    I am aware of the federal pioneer panel and their failure to trip and bus bar issues. I try to mention it in every video it is seen however I obviously forgot in this one. I do intend to deal with it one day however a panel swap and or circuit move is not a quick job and requires downtime and hundreds of dollars. It is not something I am willing to spend myself so it will have to wait until others decide it is necessary.

    these signs are handy in case of power outages as they run on backup batteries once power is out

    Experimenting with various ways of dampening the output from your bedroom/"man cave" exit sign so it doesn't keep you awake while allowing enough light through to remain functional? I thought I was the only one in the community who had this down to an art form. Glad to see another scientist among us! 😄

    We had federal electric stablok here in the uk too, breakers looked identical, US calls em federal pacific, canada federal pioneer, and uk federal electric. The breakers had the same design but ours were always to BS3871 and contained the thermal and electromagnetic element etc...

    Nice work, Nic! 🤩🤩 I’ve recently just put up an exit sign combo in my room for the same reason. It’s an NFPA standard “EXIT” type with red lettering, and rather than having light heads that face outwards, I chose a sign with a clear tube at the bottom, that floods my room with light. Although, because I don’t have a smoke alarm slot like you did, I took the metal mounting bracket up into my attic, and sandwich the bracket and the sign with the dry wall ceiling in the middle. My dad offered to help me with tapping into the smoke alarm circuit.
    Side topic: as I was searching for signs, I question why the standard for American exit signs are text based, even though the US can be diverse in multiple languages, like California. I would have thought that we could start to integrate similar ISO type signs. Or at least have both as the national standard.

    • @TheChipmunk2008

      USA still uses red exit? very odd... like you say, USA is very multilingual. Our exit signs in the UK even back in the 70s and 80s were always green, to denote safety.... we moved from EXIT to the iso layout a few decades ago

    New subscriber.... UK sparky, the fact about canada requiring the ISO signs is interesting, much more useful than the 'red exit' lol
    In the UK we are required to use arrows to indicate the direction of the exit, there is some contention over signs right above the actual exit....

  • @TheChipmunk2008
    @TheChipmunk2008 3 месяца назад +1

    we get those bars in the UK too, our standard boxes are 2" (50.8mm) on centre, with an M4 thread (used to be 2BA), and it's annoying as hell, have to drill em out, and there's NO room in the box for the connections (wasn't a requirement, still isn't so far as i know, and i've been a sparky for 35 yrs!)... so the central hole has always been an enigma to me.,... makes sense, you have room in the box to use it [edit, we always have to drill them out for the 2 inch centres, annoying)

    You should see if there is a way to wire the light for the sign to the same circuit as the light head units so it only comes on when the power goes out. Obviously not to code but like you said the sign is just for fun. Great video.

    It’s not about the exit sign…. My grandparents have the Edward’s fire alarm which they know how to open. But they also have the one where they pull from the top and push it shut with a screw driver. They don’t know how to use that one well. Should we try to ask our alarm company how to help us? There’s also one which is also like the one in the panel room in ur house. But I know how to use that one…. Point is should we ask our alarm company to help us? Test it for us? How to reset it? I know how put it seems risky….We are getting the pull stations replaced next year.

      For firefighters to connect to their truck to increase building pressure for standpipe connections for firefighters inside to use and often times that is also shared with the sprinkler system and will increase pressure to it as well so taking supply from a fire hydrant running it through their pump and then in to the FDC

    • @nics-systems-electric
      @nics-systems-electric  4 месяца назад

      @@ryderholland yes replacement breakers are an option. this is Canada so I would use the Schneider electric ones as I need a ULC and or CSA listing. however I would prefer to bring the circuits into the new panel as replacing the breakers does not address the bus bar problems. it's actually cheaper to buy new breakers for the new panel than it is to buy the replacement ones. It will come down to when the money is willing to be spent and when there's an opportunity for that much downtime.

  • @marksmith-ew7ir
    @marksmith-ew7ir 4 месяца назад

    Nick in the past you have said the breaker box may not be up to code
    Spend time turning off all. Breakers to find out what they are doing ,so when it's time to upgrade the panel you will have a better idea which breaker is controlling than getting shock in the future video's,may be when everyone is out the house to minimize disruptions.

    • @nics-systems-electric

      Federal pioneer panels are legal and do have a CSA listing I am aware of the potential failure to trip which is why I mention it in almost every video involving it because of comments like this. Changing out a whole panel is not something that can be done in a couple minutes and requires thousands of dollars.
