beloved when Selby died of pneumonia."

This song was a favorite of Bryant Henderson, a delightful southron gentleman from North Carolina, whom we met quite unexpectedly in July of 2013. We were in Gettysburg, playing for the public at the Lutheran Seminary as part of the 150th anniversary activities commemorating the Battle of Gettysburg. Bryant had noticed the special reenactor's discount we were advertising on Facebook in the weeks before the big events. He left an embarrassingly kind comment on our page, which prompted us to reach out to him. We discovered that he was a fellow musician who had a band of his own - The Huckleberry Brothers - so we invited him to join us and sit in with us at Gettysburg, if he was able. It was the beginning of a wonderful five-year-long relationship that would see Bryant become an honorary member of our band, often playing with us, entertaining the public and entertaining us in the process.
A number of different factors had led to our group, the 2nd South Carolina String Band, deciding to bring our 30-plus year musical 'adventure' to a conclusion in 2019. So, 2018 was the last year the six of us were together with Bryant, and the main event that year was the Gettysburg reenactment. We determined to try to make the most of the opportunity, and agreed to hire a video crew to record as many of our performances as we could afford. We all felt Bryant should be featured with one of his most favorite songs: "Darling Nelly Gray."
We in the band were deeply shocked and saddened to learn of his death in January of this year, 2023. We are proud to offer this video 'in memoriam' to our comrade, our fellow musician, our friend ~ our 'pard', Wiley Bryant Henderson. We will miss him. May he rest in peace. God bless and keep him. - Видеоклипы
It's 7 AM o'clock, end its raining, but it's a bright morning with your song. Thank you gentlemen.
God bless America!
❤️❤️❤️💕🇮🇹🌈🇺🇲💕❤️❤️❤️
Who cares what people think? This is history. They can ignore it, lable it or delete it from textbooks, but it ain't going away
I have a stray cat showing up 2 or 3 times a week for about 5 years now. She's left us 3 kittens, 1 at a time over this time period, she's our Nelly Gray.
I casually listen to these songs on a regular basis
thank you so much for your performance(s). Your band will probably be the last live vids of this century documenting and playing this particular era of usa historical songs/events...hang in there as we are entering perilous times in this republic's changes. Your farewell is noted and appreciated for WBH.....even so, Come Lord Jesus. amen
It's always so much fun to listen to you guys perform!
Very tragic to hear about Bryant's passing, may he rest peacefully.
I looked up his band, and their music has all of the aspects of your band's performances that make me enjoy it over others. Needless to say I think I will be adding some more videos to my music playlist!
It's so easy to label Civil-war ear, Confederate bands and even Union Bands as "racist" or "hateful" when in reality that is just not the truth. The Civil war had some great music that makes any patriot (to the C.S.A. Or the U.S.A.) smile and think about those who fought and died, even if what they believed was wrong, they died protecting their ideals. It's hard to think of much more American then that.
The populace is easily triggered and ignorant of history now. I bet you could write a piece on how pro slavery and white supremacist this song is and they’d believe it without even listening to it or reading lyrics. They have been conditioned to hate their heritage and ancestors so much. It’s sad.
@@michaelclark2458 so sadly true.
The music reflects the emotions of humanity. It makes no difference which side of the war soldiers served, their hearts were human, and tears or joy, anger or rue sing to us now and we understand it. They were our brethren.
How is it easy to label it "racist"? Ignorant comment.
@@0ak3nshi3ld88 not ignorant at all. There is language that is culturally offensive in music like this. If you sing songs like the original oh Susanna or Keemo Kimo you run the risk of being called a lot of names. I don’t agree with culture. I’m saying that it’s easy for the culture to just go right to the racist card rather than understand it’s deeper than just saying a word like digger or dark - key.
Gents, Yet another lovely and emotive song! Thank you for sharing. Sympathies for your recent loss. Regards, Bob
From Canada 🇨🇦 I share Southern morals, values, and commraderie.
Glad to hear it. From what I've been hearing about what's going on up there, you're going to need them... Just sayin'.
@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand Trudeau is a big problem and alot of people are sick of him im pretty sure he will be voted out. As for the woke garbage I dont put up with it just like in the US. Trudeau is Liberal like your Democrats. May God bless each and everyone of you your all an inspiration to a better time.
I certainly enjoy visiting Canada. I was on cruise in New Brunswick and the band played some authentic Southern music. I told them as a Southerners I approved. We enjoyed discussing the history of "Cajuns"
@@Dan-qd5gh I'll be preying for you from Kentucky. God bless you and your family.

