    I use those cheap light grey vitmossa fleece blankets to make design boards. In my country foam board and quilt batting is very very expensive so i cut up thick cardboard boxes into squares. Cut the blankets in squares a little bigger. Then i spread a little glue to attach the blanket and finish them by baste stitch or blanket stitching them with some bright colored crochet string. I have a stack of them in different sizes and it's really convenient for work in progress. I also have one i taped to the wall as a design board.
    In a pinch and also to practice FMQ I also use these cheap blankets as batting. They are great!
    I think they have recently been discontinued but there will be some other to replace them soon. I also store fabric and notions with the Trofast boxes.
    Thanks for the tips! 💕

    I just turned 77 and am a prime example of why you CAN teach old dogs new tricks. I am fully immersed in modern quilt making. For most modern quilts, solids are the stars of the show. Even when I fall back to a more traditional quilt pattern with a traditional line of fabrics (florals for me) I must have two to three solids to pull together the entire look of the project. My daughter is a beginner quilter and I would love to win this bundle to give her "stash" a good solid jumpstart.

    When I put my Raskog together I turned the top piece upside down so it’s a flat surface rather than a storage bin. I keep my serger on it next to my sewing table. I can wheel it around as needed. I store lots of sewing supples in the two spaces underneath.

    One room of our house is used for sewing/quilting/crafts or housing a guest. In it, I have 2 Alex units (one has a file drawer) that hold a desk top which is used for sewing supplies, watercolors, papercrafting/stamping, seasonal craft ideas in folders and basic tools. The sewing machine sits underneath it between the 2 Alex units when not in use and it works well to keep things contained but close at hand regardless of what I am working on. I have a couple IKEA canvas baskets that have wooden lids with a hole in the lid to allow for air flow which holds fabric for small projects. I covered a wood board with batting and fabric and put on a small dresser for ironing quilt squares. I used canvas duck cloth to make a sewing machine cover and imagine the IKEA fabric you mentioned would also work nicely for that.

  • @AW-pz3qc
    @AW-pz3qc 2 года назад +1

    My sewing room furniture is all from Ikea too! Unfortunately I don't live close to a store so I bought secondhand items locally which had the added benefit of being assembled, so more time for sewing.
    I cut french cleats from timber in my workshop and rotated vertical bookshelves to horizontal and hung them on the wall, just above head height when sitting at the machine, but still reachable. Patterns in storage baskets all live up there. When you have a small sewing room you have to be creative when it comes to storage. ;-)

    I started a prayer quilt ministry at church, we have a dedicated space. We have the antonious units under our sewing stations along a wall, and placed table tops we made our own tops with plywood and 1/4 round molding on the edges. This way each sewer has drawers with supplies at each station. We also have some that are stacked and hold things like software for the machines.we also use the billy book cases with 1/2 glass half wood doors for fabric and quilt storage

    I miss Antonius! I have two in my bedroom closet with my scarves and sweaters and 5 in my sewing room for yardage, stacked in pairs. No wheels. They came with clips to hold units nicely together, and the frames had bumps in the top and dimples in the bottom which also help them stay stacked. I don't know about the newer ones but these are features to look for.

    I love my adjustable table/desk from IKEA. With the touch of a button, I can raise or lower to accommodate my needs, wheterh Im sewing, embroidering, cutting, planning, or if I just need to change position. The IDASEN frame is very sturdy-enough for my machine in 1000 stitch per minute embroidery mode. You can choose frame colors, table top color and size. You can order it with the electric adjuster and can be anywhere from 24” to 50” high. It can be ordered without adjustable unit, but you still would get to choose the fixed height between 24” and 30.”

    I have 3 narrow Billy bookcases in my sewing room. Two hold my yardage and AccuQuilt cubes and dies. One is used for precuts, panels, and kits. As well as my CDs for my stereo. I have two other cubbies that I use for holding packs of batting, my patterns, embroidery hoops, stabilizers, empty bags, blanks for embroidery, and freezer paper. I bought those before I found IKEA. I also have a garage work bench to use with the AccuQuilt cutter. I store the long dies under it in the large wire storage racks. I also have two large bins with yarn stored here. I also have an inexpensive cutting table that is starting to get rickety. I sew on a 6 ft. plastic table which shimmies like crazy if I go to fast. I want to get the pegboard from IKEA to hang some of my tools in different parts of the room. We have stopped going into stores for the time being, so will try and get to IKEA when Covid slows down and look at some of your suggestions. I really need help organizing the room and your suggestions sound wonderful. Thanks for all the advice. I appreciate all your advice.

