For the Birds: 8K Wildlife Filming with Pangolin Photo Safaris - Chobe 2021 Ep 1

- I travel to Kasane, check in at the Pangolin Chobe Hotel, then head out on the #Chobe River to do some filming. It's December, the "green season", so there's always a risk of thundershowers, but this is easily made up for by the spectacular skies, the cute baby animals, and the incredible #birdlife (if you are interested in #birdwatching, species names are in the subtitles).
In this series I'm filming in Chobe National Park, Botswana with Pangolin Photo Safaris. We are spending most of our time on Pangolin's boats capturing the incredible wildlife that congregates along the banks of the Chobe river. Pangolin's boats are specially designed for photography, so they are very stable in the water. This makes filming the animals and birds along the river much easier.
Species in this video:
African Fish Eagle
African Jacana
African Openbill
Black Heron
African Darter
Black-crowned Night Heron
Collared Pratincole
Giant Kingfisher
Blue-cheeked Bee-eater
Goliath Heron
Great Egret
Grey Heron
Malachite Kingfisher
African Buffalo
Red-billed Oxpecker
Yellow-billed Oxpecker
Squacco Heron
Pied Kingfisher
Cattle Egret
Lilac-breasted Roller
We don't make any money from these videos (well, that's not entirely true, we have made about $100 over the lifetime of this channel :). So if you like what we do, please consider supporting us on Patreon: / movingpicturesafrica
Filmed and edited by Robert Hofmeyr. Additional shots by Charl and Sabine Stols. Guided by Keeme Magasele and Charles Matengu.
Special thanks to Pangolin Photo Safaris (www.pangolinphoto.com) for their assistance and support on this collaboration.
Behind-the-scenes shot on a GoPro Hero 10. For the telephoto wildlife shots we used a Canon 200-400mm f4 lens on a Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K. Wide angles and moving shots from the boat were shot using a Red Komodo 6K with a Sigma 18-35 f1.8.

My wife and I were on the Chobe with Pangolin last month. Amazing place, great guides and photo hosts.
That's great. I agree it's an incredible place and the guys at Pangolin are the best.
Enchanting photography and music. It felt like I could reach in and touch the animals
Thank you Dara.
Absolutely fantastic work, love every second of these episodes.
I have scheduled a trip with Pangolin safari in Chobe for january 2023. Can't wait to get there and hopefully get a great experience.
Thanks! That's great to hear. I'm sure you will have a fantastic time.
Beautiful birds. Great photography. We really enjoyed this. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Joanne

Thanks Jackie
Love your work, so cool!
Thank you Marko
Hi Robert! I’m happy that you started this series, it’s well made and very interesting. You looks good as a storyteller so keep going. Interesting to see more about that crane how to use it.
I subscribed, didn’t know about this channel ❤️👍🙏
Thanks Alex. Do you remember when we were in Chobe? We also went on a boat but we really struggled because the boat was rocking so much.
Of course I remember, it was great but shaking. Now footage is amazing so will watch how you do it.
Just great!
Thank you.
Loved the heron catching a ride on a hippo. You a birder? If so, your bird count must be pretty good given your many amazing opportunities.
Thanks Jacob. I used to keep a list, but I've become quite slack with my birding.
Terrific footage, thanks Bob. Sorry I'm a bit of a techno-idiot, how do I get to see bird species names?
Thanks John. You need to turn on subtitles. Should be an icon near the bottom right of the video.
If you are on a phone, look for a square with a "cc" in it near the top right.
Nice one Robert. I'm now a constant follower of your work. I can't wait to start doing what you're doing. Beautiful. Heart warming. Epic Cinematic Visuals. Seriously inspiring!
Thanks so much Neo 🙏
Holy shit 12K! are you filming in 8K? what monitor do you even use for editing? what fps? damn so many questions! Fantastic Video and Music and thanks for the captions. I was on my way to Caprivi in 2020 only made it to Bwabwata national park after a few weeks travelling through Kgalagadi and Namibia then I had to shoot through Botswana before our south african lockdown started. missed out on chobe as well. need to try and make a plan for this year and complete the original trip.
Yeah. The Ursa 12K is a crazy camera. I shoot mostly in 12K 50fps, sometimes in 8K 100fps and edit on a MacBook Pro with a 4K HP monitor. To be honest I've never actually seen anything in 8K, I just export as 8K for RUclips because it's easy to change the sequence res in Davinci Resolve before I export. Sorry your trip was cut short by the lockdown. Hope you make a plan to come back.
@@MovingPicturesAfrica that's awesome!, Any plans to make a video on your gear? Like a review / gear walkthrough, like what sort of storage requirements do you need for a 2 week trip to Chobe!, and a 12K editing workflow would be interesting!
@@MV-tc2dx I must try to do something like that. Especially the difficulties when working in the field out of a vehicle. I've included little bits in my videos in the past but I think some comprehensive videos might be useful for people.
