Just watched this - I did buy mine a while ago and thought it would be good for stealth camping . I haven’t even unpacked it yet so I guess I will have a few defect to look forwards to . I guess you get what you pay for but I have been burned with expensive products too .
Have a look at the OEX phoxx II v2. I bought the phoxx 1 initially and it's not far of being a coffin 🤣. Great quality tent that really does take a battering and still stands
I've got the XL version of this tent and I do recommend it. It's good in rough weather, but some of the poles have split. Looks like you had an annoying manufacturing defect. The XL version is ok for a 6 footer with gear. Hope you get something better, shame you had hassle with it.
I had the exact same tent in black but labelled as a 'Gelert Track 1 Tent' from Sports Direct. The metal elbows on the poles may as well be made from chewing gum as they are not strong at all. I ended up printing replacements using my 3D printer and they ended up stronger! Good review. 👍🏽
If you tie two separate lines to the tops of both inner tent polls and run them under and out of the rain fly at either end you can tension the inner tent for a better pitch.
Great vid mate love the dog ...my go to,is my OEX phoxx 2 you'll get all your gear and the dog,two doorways with vestibules, big enough for cooking in 🌲⛺🔥🤪👍
Good review Ben. At first I was kind of excited about this one. The price and weight along with the camo print made me think it would be great for a stealth camp. But as soon as I saw those poles and pegs I was put off. The Phoxx I looks much better at a similar price point. As you know, I have the Phoxx II which is very high quality for the price and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thanks for the review buddy. Look forward to more! Oh, and finally something you’ve reviewed that I don’t feel a need to buy, that will make the wife happy!
bought one of these last year off ebay for £20 (new, used once in a garden), ok as a summer tent for a small camp / bugout kit, and as you said you need to do a few mods, also be aware the fibre glass poles are also prone to splitting, so I wrapped some electrical tape around just below all the metal connectors, so far they have not yet failed, the fitting of the poles can be a very tight fit to the fly sheet, which can cause the poles to fail, for £20 (and a few mods) I'm happy to keep it as a spare / backup
I would concur with Chris Stuart in that the OEX Phoxx II v2 is an excellent all round, larger 1 man tent. I bought mine about a year ago and only this weekend got it out of the bag into the field. Although it did remain dry, no rain, the tent was so easy to put up, kept all my kit inside, had an inflatable mat and sleeping bag, but performed extremely well. I'm only sorry I left it so long to use, it is really good quality. Love the dog (Ruby ?) clearly loves her squeaky toys.......
nice video Ben some good points made, its why I come here to youtube and get the reviews from likeminded people. hopefully you enjoy the phoxx 1 I havent had any problems with mine.
I had a Phoxx 1 EV for 2 years, used it loads, brilliant 1 person tent. 1.4kg, packed small, alloy poles and pegs, felt like a quality item. Sold it on ebay the other week for more than I paid for it new. I only sold it as I prefer my Berghaus Peak 3.1, which is heavier at 1.9kg, but more comfortable. I think both tents may be out of production now.
You deserve a medal for the brilliant way you managed your performance. It’s true: never work with children or animals, although the dog’s performance did make me laugh. Nice review thanks, but sorry it didn’t work out.
I got this tent to hike and wild camp along hadrians wall. Did a test camp in it and everything seemed fine. First night of my hadrians wall trip and one of the pokes snapped. It was a compleat disaster. My friend had the Oex phox 1, very similar tent, very similar price but with much better poles. Buy that one instead!!!
Enjoyed the review thank you Ben- the tent is okay if you don't like space but this one is pretty small for me- I usually go for a two man tent because of my size. The quality isn't good for the money you paid for it and I agree with you it should be at least usable when you buy it. You did right sending it back to the manufacturer.
Hi Ben, good review. Just a quick shout out to Wingfields. They have a large store in Hull and although this particular tent was not up to much, I have bought lots of products from them and the staff have been very helpful. As for small stealthy tents, it's always a compromise between size and space. For me I tend to use my Vango Banshee which fits me and my gear and still is low profile enough to be hidden away. Cheers Ben and look forward to your next video
I've got one used it for one night in the garden with the dog. Felt solid to me and it rained too and was fine. I read somewhere of people buying the spare phoxx 1 poles to upgrade it. I bought it to try wildcamping but as I can't sit up in it or fit gear inside will probably just take my 2 man.
Its a bivvy + cover. It does look more cold than tents that are fully material with no ventilation mesh. That bivvy has a lot of ventilation mesh, but one is meant to deal with temperature by using a proper sleeping bag & lofting. The reason why the bivvy has so much ventilation mesh is so that its still fully sealed off to keep you out of danger from nighttime prowlers, but condensation doesn't build up & start dripping inside. Chinese junk bivvys have no cover & are just a bivvy with no ventilation mesh. So if rain hits your face you wake up, if you haven't already died from toxic things with eyes. If you zip up chinese junk bivvy doors which have useless hinges at the bottom... you suffercate & wake up. Plus drips fall on you. This design seems worth considering & multicam is a good choice. My advice is to avoid most chinese products at all cost.
Was actually going to buy this tent but went with the OEX Phoxx one V2. Very similar in design, but hopefully better quality. Haven't got to field test it just yet though.
Coincidental LOL mine arrived yesterday, put it up last night, its Ok quality for the price BUT, put my airbed and pillow in and its to short for me, my head and feet are pushed into the netting and I’m only 5’9”. Oh well.
Personally I’d recommend the berghaus 3.1 tent. Slightly more expensive around £110 but a lot better quality with aluminium poles etc… I’ve used in the pissing rain for a week and stayed dry
I personally prefer a 2 man tent for my wildcamping. I'd feel too claustrophobic in there. My cloud up 2 is perfect for me, my bag and all me shit. Good review 👍
It’s just the style of the tent I think. I like a one or two man I can sit up in. Both my helm 1 and cloud up 2 work for me. I was hoping this would be my special ‘stealth’ tent. The search continues…
The Blackthorn looks pretty poor regardless of the poles, I imagine the OEX Phoxx would be better but in all honesty although it's significantly more expensive you might want to consider the Wild Country Zephyros 1. I have one myself and prefer it over the Terra Nova Laser 2 man I had previously. At 5'10" I can sit up (just) in the Zephyros 1, it pitches inner/fly together although I modified mine to pitch fly 1st so I could pack the inner separately. Alternatively the Wild Country Coshee Micro looks pretty decent. In any case I'll be interested to see what you decide on.
Thanks for watching mate 👍 I’ve got a Wild Country Helm 1 that I LOVE. But wanted to find something as cheap as possible that is still usable. The search continues 😆
@@DaleyOutdoors Yeah I knew you had the Helm 1, a tent I like the look of myself. Difficult to find something smaller as it rules out almost any 2 man tent, if you want something fairly stealth it rules out anything that isn't green or camo and at sub £75 there isn't a lot of choice, even sub £100 the options are scarce. The OEX Phoxx 1 looks like the best option, any smaller and you're looking at a bivy tent or a tarp/basha. A tarp/basha pretty much requires a bivy bag but offers no midge protection unless you add a nest and at that point even using surplus gear (which is heavy) the cost is creeping up to £70+ and the weight is creeping up too, the British army bivy isn't a lightweight option.
