  • Hello everyone, in todays video we will be removing a 2013 Harley Davidson Sportster fuel pump assembly. This fuel pump assembly started having issues with the fuel level light always on. We started noticing debris in the fuel tank and decided to remove it to find out what was going on. With the assembly out we replaced the faulty sensor and also replaced the fuel filter element due to the mileage. When working with fuel always do so in a very well ventilated environment with NO ignition sources nearby. Always refer to the service manual and if not comfortable refer to a licensed motorcycle mechanic. Thanks for checking us out, like and subscribe and as always have fun, be safe and ride on!

This is a fabulous vid and I just used it as a training vid to get ready to pull the pump from my XR1200 and replace both filters and figure out why the float is hanging up and showing false low fuel warning all the time. Thanks a ton my friend.

Thanks you so much! I greatly appreciate the video. It helped as this really isn't covered in the manual.

Looks frustrating enough to wanna try. Smart tip about the dirty fuels from every crappy gas-hole across America along I-40. Guarantee my scooter needs a filter change. Thank you for the great video.

That newly installed fuel level indicator float didn't work when you first reinstalled it, did it?
You need to finagle those wires a bit. They're messing with your mojo

Thx for sharing. and I have a question. My 08 Sportster Nighter error code is P0261 which is fuel injector. Do you think I have tp replace the fuel filter and fuel pump as well like you did here.? I think the fuel inject is bundled in fuel pump and fuel filter which was the broken part in your video right?

Ethanol fuel is hydroscopic so do not leave small fuel tanks full of it for a long time. If storing an EFI motorbike filling with pure petrol is a very good idea. OTOH knowing this can get you bargains on used motorbikes when they won't start.

My low fuel light stays on despite a full tank, and blinks as well. No issues with fuel delivery and the bike runs great. Safe to assume its the fuel level sensor thats gone bad???

I take it you called Drag Specialties in order to get the correct parts and numbers to your model? I looked on the site it is doesn't list those parts.

As much as I’d love to help you I would have to see it to perform any diagnostics. I would suggest testing fuel pressure (assuming it’s fuel injected) and if it’s below spec, you could start with a fuel filter. Another good resource is Hdforums.com. Very knowledgeable regulars on there. Thanks for watching!

Hey, watched your video and find it very educational! This is my learning tool "how to" thingie and has been for long time. Great job on the filter and level sensor. I have a 14 1200XL and I s'pose it is very similar to this unit. My light doesn't stay on as this one does but it comes on pre-maturely like still have 2-2.5 gallons remaining. So, I want to change my level sensor. I have only 8500 miles on it. Would you recommend changing the filter as well or no? I will get the gasket for the assembly to insure no leaks. Thanks for your hard work in putting this video together for all to learn how to save the extra cash. Am going to do this the first chance I get so I won't be gasing up too soon on my rides! Happy cruisin" everyone!! God bless and Jesus loves you, John 3:16-17 (KJV) Lonnie ~~~~ :o)

It certainly could be. It never hurts to remove and inspect it especially since we’re in the colder months anyway. Thanks for watching!

I took the pump out my Heritage to change tanks. That was a pain in the ass too. Why don't Harley just make the hole a little bigger??????????

I can’t imagine what HD would charge to do this. Almost seems easier to just replace the whole (expensive) fuel pump assembly. Too much grunting and groaning going on. But well done anyway.

You forgot to include the wires to ziptie, wires could prevent the fuel level sensor move freely.

it was over £130 ($157) How can that be? I'll get a price for a D/S one after the weekend.

Your video is great, very informative, but your cameraman is a nightmare, you talk about stuff and he's looking elsewhere, you show parts but he can't get them in shot.
