48 Hours in Olympic National Park | Maybe the MOST Diverse National Park in the Country

  • We spend the weekend in Olympic National Park which has to be one of the most diverse national parks in the country. It stretches over nearly a million acres on Washington’s west coast and encompasses beaches, rugged coastlines, dense rainforest, and mountains.
    Day 1
We get started in the northern part of the peninsula with a hike up to Mt Storm King. This is a very popular out and back day hike in the park and it is around 5 miles round trip with 2,000 feet of elevation gain.
The trail starts at the Storm King Ranger station and is flat for around 10 minutes before it turns off on the Storm King Trail. This is where the incline begins… we make our way up switchback after switchback through the trees for around an hour or so before reaching the “End of maintained trail” sign.
From here there is a bit of trail that’s along a ledge and very narrow and shortly after, we reach the infamous fixed ropes section. I was pretty nervous for this section with steep cliffs and slippery ground underfoot but we take it slow and make our way up the 3 sections of ropes.
After the ropes there is a short rock scramble to the top. If I am being honest, I thought this part was worse than the ropes because it is very exposed on both sides, but luckily it is quick and at the top we are rewarded with an awesome view of Lake Cresent. It is pretty cloudy and very windy but we have a double rainbow over the lake which makes up for the lack of visibility.
We don’t hang around long because of the wind.. we make our way back across the rock scramble and down the ropes before continuing the rest of the way down the trail. We take the quick detour to Marymere Falls which adds about 1 mile round trip and is definitely worth the extra effort!
From Lake Cresent we head about 30 minutes to Sol Duc Falls. This is an easy 1.6 mile trail that leads through a green, mossy forest. The views of the falls are beautiful, tumbling beneath a wooden footbridge.
We end the day at Ruby Beach which is famous for its sea stacks, tide pools and driftwood. It is very cloudy and misty but we walk on the beach for a couple hours before the sun goes down, admiring all the sea life in the tide pools.
    Day 2
We start day 2 at Rialto Beach and hike to the Hole In The Wall. This is a 3.8 mile round trip hike along the beach and as the name implies, there is an opening in a rock formation that is only passable at low tide.
We get started at sunrise and take the nice stroll along the beach until we reach the Hole In The Wall which we pass through to reach the northern side of the beach. We explore the area for a couple hours enjoying the sea stacks and tide pools.
We make our way back through as the tide is coming in and start heading back down the beach. It makes for quite the adventure since the tide is coming in quick!
From Rialto Beach we head to the Hoh Rainforest. This is one of the largest temperate rainforests in the US and is absolutely magical! We hike along the Hoh River Trail which is around 30 miles in total so we plan to hike for 3-4 miles and then turn around.
The trees are covered in this bright green moss and the trail runs along the river. It really is so beautiful and serene and peaceful. This is quite the different feel then our normal hikes when we have a distinct destination in mind but it is really nice to take things slow and enjoy all the small details of the forrest.
We end our day at Kalaloch Beach for sunset. It is pretty cloudy so we don’t get much of a sunset but this beach is really cool because there is something called “Tree of Life” here. This old sitka spruce hangs precariously over a creek on the beach front. All of the dirt has eroded away beneath it but somehow the tree is still alive and standing strong!
We walk along the beach for a bit and while the sun never makes an official debut, the sky puts on a show and turns colors of bright pink and orange. It really is the perfect way to end our time in Olympic National Park!

Come back in the summer, there's a campground between the glaciers on top of Mt. Olympus, the view is stunning. My first time on Rialto beach was in 1964, now my grandkids are walking on it. Nice video!

This brings back so many memories for me: been here in 1958 (I was 8 YO), 1968, 1970, 1974, and 1998 (with my wife and daughters). Every trip was exceptional, but 1998 was the most enjoyable! My daughters must have spent 6 hours walking the beach (while my wife spent time snoozing in the car: oh, well)! Most impressive are the different expressions of Mother Nature's handiwork, all in one place! This could almost be three different parks, they are so different. President Roosevelt deserves all the credit for enabling of this park; without hm it would be a clear-cut wasteland (the lumbermen would never pass up an area like this)! Thank you much for this!!!

