  • In today’s video, I’m excited to share 5 top day hikes in Olympic National Park!
If you’re planning a trip to Olympic, these five hikes make a great core itinerary. They showcase the park’s three ecosystems: dramatic coastline, lush rainforest, and mountains.
I’ll also share a fabulous sixth hike that’s nearby but outside the park boundaries, plus two hikes that are very popular but I’d recommend skipping if you’re short on time.

Do you need any sort of parking permit for Cape Flattery. Also any way to cut down the distance to Point of Arches?

I really enjoyed this video about good hiking spots. Great video resolution, nice brief descriptions of each recommended hikes. The video was professionally presented, unlike other video presentations, which are like photo ops. Great thanks for the great info on Olympic National Park. I know which hiking spots to go when I return to Olympic N.P. 😊😊😊

Do you have suggestion for winter hikes...average road conitions at Olympic Nationa Park?

Unfortunately I haven't been to the park in the winter, but my understanding is that the coast and rainforest hikes are likely to be accessible (but be prepared for lots of mud and chilly, rainy conditions in the rainforest!). The coast can get pretty wild in the winter in terms of waves during high tides and storms, so make sure to check conditions before you go. That said, storm-watching on the coast is a great winter activity if done safely. Here's a good resource for storm-watching spots on the Olympic coast: www.myolympicpark.com/things-to-do/outdoor-recreation/storm-watching-coast/
More specifically, I think the Hoh River Trail, Rialto Beach, and Cape Flattery would likely be good options. Shi Shi Beach is notorious for being muddy in the best of times, so I'd expect it to be extra muddy in winter. Cape Flattery is outside the park and requires a Makah recreational use permit.
Mountain hiking (like in the Hurricane Ridge area) wouldn't be accessible for standard hikes, though snowshoeing may be an option if the area is open. The road to Hurricane Ridge is sometimes closed in the winter based on snow conditions, but there have been additional closures this year due to a fire at the lodge. Here's a good place to check for the latest on road conditions to that area (and others) in the park: www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/conditions.htm
      Have a great trip!

Any advice on road conditons at Olympic National Park in Decmber?

I haven't been there in December yet, but I think the road conditions can be spotty in the mountain regions (like Hurricane Ridge), but they're generally okay in the lowland rainforest areas and the coast, barring unusual storms. Here's a good resource to check closer to your visit, so you can get the latest: www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

Is Hurricane hill open? I was told that whole area was closed until June.

I do think it’s closed right now. There was also a fire this week at the Hurricane Ridge lodge, so I’m not sure when the area will reopen, unfortunately.

Sadly the ridge is closed as the visitors center burned to the ground and the road up is closed indefinitely just beyond the Heart of the Hills campground. The building will be rebuilt but it's going to take a while.

They limit the amount of cars at the ridge, recommend taking the Clallam Transit that makes 7 trips during the day.
