I worked with a man some years ago that had a similar vacation issue, company changed it to use or lose. Thing is, he had nearly six months of vacation saved up. And they refused an exception. So he had six months saved with only seven to use it. Fortunately for him, they could not under state law refuse to let him use it up. So he took six months off. Killed his divisions productivity, and her then retired shortly thereafter. They were a horrible employer.
The bar story, yet another in a long string of decisions where short-term gain is prioritized over long-term business. Always nice to see their policies backfire and shut them down as a result.
That last story was touching and how ignorance was the basis for his misunderstanding. In the end, the educator acknowledged his mistake and corrected himself. Many people lack the capacity for apologizing for their own behavior and act like YOU are the one who is supposed to apologize.
I still would have held some resentment. Came across as uncaring? You WERE uncaring. Students aren't machines that push out dozens of assignments every hour. But it is good that he had the balls to apologize.
That last story; sounds like meds and counselling aren't working very well. Hit January and everything refreshes...obviously things aren't working. Must be a better way to help people who've had so much trauma...
we are not a piece of play dough that you can shape shift, we are wounded beyond repair and have to deal with our self's every single day for the rest of our life (sometimes disgusted with our very existence because in our skin we can feel the improper touch and abuse that happened )

@@carolinem.5044 I agree. Just going by what OP mentioned. There's no magic bullet. It's just that I've seen so many people say things like "been going to counselling for years" and very little changes for them. Something in their regime needs fine tuning, or a different approach may help. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity lol.
Talk about crazy business policies! I once called a groomer to get an appointment for my dog at 11 am the following day and was told by the receptionist that she’s decided to start the appointments at 9 am and that’s the one I have to book! I said I can’t be there at 9, I can be there at 11. Nope, she wanted to book me for 9 because that’s how she decided it was going to work, with the next available at 10, then 11, and so forth. The reason was so she and the groomers could get all the work done in the morning and then leave early, lol. I told her you’re going to lose business over this ridiculous moronic policy and later she came to her senses and stopped doing that. What an idiot.
The last one: what an amazing OP. What a survivor. Yes, I have read that peope get very ill on the anniversary of something bad happening to them. The amount of detail that OP provided that "power gone to his head" history professor was what he deserved to have to read because he asked for it. I hope this taught him a lesson to treat his other students with health issues better too. Broken hearts for OP: 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
The bar story is why people don't like to frequent bars much and why new bars go out of business before their fifth year. When you screw over paying customers because you want to be greedy, they don't come back. Especially when you're going to be the cause of a lot of violations. The second story, I so fucking feel the OP. I'm dealing with the Dean of my department and every time I have him for class, I either fail or barely pass his class. You would think that they would notice the issue. But, no, I would get him for a class.
HR in the first story is unbelievable. I will freely admit that I consider limiting vacation rollover somewhat tightly a legiitmate business decision - avoiding possibly huge deferred costs, and not letting employees work themselves to death, basically (well, ok, they can still do it at their own expense if they so wish). But no rollover at all is a) too extreme (3-6 months seems more reasonable), and b) there must be a transition period when such a policy is introduced, in order to allow people to plan accordingly, and to avoid disrupting any project in the near term. At the very least allow reasonable exceptions when project schedule is in danger. The story makes it very obvious what bad things can happen if too strict of a policy is implemented.
That last one just makes me sit there and stare. I can not see this person holding a job. Followed by, life is going to really be terrible unless they somehow start to cope with everything.
@Nogilthazaa A lot of people go through horrendous situations but learn how to not use it as a crutch. She is using hers as a crutch instead of really dealing with her problem. I stopped listening because all I heard is treat me special because I refuse to actually deal with my traumatic problem, because if I do how else will I get attention and sympathy.
Ms Temptation you are 100% correct . I am a SC 80% Female Veteran who was raped in the military as well as other traumas from my youth but I will not let those shitbags dictate my life nor will I use it as a crutch and this last story she is most definitely! Trauma by others done to someone you can either let them keep traumatizing you or you can take control!
Glad you brought this up, I had the same thought. Regardless of whether she is doing all she can to help herself the question is how will she cope in a work environment once she finishes school if he condition doesnt drastically improve. Social Security Disability, assuming she is in the US, will be a pittance with little to no earnings history.