    I use the Ragrund next to my sewing machine. It looks like a towel rack on the back of a chair. I hang my finished quilt tops on it to inspire me to finish them. and use the chair for storage.

    I'm on the west coast and the nearest Ikea is 6 hours away :-(
    I wish we had one closer! I would love to use some of the storage units in my sewing studio.

      The stores ship to your home if they have less than 6 units in the store, then over-the-phone shipping is the only way to purchase it anyway. I live 250 miles away and would have had to go to 3 stores to buy the 4 units I wanted. The shipping cost me $25.00. It was so economical. If there was something I didn’t want I can bring it back!

    Just bought 3 nordli dressers to fit under my long arm table replacing some metal kitchen storage units which started to look a little untidy. I also have a large kallex which I purchased second hand. You inspired me to look at the billy bookcase. Thanks for your video.

    I have a couple of Ikea items you didn't mention. One is a DVD shelf for fat quarter storage that is about as tall as my closets and fits the narrow wall space between two closets. The other item is metal wall-mounted magazine holders with 5 pockets for magazines. I have 3 of these hung vertically on the wall.

      Yes, I'e heard of using the DVD unit for that type of storage although I don't have any of these in my studio. Good idea for the magazine holders but that wouldn't be nearly enough for all of my magazines 😉🤣 Watch for another Ikea video coming out on February 1.

    I’ve been looking at the Kallhall Gateleg table to be used as a cutting and sewing table. I checked one out in IKEA and it seems very stable. Unfortunately, there are not any in stock in my area. But you may be interested in checking them out.

    I purchased many of those antonius carts , tops, and drawers over the years for kitchen storage of potatoes, onions, etc. and threw every one of them away. The drawers never fit on the rails and were always falling down. There must be some secret to how to prevent this.

    What are you using to cut materials?? Also I have XL clear containers at least 6 full of containers filled with quilting materials of Christmas material and 2 of those wire drawers on wheels, I make Christmas ornaments for my grandchildren and quilts, never know how much I need material. I have a Billie bookcase with clear doors, that is filled with my Santa collection, love Christmas, my tree is up for at least 1 1/2 years. I can’t work too much, due to I tore my right shoulder from cutting material, can you help with any idea’s ?

      My cutting surface is the Martelli Advantage table and it comes with a very large cutting mat. I use their rulers and ergonomic cutters to cut my fabric. Die cutters, such as the AccuQuilt GO! and others are helpful if you struggle with cutting.

    Thank you for all your Ikea tips. I love that background behind you! Is that fabric? If so, can you tell me which line?

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  2 года назад

      Yes, it's a wide back - not sure of the fabric line as I've had it for several years and it's been "modified" for the background.

    They don’t sell fabrics in IKEA Australia 🤮but I use the wide 6 drawer Alex as bedside tables, they are amazing. IKEA is my go to for all my quilting needs

      They do sell fabric in Australia. I live in Canberra and have bought lots of fabric. They do have lighter weight cottons as well. I have also bought doona covers which give you 4 metres of fabric for around A$20. I use large drawer units for my fabric, folded so that it sits upright "a la Marie Kondo" I can see easily what I have and select quickly. Larger pieces I store in kallax units.

    Hi Kim, can you tell me how far the Alex drawers pull out. I would like to store large embroidery thread in new drawers. The one I have now , the drawers are not deep enough and don't pull out far enough because I have to pull them out and remove some thread to see what colour are at the back of the drawer. THANKS Pauline

      Your best bet is to check out the dimensions on the Ikea website for your country. They don't pull all the way out - I have cones in them and yes, you have to dig a bit at the back.

    Would the curtain rod with the rings with clips be able to hold up a finished quilt for display?
    Thank you.

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  2 года назад +1

      I'm not sure about that as it depends on the size and weight of the quilt (depends on batting). I don't use these myself but know other quilters who do and they do have finished lap-size quilts held up with these clips.

    I am curious about your lovely lavender cutting mat. Where can I get one like it? I often find it hard to see the edges of my fabric on the green ones. Thanks.

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  2 года назад +1

      This is a Martelli cutting mat. It's purple on one side and yellow on the other so it's great to use for any colour of fabric. You can find out more about it and their other amazing products at bit.ly/martellicode. (I'm a Martelli affiliate and might receive a small amount of compensation if you order items through this link. Thanks you!).
