    When China's industry lags behind western developed countries, the west attributed the reason to China's system. When China's industry vaguely surpassed the West, the West no longer questioned its own system.

      @@tocu9808 : The West was definitely naive and blinded by what neoliberals/neocons viewed as their ideological success - that as China becomes globalized and wealthier, they would become democratized and liberalized like "us," the End of History as Fukuyama once famously said. For much of the 15 years since China's accession to WTO, the US made a colossal mistake of believing that helping China grow and richer would better the world. Business in turn do what they do to make profit -- that's their sole purpose and nothing else.

      I wish logical, caring, knowledgeable people who surround themselves with like minded individuals were in power running more governments.
      Governments do not seem to be run for the benefit of businesses, people, or the communities best interest. Morals and Values have almost disappeared. I will still pray, hope, and dream of a better world.

    Not only EV , E-bikes, solar,wind power. They are already in 6G , commercial airplanes, high speed trains , space , face recognition , AI, non cash economy , food deliveries, logistics , super infrastructure , personal safety….. etc.

      I totally agree that China people are doing great in all those areas. One thing is bothering though: communist party dictatorship and a desire to start wars with neighbours. Increased military spending is also not particularly encouraging factor for the future.

Historically, 3000 yrs of Han rule, they have never had a war with a non-bordering country. What would you do if you were in their shoes?

    What a lot of people overlook is that China's drive to become a major developer of EVs was due to the big problem they were having with air pollution in their major cities. This now means that they are far ahead of countries like Japan which has been slow to adapt to battery powered EV's believing that alternatives like hydrogen fueled vehicles would become the new technology

    4 years ago I was in Euro, now I am in China. There are complaints that EVs are not popular because there are few charging stations and electricity is expensive. But why are electric piles everywhere in China, and EVs can travel 400KM for only 3.5 euros (28 RMB) at home? (By the way, more than half of the EVs in China have home charging box). So these problems are Euro's problems, not EV's problems.

      EU goal is to reduce the cars on roads, and is continuosly transforming car roads in cycling and pedestrian roads with improved public transportation..
      Both China and EU have different approach to the issue.

      Right, I owned a BYD SUV and I have installed a home charger by BYD team. It's a little slower but we sleep for at least 6 hours and that's far enough for my SUV to be fully charged.
      I normally travel less than 50 km daily.

    For many people price is the most important factor in choosing a vehicle in this days of inflation and high cost of gas. An affordable EV is what we need regardless who make it for daily commute of less than 100 miles. I saw in China they can get an EV for less then $5000 USD. When will VW start making “People’s Car” again instead of luxury SUV?

    The fall of Western dominance.. Here in Manila we prefer Chinese made cars very cheap and affordable. And money wise, China made cars are also most advance as compared to Western made.. Congrats China.

      I just don't think the technology or infrastructure is there yet. When I go on a road trip I'll go at least 300 miles before I take a bathroom break and will drive for up to 19 hours in a day. It only takes a few minutes to refill my gas tank yet to recharge a car takes at least half an hour if you are lucky.
      Don't get me wrong, I'd love an EV but am just not confident in them yet and we do need to produce more power and again solar and wind power are not that reliable.
      Now Japan is working on water turbines to set in the ocean in the strong currents to produce power and that does sound promising and reliable

    I feel a bit of satisfaction from this, since the supporters of European automotive industries were doing everything they could over the last decade to stop or slow the transition to EVs, they are still fighting it. I don't want to see even more of our industry move to China, but I can't wait to see to look in their faces when they realize that by opposing EVs they made the industry they were trying to protect obsolete, instead of allowing it to evolve and adapt.

      Even worse, china are implementing very tight emissions rules for vehicles that many foreign manufactures can't pass. A lot of european and japanese cars won't be able to be sold there. Which is a huge market.