@Zak Strayder Are you serious... She was raped and abused... How can you say that... Im losing respect in humanity with every passing day... I won't answer if you try to be a petty asshole in the reply to this so don't bother... Absolutely disgusting... You wouldn't think this if you were her so shut up...
If your mental health is so bad that you can't get us assignment in on time what makes you think that an employer would want you in their business! Sounds like a made-up excuse that you learned to use and people just let you get away with
As an Aussie who worked as a bartender when I was a teen due to at the time, you could get an RSA before you where 18, I even got in through my high school, not sure if the laws have changed now then what it was 10 years ago, but that bartending story made me chuckle, good on the woman for putting the manager in their place. Also to the person with DID, I hope you and your system are doing better.
the bar story. I mean I have seen some places where they have like Min of $10 for cards but its not fully enforced, I know for some of the bars i seen them at. they are the higher end type bars. drinks are pricey. except for like Sodas and Coffees which would be like 75 cents small glass/cup to $2.50 for large. think they just dont want someone getting the cheapest item there and using a card to pay for it.
Chakat Nightsparkle Lot of small shops have a minimum spend here - the charges per transaction they have to pay would wipe out the profit on single items and they cannot up their price to cover it without losing custom.
I'm not the most sensitive person not the most empathetic(in fact I'm pretty distance from my fellings) but a little warning for people who suffer from abuse would be okay I think in this case.
I hate to say it, but I can fully understand the 20 dollar minimum thing. As a small business worker I'll tell you debit companies are utterly merciless to non-corporate. Our current debit company only costs something like 32 cents for every 100 dollars, but the one before that? 2 bucks for every unit of 20 dollars, plus service fees, plus needing to buy their in house device that cost 250 bucks, seemed to break down every other month, and would only be replaced, not repaired by their company if it wasn't working for any reason. That was, at the time, the better deal. Eventually when the thing broke, we just did not replace it, because the lost business was, in all honestly, less a loss then the fees. Of course our current set up is better- Thank any gods listening for the Square. -But the point is thus, debit fees cost massively more for small buisness. Or at least they used to. Now it's only like twice to three times as much, which is far less. How much less? Well that same original company, the ridiculous one that was the better option? Would have cost 13 cents a sale for a large chain like McDonalds. 13 cents vs 2 dollars. I don't think they even ever worked for McDonalds, and quite frankly felt a ridiculous level of satisfaction when I heard the company was bought out by someone else and no longer exists in this world.
There are laws in place to protect against having to give your full medical/psychological history in that kind of situation. He could have gotten the school into serious hot water for demanding details the way he did. Not only would there be a major financial loss if OP sued, but they would likely incur heavy fines. No way would the school not fire someone who caused that.
sounds like the person in the last story realised that he could potentialy be banned from hosting any type of lecturs or teaching ever aigen for that (i would think it could potentialy bee what happend there considerin how out of bounds he went)
Damn, the person in the last strong was amazing. Further education with a mental illness can be extremely difficult. They are very brave and strong willed.
The last story I did something not too similar. It was coming up to the anniversary of my bff, she died of an overdose. I felt I wouldn't be able to concentrate at work. I explained to my boss in private why I needed the time off while breaking down. She gave me a few minutes to gather myself. She was fine. But some of the ladies I worked with (it was all women I worked with) weren't happy because it would be busier than usual and that I shouldn't have those days off and for days after I got it bad with horrible comments from them. Eventually after about 2 days of their constant bickering and bitching at me I snapped at them and told them why I was getting thie to e off again breaking down. They were ashamed at how they acted. Also I never really took holidays and would always make myself available. But after that episode I decided I would always take my allocated holiday time and i would never cover for them again if they needed days off. Not long after I left and got a new job. It hadn't been the first time of their bickering and hitching Ben in peoples backs. People shouldn't need to explain themselves and why they want time off.
Never apologize or explain. It's not like they are the jury coming to a decision on your fate, right? No one needs to know, except possibly HR, and even then, they're not the best people to keep private matters confidential, in my experience...Be dignified. Look them in the eye and say stuff like "I don't ask why your husband cheats on you, so don't ask about my personal business". They'll be too busy checking his phone records to bother with you again. ;-)

Not a horrible employee... Horrible company and HR... That company ABSOLUTELY deserved it and I hope everyone from his team left too...

Getting better is a process and not a checklist that can be ticked off. Long term abuse will take a long time to heal.