God bless you all, gentlemen. You have done this nation a great service in its time of need.
YIKES ! High praise indeed. Thanks a lot ! Obviously our plan from the start.......... lol.
Love hearing these confederate songs, they sound very similar to our folk music here in Northern Ireland, you can definitely hear they kept in touch with their roots in this music.
Estimados senhores, eu não entendo inglês. Mas admiro a cultura de vocês. Esta melodia transmite muita profundidade e sentimento. Faz bem aos meus ouvidos. Gosto dessas canções.
Muita cara alegre para vocês.
Um abraço desde o sul do Brasil.
Muito obrigado !
Also love how there's constantly guns and cannons going off in the background haha
Yeah... Seemed like they almost always booked us a slot during the carnage.
I’m on the Eastern Shore of Virginia … one of these days I’d consider an overnight trip to see one of your shows……. You should publish a schedule of appearances.
They are retired.
HARD TIMES.
🇺🇸👊🤜🤛.
Well done boys! Miss you guys!
Beautiful song.
Beautiful! Thank you for keeping history alive.
Though I'm not American, I've always really enjoyed American Civil War-era tunes, and it's always this band which records the best performances! Great stuff, much love from Canada.
Even though this music was later on, past 1836… I will be going to the Goliad re-enactment on March 25th in Texas to honor my 5th great grandpa who died there. It’s always great to listen to your music when I road trip there
Nice
I always love this bands songs it was actually via them how I peaked my interest so much about the Civil War and the music that was written around that time hurrah hurrah for 2nd South Carolina hurrah

Bob Wills used "Nelly Gray" for "Faded Love' which is still a favorite esp. in Texas and Oklahoma.
Wow! This is is beautiful on so many Levels.... A song of Freedom!!!
Hi, Lads! Good to see another post but saddened to her about Bryant but such is the way for us all. The main thing is to be ready before the inevitable happens. Meanwhile, hope all are well and able to scratch out a tune or two and rally around the campfire once again. May the Lord richly bless yall and it'll warm up a bit before too long! God Bless Yall. From (Us'ns) here slightly across the line
Excellent!
I like your music very much. Can I forward some to my Chinese netizens? There are also many people who like the music of this period. It was you who made me fall in love with the music of this period, thank you to 2nd South Carolina String Band (sorry my English is not very good) - friends from China❤❤
Forward away ! Thanks very much for the kind words. By the way, your English is better than many Americans. Just sayin'.
Beautiful performance.
Congratulations on getting into Gods and Generals!
Very moving rendition. Condolences for loss of Mr. Henderson.
I am realy impressed with Mr Hendersons ability to remember all the words to the song. Great music.
My Fave Band past, present or whenever!!
Superb, well done gentleman.
Excellent folk song.🌺💝🌼♣️
Damn shame your all no longer together as a band. Only just come across you.
Fantastic job with this song- thanks so much for sharing it with us. I would love to hear you do "Billy Barlow"- I know it is a Union song but it is a great song and I know you would sound great doing it.
Yall should train a new generation to take yalls place. 🇺🇸🤠❌🙏👍🏻
Does anyone know anything about the banjo used in their songs? I want to find a banjo that can be used to play these songs but there isn't a lot of info readily available. I've found Carver Banjos but not sure if I should be looking at the Americana or the Minstrel banjo.
So, apparently you are planning on building your own. After a look at what he's offering, my choice would be the Minstrel. That said, do you already play banjo ? The minstrel kit is fretless. The 'Americana' appears to have frets, but they may be inlays (i.e., flush with the surface of the neck, but a different color wood). If you don't already know how to play the banjo, learning to play on a fretless could mean a much steeper learning curve. Both banjos are 'period' (if the Americana is truly an 1857 copy - I assume it is). I listened to both videos and my take was the minstrel had a better sound (there's LOTS more videos of the minstrel - so there's that -- obviously more folks chose that model). But then, each banjo was assembled by a different person... Just sayin'. Was me, I'd go 'MInstrel'. Opt for the beehive, if you do... I would. Anyway, I wish you best of luck. They are a lot of fun.
Thank you me and my girls love spendin time together whilst listening to these songs, only you guys can sing em the way they're meant to be sang. God bless all of you
Good use of whilst
Such a moving song. Makes me thankful for all the men who gave their life to put an end to the inhumane institution that is slavery in this great country of ours.
Well I am British and I like them- as an ex cavalry soldier l think General Lee was a fine old soldier.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Southern values and culture.
It’s nice old music almost Irish
yep and Scottish thats where most of the people who settled the south came from