    It should be noted that the Chinese EVs sold in Europe are usually 40% more expensive(EU tariff for car is 10%) than they are sold in China and they are still considered cheap and competitive in price (for example MG). So probably the problem is why cars in Europe are so expensive,
    Volkswagen sells their cars much cheaper in China than in its home country Germany, China maybe now is the place with lowest car price in the world.

      Are you delusional? I don’t know where you are in Europe but here in Denmark these cars are very expensive, inefficient and the tech is plain bad. It makes no sense buying them, except for design taste. These “analysts” are looking into gross sales, and that is only an advantage because China is the largest car market in the world. Batteries are produced both in the USA and China, but soon other places. Chinese manufacturers are doing much better than expected because no one believes in them to begin with.

    The world should not underestimated China, not just cars, but everything made in China now are totally different from what we have seen 20 years ago, while they can still maintain very low prices, the quality is improving substantially, everything are in world standard now, some are ahead of the world such as infrastructures, AI, solar technology…

    The blade battery of BYD in China is the most advanced battery in the world, and many countries' buses are BYD with high cost-effectiveness. Currently, BYD is the world's best-selling electric vehicle, and Tesla also uses BYD battery technology. Currently, the proportion of electric vehicles in China is increasing, which is basically half of that of gasoline vehicles. Europe talks about environmental protection all day, but there is no implementation. Electric vehicles are far behind China and the United States. When China's electric penetration rate reaches 90%, I don't think Europe will have any chance of winning this competition, not only because politicians are short-sighted, but also because a large number of voters who don't understand anything are constantly manipulated and deceived by the media

    It would be a mistake to think that the Chinese can only copy products. Like the Japanese and Koreans before them, they only copy until they have enough experience and know-how to be able to produce better products than the companies they copied from. Once upon a time both Japanese and Korean cars were considered to be "cheap knockoffs", but given time, they were able to produce vehicles that stand with the best of those made in Western countries.
    In fact in terms of battery technology the Chinese are already years ahead of any batteries made by competitors. Largely thanks to a short-sighted patent that gave the Chinese free rein to use LFP technology while restricting all other competitors, and thus giving them many years of headstart in that technology. But to their credit they made the best of the headstart they were given and are now undisputedly producing the longest lasting and safest batteries in the world.
    This was why Tesla switched all their shorter ranged vehicles and home batteries to using LFP batteries, because after starting to use them in their Chinese Gigafactory, they realised that LFP batteries were without doubt the best batteries for their vehicles where range was not as important, and rapidly brought them over to use in other Gigafactories.
    The Chinese government also put Chinese EV makers through a "survival of the fittest" hyper competitive environment, and the ones that are now expanding out of China (BYD, MG (SAIC), Polestar (Geely), Xpeng and Nio to name a few) are the ones who have survived and thrived. There were hundreds of EV manufacturers that went bankrupt during this process and as usual no one knows the losers.

      If they’re not solving their spicy batteries issue they can try and try and try. I think a lot of people are ready for good quality Chinese products but I’m afraid just a few daring designs and tech gimmicks are not enough. Too many batteries are going on fire in China and of course the CCP is trying to cover it up and save face as per usual. Knowing how temperature and mechanical shocks can damage batteries and increase chances of fires, knowing the weather and road quality of where I love I’d be reluctant to get any electric car, never mind a Chinese one.

    Chinese EV car companies are already about 10 years ahead of traditional car manufacturers. I know of 3 EVs from China I would love to have here in the States.

      Some daring designs ad gimmicky tech is not enough. They can afford fast tracked development and production in order to aggressively compete in a well established automotive industry, but currently quite a few of their electric cars are going on fire. I think a lot of people are waiting for amazing quality Chinese products but I think they’re just not ready yet. And then of course you have plenty of people easily seduced by anything shiny that comes from China.

    Of course Europeans will buy Chinese products. The majority of products sold in Europe are made in China anyway. I think people forget that the majority of what they buy in European stores is chinese made. The same will be true for cars. Europeans have to drop the idea that they make superior products, because they don't any more.

