ES trains don't usually switch power at Alb-Rens trains like the Adirondack and ML change to P42DCs. ES trains like 281 and 283 keep P32ACDMs and run them all the way to MF. If that is something they recently starting doing.
last time I took 281 they did not switch power. they have a P32 shortage now though bc they keep breaking down so 281/280 also do an engine change now but 283/284 retain the P32
It sounded like he started the diesel the instant he was away from the platform area of Penn, I thought they waited until just before 47th st when the 3rd rail ends to start the diesel. In any case a major case for electrification on that line in the future.

those things are lemons in electric, have to switch them to diesel as soon as they can
How does the p32ac-dm keep going if they're on electric mode and there's no third rail
