- Southern Soldier ~ Attributed to Ms. Minta Morgan - 1937
Produced in the Appalachian hills of the Carolinas in the latter part of the war and kept alive by oral tradition into the 21st century, this version was derived from the lyrics recalled by traditional singer, Miss Minta Morgan, and collected in the 1930's by famed American Folklorist, Alan Lomax. It is probably the most articulate statement of why most Southern soldiers fought the war - as one Johnnie replied when asked, "Why?" by his captors, "'Cause you'uns are here!" Practically all of the expressions of Southern patriotism found in the verses of this song appear nearly verbatim in letters, journals, and diaries written by soldiers during the conflict.
Here, in September of 1991, we have been singing this song for a year or so, and already it was a big hit with the troops in camp whenever we performed it. Our first audiocassette had just been released a month earlier, but we were already being asked, "When's your next tape coming out?" In fact, one of our own 'pards' suggested that when it did, it should only contain one song - repeated 12 or 15 times - "Southern Soldier"!
We first heard the song played by Bobby Horton (www.amazon.com...) on a borrowed "Homespun Songs of the C.S.A" audiocassette while driving home from a reenactment in 1990. It was one of those 'electrifying' moments in life and I remember saying, "We HAVE to do that song!" For 28 years, 'Southern Soldier' has been, along with 'Dixie's Land', our signature closing combination.
And remember folks, this is all grown-up 'make-believe'. We ain't really hating anyone or killing anyone - blue or gray.
I just realized you guys have been performing for a pretty long time now! Even when you guys are retired I hope you keep this channel up so we can still listen to these amazing tunes!
You can count on it Trad... We brought a 'film' crew with us to the 155th Gettysburg reenactment to capture more on-site music. We did 2 concerts - one a 'candlelight' show, nearly 2 hrs. long, a dance (with our usual 'Grand Finale' - which this year surpassed the 150th in enthusiasm!), and numerous performances on Sutler Row. I will be editing and releasing them well into the future. So, stay tuned. AND - thanks, btw, for the kind words!

Oh, how wish I could have attended the 155th! Hopefully I'll catch you sometime next year during my 3week CW pilgrimage in the States... All the best from Athens, Greece (this is Steph, Joe!)
I tell you what, Steph, try to keep in touch from time to time (here, FB, or thru our website www.civilwarband.com) and perhaps we can link up at some point in your travels.
Thank you, I will. That 'd be really awesome. Cheers!

I listen to many renditions of Confederate songs and the civil war band has very quickly became my favorite they have the ability to actually make it sound like you are in camp on the eve of a civil war battle!

Being Southern is a state of mind and heart. Which is why a lot of people (read, "Yankees") don't understand us.

I look forward to be in the company of proud Americans like this. Currently in southern NJ it’s tough to find any.
Seek out a campaign-style Civil War reenactment unit - blue or gray. You'll find truly lots of excellent people, all proud of their history and heritage.
This is an amazing song, good job guys! My favorite band does it again!
I love God, my dog, the South, and your music. You're in good company. 😉
Now, that truly IS good company !!! Thanks for that !
Gotta be my favorite performance of this song. It makes you feel like you’re there in the camp way back when.
Thanks a lot, Justin. It really felt that way to us back then. One of our mates said we should make a cassette (that's all we had then) with just "Southern Soldier" - over and over. He said that way, he wouldn't have to keep rewinding it.
I remember hearing this on The Battlefield a time or two. Johnny Reb seemed to take great joy in this particular song.
You guys are such a great band
Thanks !
I'm Scottish. And I love this.
It really has a Scot/Irish sound to it in a way.

Long live the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Born in misses Missouri moved to Florida at 6 months getting great education
The South fought for their homes and family. The North fought to take the southern assets.
Both true, but as usual, it's way more complicated than that... Just sayin'.
Huzzah my boys!! SING IT!!
I’m a young kid from Canada but I respect and believe in what the south was fighting for, there are so many misconceptions and ignorant people out there, most young people don’t take time to really learn about the southern cause, young people also believe all the lies that are spewed at them, can’t fool me.
Thanks, Jsks ! Unfortunately, young folks in high school aren't being taught that, at the very least, there were other causes for the conflict - not just the 'big' one, slavery.
My great grandfather was a major for the Confederacy. I always believed what they taught in school until I did my own research. Now a 29 year old Proud Southern Son of the Confederacy.
I have noticed that the music of the Southern States is very similar to Irish and Scottish music.
From the tunes to the instruments that were being played. I suppose that it is because of the high migration from the Scottish Highlands and Ulster and the rest of Ireland, and possibly the North of England also.
Yep.
God bless the United States 🇺🇸
❤️😭
And god bless the whole world
❤️
South America salute the Confederate Flag.
anyone who says that south fought fought to preserve slavery is just arrogant. Even in these songs you never hear a word about slavery in confederate song. What you do hear is about fighting to protect their homeland and families.
My long distance travelling music in RDR 2.
I had 3 Grandfather's who fought for the South, they didn't fight to preserve slavery, they fought for the same reasons we fought for during The Revolutionary War. The victors of a war write the history of that war.
@Tosterchild Maybe they themselves didnt fight because they liked slavery. (Most propably did.) But they fought for a state, that was based on slavery and created to preserve it. They didnt have to wanted to fight for slavery, but still they fought for the confedaracy wich Was created because of slavery, what means they fought for slavery even if they didnt want. Same with Nazi Germany. Many Soldiers propably fought because of they were a Patriot and wanted to defend their country (like many soldiers of the confedaracy too did.) Still they defended a Regime wich Was killing Millions of people for no reason.
@Kian slaves were something only rich people had. most people fought because rich people who made up the leadership told them to for whatever reason and they believed it. just like nowadays, rich people who sell drugs tell you to wear a mask or youll die and so many people believe it and wear their mask and are willing to argue and fight for it. NOT BECAUSE they know anyone who got sick from corona, but because the rich people who sell the drugs told them to....
@Kian I am a firm believer of being proud of the south and accepting the confederate’s hateful views as wrong. But the north under the radical Republicans treated the south like trash after President Johnson
Most confederates were racist, it’s a sad fact, but they still fought for home, and I’m still a proud southerner. If the south seceded today id join it. In the words of an ex confederate: ‘A good soldier fights for his country no matter the merits of what it gains through victory’ (paraphrasing)
@@roaringtime9140 the average joe didn't own any slaves, rich people did. It's the same then as it is today. Rich people start bullshit, and poor people go die. It's similar to fighting the middle east over "terrorism". The truth is that we're fighting for control of oil and for world domination but the rich people in charge feed a line of bullshit, and the poor go die. The average joe from the south in 1750 was just trying to hunt and farm enough to feed his family. Rich people were getting rich on free labor and cotton.
Amen. Where do I enlist?

Well, if we're still allowed to do it (woke-lefty progressive liberals hate everything Confederate), your best bet would be Virginia, the Carolinas (South Carolina in particular), Georgia, and Alabama. Do your research by looking for authentic reenactor organizations like the Liberty Rifles, and see what they're planning and where. Good luck !