      Japan is always a copycat of China for millenia. Japanese culture is Chinese Tang Dynasty culture replica. Google search for “Japanese missions to imperial China” and “Japanese missions to Tang Dynasty”. Their culture and writing system came from China. Germany innovated the first car and invented mechanics. Japanese cars, American cars and Korean cars are all copycat brands.

Evs are a new field that people are learning on the go the chinese have just done better. About technology byd is a leader in battery technology, thats arguably one of the most important technologies in evs.the western leader in ev is actually using byd batteries

    It isn't so much the car industry but the greater industrial growth in the machine tools and tool making, both punch press and mold making/die casting dies. And it all begins with the steel industry that is the world's largest. They are extremely hard working and driven. But it's still hard to believe that this all happened within the last 30 to40 years.

    In the past 20 years, Europe has not kept pace with the United States and East Asian countries. New technologies are always emerging in the United States and East Asia. Europe has stopped developing both technologically and economically. Europe is becoming less and less important.

    This discussion is suggesting that Chinese auto companies are getting ready to take over the market for EVs in Europe and the US. Seems like people are forgetting that automobiles are subject to more import controls than other product by every country. Tesla built a market in Europe with expensive vehicles and only then began building cars in Germany now that the market has been established.

      @@cinpeace353 Chinese EVs are allowed in the US market so long as they follow the laws and safety regulations like everyone else. The biggest issue is that there's still an import tariff of something like 25-30%, but some Chinese brands are either buying into existing US/Euro brands or planning to build local manufacturing/assembly.

    As someone who used to work for an electronics corporation and with Chinese OEMs in developing new products, none of this is surprising.
    Europeans have collectively been underestimating the Chinese forever. If we don't start playing a global game and take our competition seriously we'll lose out.

    I don’t normally watch DW for their west-biased approach and use of US narratives..the consultant from CapGemini was being polite and tried to explain the facts and yet the DW journo is still trying to use his understanding of 20th century China 😂. I feel sorry for most of the comments put in this channel, as it seems most still understand China based on their 20th century, I don’t blame them as it’s unprecedented in human history a country can changed so dramatically in 20-30 years where it took European and US century to have this happened. I think Chinese will love that attitude it will mean most of these still do not understand what’s coming in terms of competition. Read the other day, how BYD was brave enough to go for the Japanese auto market, and it seems they are picking up a good initial sales in the first few months.

    China didn't steal the market, it's just their government systems have less debate and therefore moving policy is a lot faster than in the West. This is good, some countries need to be the pilot of the electric car so others can follow / case-study n and lowered the price of global e-car so it is more affordable.

      It depends on city planning. If public transit is convenient and affordable, some people may prefer public transit. I have a car. However, when I need to go downtown for conferences, I prefer park and ride if the conference is close to a subway/SkyTrain station.

    One persepctive missed out is the level of competition among the companies and also the Chinese working people are so intense that they spear ahead technology advancement and quality improvement. The young gen chinese are also highly educated, competing among peers making them pushing bounderies of their products that is now seems threat to the Germans. Many see China 996 imbalance life but also due to long hours, they work relentlessly more than anyone in the world. China overtaking Germany brands EV is now their result.

    I'm disappointed they didn't address how the trade war between China and America could will effect EV production. Say if in retaliation for the Micron ban, America restricts NVIDIA from exporting advanced chips to China, that would cripple the driver assist in Chinese EVs. Chinese companies have stated plans to develop domestic production but that kind of research/development is a multi-year process.

The problem for EVs is the huge variety of chips (not just control systems) from silicon carbide (SiC) substrates and wafers, SiC power semiconductors, AC/DC and DC/DC converter chips, high-power inverters, etc... China can eventually supply that domestically, but they don't currently have enough foundries to meet the need. I was hoping Peter Fintl would give an estimate on how many years it will be before new facilities come online. He used to be the head semiconductor analyst at Capgemini so I expected him to discuss that issue.

