  • In Deep winter snow and Extreme Cold of -27 C I go inter camping and stay overnight I build a bushcraft survival shelter and do some campfire cooking on the grill. I use all natural materials and snow to build my shelter with just boughs and branches. I make a fire with birch and a feather stick from the inner core of pine and cedar. A light snow overnight stayed out of my shelter and I was warm despite the Freezing cold temps.

    I would assume that if it snowed on this particular camp, that would only enhance its insulative properties. You come up with some of the best common sense survival techniques, truly appreciate your videos.

    • @TedBairdShorts
      @TedBairdShorts  Год назад

      Thank you. Yes you are correct actually I believe this is a faster way of making a quinzee if snow was added to the top for insulation. It would quickly harden and insulate and there would be no need to pile and dig out a lot of snow as if often done with a quinzee. Thus saving time, calories and avoiding getting wet when digging out the quinzee

    Loved the shelter! Could you have "woven" some thin branches through to make it a bit more of a wigwam design to be a bit more supportive and then added more boughs or even snow for extra insulation? I'm no fan of the very cold, so I wondered. It definitely looked comfy as it was!

    • @TedBairdShorts
      @TedBairdShorts  Год назад +1

      Yes those all would have been good improvements. The best being adding the snow it will insulate very well and block all wind essentially making a quinzee. It can be above freezing inside a well made quinzee even when -40 outside

    Nice, certainly hear from the snow crunching that it was cold, about how long from start to finish was shelter building, amazing how hard the snow gets when moved and piled up, for example, the snow bench you were sitting on, we enjoy your videos

    • @TedBairdShorts
      @TedBairdShorts  Год назад +1

      Hey I agree it is amazing how quickly it firms up. There is a scientific process that happens when when the crystals are disturbed that causes the reaction despite it already being so cold out it needs to be moved for that to happen. It is like powder and not easy to form at first then freezes into a block super interesting. Glad you're enjoying the videos. Thanks for tuning in

    I'm going through the video list next to check out some of your other works, hopefully you have a few ideas that I can use for my upcoming build.