During stormy weather, one needs to keep their wits about them and watch out for rolling beach logs. A late friend of mine lost one of his two daughters to a wave-swept log out there. The family had brought a developmentally-disabled young friend along for the hike. Apparently, my friend's daughter was the only one who saw the danger approaching. She rushed in at the last moment and shoved her friend clear, but she was crushed by the log herself.
I believe the National Park Service posted signs alerting visitors to the danger as a result of the tragedy. I can't vouch for that personally, since I haven't been on one of the beaches in decades myself--I'm more a fan of forest and mountains with fewer visitors; and we have many places offering such solitude on the peninsula.
By the way, Kalaloch is pronounced with a hard "A" on the second syllable.
Nice to see someone overcome her fear and enjoy an exposed promontory despite that hindrance.

Being so close and not seeing it to go with the Tree of Life is the world's largest Alaska Sitka Tree at Lake Quinault . From here hike into the Enchanted Forest where you can find 2 species of Hemlock which also are the world's record Hemlocks , the world's biggest Red Cedar tree is no longer here coming down in a storm.
My 1st hike I was 15 and spent 7 days and 55 miles from Staircase to Lake Quinault going through the Enchanted Valley in 66. The Olympics are my favorite hikes then the Goat Rocks cause I live close and then N. Cascades.

You guys seem like normal people, with normal "abilities" (I mean that in the nicest way--I am also afraid of heights and remember even in places like the Grand Canyon, I had to get on all fours when the wind picked up). OMG! those places are beautiful, right out of a Jurassic Park movie! I am getting ready to move into my "rig" (of some sort) and hit the road as a full-timer, hopefully in about 5 to 7 months. Last night I was planning my itinerary, enjoying in anticipation, and was playing with ideas throughout the whole WA State, and this morning: voila! I found your video that blew my mind away and made me realize I do have to consider spending waaaaay more time than what I thought necessary in that area!!! You made me laugh with the high tide run and scaring the seagulls away in the last scene is just worthy of a big screen movie!!! So thank you for all of that, really helpful. Question: are there bears in that area? Is it safe to walk those forests? Do you have bear spray or something like that? Thank you again, Adriana :)

You should check out some of our other Washington videos... the North Cascades were AMAZING!! The Enchantments has to be the most beautiful place I have ever seen! As far as bears go... there are definitely bears in the North Cascades. We saw a couple of black bears up there. I believe they are in Olympic too. We always erred on the side of caution and carried bear spray with us on our hikes. Good luck with all the planning.. happy to answer any questions! Not sure how far you are in the planning process but Idaho was another favorite of ours! This was not on our initial itinerary but I am SO happy we added it!

Thanks so much for watching! AHH that is so tough because they are so different! We reallllllly loved North Cascades... the mountains were rugged and beautiful and it felt incredibly remote. Are you guys big hikers? It seemed like North Cascades requires a bit of effort/ longer hikes to really see. If you happen to be into backcountry camping, there were some incredible opportunities for that (we were sad we didn't get to with weather, timing, etc). But Olympic is amazing too.. and so diverse and you can do some short/ easy hikes and really get to see a lot. It depends on your interests but I can tell you for me personally, I would pick North Cascades but we really love hiking in the mountains. Eeek hope this helps some... it's a tough one!

@@WaypointofView Thank you it's all very helpful!! I think we're leaning a little more towards Olympic right now just because of the diversity of hikes, and one of our concerns with North Cascades was our inexperience with mountain hiking, but I know it will be beautiful either way!

Can anyone mention what things can we cover in a day in Olympic national park.I am planning to take my girlfriend.

Olympic NP has so much to offer... there are mountains, beaches, rainforests, etc. It's pretty spread out though so it depends on what your interests are. If you only have 1 day, you could focus on the Hurricane Ridge area if you love hiking in the mountains... or on the coast if you're more interested in beaches. Or you could pick a beach or 2 and then head inland to the Hoh Rainforest which is beautiful! We covered everything in this video in 2 days but it was a lot of driving and they were very, very long days. Enjoy your trip.

Please stop saying “sketchy” that’s ghetto. The correct wording is “Challenging”. You guys are so annoying.