    The Chinese pivot to EV around 15 years ago, long before Elon Musk even thought of establishing Tesla. So it isn't an instant thing, but the result of long term vision, hard work and huge investment in R&D. The Chinese gov under Hu Jintao recruited ex Audi executive to be their minister in charge of building Chinese auto industry, to compete with the legacy Auto. He immediately steered the Chinese auto industry towards EV because he understood that it was useless to try to catch up with legacy auto in ICE. Now the Chinese are reaping the rewards.

    China has less govt regulation, however I have seen a report only a year ago that showed the batteries do not last as long and they have less milage. Personally I dont see that ev vehicles are cracked up to be as environmentally friendly as claimed with the rare earths needed and the batteries dont last that long and they create 70% more green house emissions to make than a combustion car. There are huge developments in synthetic fuels, hydrogen and other battery types which are much cleaner than whats currently flavor of the month.

    I live in Mexico. My son has three buddies who either bought or the family bought one of the Chinese cars, two electric and one gas. All three spend more than three months back at the agencies for months...the warranty is wasting away in the shop because they don't work well. The quality is not good.

    This is what I think is going to happen: In the 70'-80's in the US, automakers got spoiled by having a captive audience, American consumers and the quality of the cars dropped off, so Japan jumped in with Datsun, Toyota, Honda and US automakers had to play catch up to stay in business. Now I think the Chinese EV's will be in the US on a huge scale because they make a competitive auto at a lower price.

    You must remember that when you are inside a Mercedes-Benz the luxury interior will be very comfortable as you sit there waiting for the fuel station to get gasoline delivered... Although after a week or two of waiting you might want to get out and see if you can find a battery-operated car to take you home.

    It’s interesting to hear about the general idea of made in china stuff is bad quality. The system lacks regulations on many products thus leads to bad quality products flooding the market. When the system has regulations that promotes quality like prioritizing safety concerns, the factories are definitely capable of producing such products like automobiles. Just like how many big brands like Apple, tesla, Honda, Dell, HP, Volkswagen (just name a few brands) all have Chinese manufacturers in the past decade or so.

      This perception of quality is strange for the reasons you pointed out. I think the leading analogy is when Japanese cars came to the west, but China is not Japan. The only problem with Chinese cars is that we have different expectations, it’s cultural and design. Chinese makers have overcome most of those barriers. They are coming.

      Really funny because serpentza released a video just a month ago talking about how Chinese EVs have a really nasty habit of randomly breaking, catching fire, or even exploding, with alarming regularity. He even supported it with reams of footage, all uploaded by Chinese users and bystanders to these events.

    This is the difference between having one political entity putting an impressive amount of public funds into R&D in multiple fields that can produce tech that it's industries can then utilize versus other political entities cutting governent spending in education and public research with the sole exception of weapons R&D.
    Ironically, that's why the US beat the USSR's economy and now we're the ones repeating that mistake because we're asked to reduce spending so we can make billionaires even richer billionaires with ever more tax cuts so they can have a few extra mansions and yahts that would have no impact intheir quality of life and their wealth will only serve to increase the wealth gap that threatens our democracy.
    Either we roll up our sleeves, tax the rich and fund technological "moonshots" in aerospace, energy, cyberentics, genetic engineering, nanotech and medical nanotech, quantum computing, material technology and nuclear physics or we better start learning chinese so we can understand the instruction manuals for the tech we will have no option but buy from them because they'll be decades ahead of us.

