SOUTHERN SOLDIER & DIXIE'S LAND at Cedar Creek in 2016

- Over the years we've played for many barn dances and dress balls, often to hundreds and even thousands of soldiers and their ladies, not to mention Robert Duvall and the cast of Gods and Generals. But our favorite events have always been small, intimate evening concerts around the campfire that remind us of our origins as a group of infantrymen, entertaining our brother soldiers after a long, hard, hot day of (simulated) fighting with songs of the war, home and hearth, ladyfolk, strong drink, gambling, good fun, and life in the South.
But for many years our grand finale has been two powerful songs: Southern Soldier and Dixie. The uninitiated might be quite shocked at Southern Soldier's chorus of "KILL that Yankee soldier!". But that was after all the stated purpose of the more than one million Americans, who through the grace of God, were born south of the Mason-Dixon line, and therefore felt compelled to leave their homes and families to defend the security of their own free state and sister states - as alluded to in the Second Amendment - against what they saw as an armed invasion by a tyrannical collection of northern states determined to corrupt by force the country our founding fathers created (not to mention a heavily armed band of boys in blue likewise determined to "kill that REBEL soldier!”).
We feel the song, written shortly after the war, clearly relates the feelings, concerns and determination of the southern American soldiers we've tried to faithfully portray for 30 years.
“Dixie”, one of Abraham Lincoln's favorite songs, needs no introduction. Here are both songs, presented by us in the spirit of fun, nostalgia and education. As the sun slowly set over the many rows of tents covering the Virginia hillside, just as they did when Jubal Early launched the surprise attack that started the Battle of Cedar Creek, a brilliant full moon slowly rose over our heads, helping to illuminate the camp. At this time, we experienced one of the few instances in our many years in the hobby where we felt we could have actually been present in an original scene from the war - although not a setting of hatred, violence and carnage, but one of merriment, comradeship and devotion to our American homeland; universal themes all the world can relate to .

I remember that night. It was sorta pleasant night (as pleasant as Cedar Creek gets) and y’all put on an amazing performance. This brought back so many memories of that event and many others. It also brings back memories of good pards who I’ve known for years who don’t take the field anymore or have passed on. These two songs bring me so much joy. God bless!
Wow. What a wonderfully kind thing to say, John. It WAS a very fine night, that year. Playing around the campfire was where we began in 1989, and has ever remained as our absolute favorite concert venue. Glad you were there; glad Hawkeye had the presence of mind to hand his camera to someone who knew how to use it; and really glad we're able to share it with you and any other 'good pards' still out there ! Seems especially fitting on Remembrance Day 2023...

These are probably the 2 best songs by the south during the war of northern aggression.
Southern man through and through. Recently found out I'm kin to Lincolns Quartermaster and builder of Arlington cemetery Montgomery Meigs. His grandfather my 5th great grandfather is buried with him at Arlington.

My Dads family was all from Virginia and we had ancestors that fought in the Civil War. Our family were all Southern Sympathizer’s. My husband and I used to Re-enact and we just loved it. He would say that when you were out there on the battlefield it felt real. I wish we never stopped but the group we belonged to was very authentic, as we were but they started getting very strict and telling you when you could leave camp to visit the Sutlers and when you could and couldn’t do other things. They really started taking the fun out of it. I wanted us to keep doing it as civilians but my husband liked being a soldier in the Southern Army. So that never worked out. We miss it. We have seen your group play quite a few times, at Re-enactments and in Gettysburg. You are the very best. Thank you for bringing back many wonderful memories. You know what? The best time was after the public left and it was getting dark and the fires were started and a lot of women and men were making dinner. It was actually magical💫✨💫✨✨.
Do you have an online store? I wanted to see if there were other CD’s I didn’t have or if you had any DVD’s. I was there once at Cedar Creek. Is that the one held in October? I can’t remember if it was there or another place, but it was so cold that I was awake all night because I could not get warm. It was so frosty in the morning. We love you guys. This was a great video. ❤

It was a big, unforgivable mistake that Russian Tsar Alexander II did not help the South in the American Civil War, because today the entire West under the leadership of the Yankees is fighting against the Russian Federation, down to the last Ukrainian.

Sadly, no. Sorry to disappoint, but the only place you'll be able to see us 'in action' going forward, will be here on RUclips. The band DIS-banded at the end of 2019, due to aging-out mostly. Most of us started together in 1989, when we were already in our mid-40's. The 'annoyances' of aging, PC/Cancel Culture and in late 2019, the restrictions of Covid all combined in a sort of perfect storm that made it clear the time had come for us to 'drop the mic’ and leave the stage...
It is said, ‘All good things’… etc., etc’. And so they have. It was a GREAT ride while it lasted, thanks to good folks like yourself. Thanks for asking though. I wish we could have had better news for you.

I think the reason the south lost the war is because instead of coming up with battle tactics they were too busy writing bangers like these two songs!