    Germany is drawing the lesions from Japan and South Korea. Both Japan and South Korea were lackluster in teaming up with Chinese in chips and smart phone development. And they insisted to work alone and develop their own Chinese market. They were in fear that Chinese will "steal" their technologies. But the reality is that, one way or the other, Chinese will acquire the technologies. It might take three or five years longer but the end is expected. Once they get the technology, if you are their partners, they will simply push you out of their market. It is quite simple logic: technology for market, you get want you desire and I get what I desire. If you don't give up the technology, we will still let you stay until the moment you no longer have the technology advantage.
    Germany is taking a new route. They will START WITH technology sharing because they know that China has developed to such an advanced stage that they could get the technology quickly, one way or the other. So they use technology as the investment, and protects it with geopolitics (EU slightly learning toward China) and HOPE that China won't take their technology and kick them out. So far this Foreign Affiliate Asset investment model is working. They are part of the "investment club" led by China and protected by EU geopolitical maneuvers.
    From China's perspective, if you want market and want investment return, you can not KEEP your technologies and design talents. You must share and we will give you profits. Stop the BS about Intellectual Properties Stealing. It is just IP in exchange for market. If you have a problem, get out. If you like the idea, stay in. One way or the other, China will dominate.

      My son, went to China 5 years ago after graduating from UCSD. Recently bought a BYD made hybrid car. When fully charged and filled up, it can travel 1200 km. Goes 200 km on electric alone. 0 to 100km 3.9s, for the price of 25k usd. He’s very happy with it. Meanwhile, I am in California driving a Lexus GX460, ($65k + 9.25% tax) getting 15 miles per gallon on average with premium fuel.
      What do you conclude?

      @@AP-ei4jt It's proven that working longer than 8 hours is extremely inefficient, since productivity drops severely and workers tend to have burnout. There are even companies where you only have to work 4 hours in Germany and their productivity is way higher than in China, because employees are extremely happy. With sacrifice comes early death during retirement. If you really think that the US/Europe would become irrelevant than your ideology makes you blind. Nobody, not even China thinks that this will happen. We are talking about a multipolar world but the US will always be a superpower just because of it's size. Tensions only really started when Trump was in office and once Xi started playing the communist card again, transitioning all of your industrie to new partners takes a while. But I found your attack on my psychological health quite amusing, makes me feel civilized.

      the charging infrastructure isn't there, n won't be for a very long time.
      not enough charging stations, and / or electricity to be able to handle
      millions of charging EVs, and electricity would become too expensive.

    Instead of huge SUVs and luxury limos, German automobile producers should make something like the original Volkswagen Käfer/Beetle again, a small, compact, robust car which looks cute, built to last and easy to repair, only this time with electric motors instead of a combustion engine. Four direct drive motors built directly into the wheel hubs, a battery pack in the back where the engine in the original VW used to be, and other than that very few mechanical moving parts, just robust, simple electronics, nothing too fancy and overpowered. Make it cheap, simple, indestructible. Give it just enough power to reach 130 km/h if needed, make it as lightweight as possible, with just enough space for five people, it's OK if getting in and out is a little cumbersome. Put the trunk in front, just like in the original VW. Maybe add separate bumpers again so that if you accidentally bump into something, repairs will be easy and cheap.
    And, of course, we need more two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles. Not just pedelecs, which are just bicycles with an auxiliary electric motor, but also electric scooters, and I don't mean those annoying mini-scooters, but things like electric Vespas. And electric mopeds, motorbikes, and trikes. We need to get away from the one-size-fits-all motorcar, there's no need to go by car if you're a single person with a bit of baggage. There are cargo trailers that can be hooked up to a bicycle, pedelec, scooter, or moped, and if you use those, you're more flexible than you can be with a cargo bike since you can always leave the trailer at home when you don't need it. If you need to make deliveries, maybe a cargo trike is an option, lorries should only be used if absolutely necessary, and we need to get those huge numbers of lorries out of our cities.

    They out-produce other countries but how many Chinese EVs are bought and driven? There are images of acres upon acres of unsold Chinese-made EVs sitting in fields for years. It’s crazy. I think they were produced for several failed ride-sharing services of some kind. Probably not the best quality vehicles.
