I grew up in the '50s and my grandmother had 11 brothers. Almost all of them were in the military at some point and they were all given these wool itchy dark green blankets. I'm not sure how we ended up with them but growing up we use them as batting. This is exactly how we finished off our quilts. Sometimes instead of quilting the actual quilt in the middle we would use yarn and tie off knots every four or five inches the width of our hand. Some of these blankets I still have to this day. My mother is alive and well and she remembers vividly are quilting moments with my sisters
I love this story!! I have several family members that have those same blankets and I had wondered how they would work as batting. How do they hold up over the years?
Thank you for being so clear about what you are doing and having the camera pointed right where you are working. I cut and sewed my first fat quarter quilt today and had to idea how to finish it. This is perfect! P.S. it's a quilt for the kitties.
Thank you for making this so simple. I made quilts like this decades ago and haven't kept up on the hobby, so I forgot how. We have a new grandson this Christmas and I wanted to make something handmade for him. Now it'll be done in a jiffy!
Thank you so much. I’m going to make a fidget quilt for my Mom who has dementia. My skills are not great so I need something simple. Your instructions were clear and I enjoyed your background music.
Thank you for explaining this and showing us just how calm you can be when you quilt, and bind your quilt. Your voice is so clear and you explain how to bind in such a way, I feel confident I can do this. Thank you.
This was really helpful I am new at quilting and forgot to put the binding on and didn’t know what to do now I know that I can use the backing…thanks for sharing 🙌🏽
Great video! I was wondering how I was going to bind my quilt! I'm a new quilter, and binding kind of scares me. I will definitely use this method! Thank you! And the background music is so relaxing! 😊
Great instruction. I may sew down that mitered corner myself because I feel that it might come undone. Never used the backing for the binding but have always wanted to. Think I will with my current project.
This is a GREAT video! I am a beginning quilter and I love your method for binding. I can't wait to try it out. One other comment is the background music is a little loud and I found it distracting. Thank you for your video.
Thank you! I'm so happy you took up quilting. If you need to refer back to this tutorial, we also uploaded it without music, but the algorithm picked up this one instead
I just put my new walking foot on my first machine to quilt my first baby quilt. Do I use the walking foot to do this part also or change back to regular presser foot. New to sewing as well🙄
I might suggest pressing the binding first before taking it to the machine. Regrettably, twisted binding will not right itself in the wash as it is sewn in place and the weave is not pressed and sewn square.
If it's small, you could use fray check and a whip stitch. If its larger, you may want to consider a patch, which if it matches the front of your quilt, might be a nice artistic touch
This is the bit I'm struggling with ive no idea how to put backing on I keep getting it wrong I'm new to patchwork and sewing I don't have certain items I cnt afford.
The easiest and cheapest method I have found for basting is with safety pins. I understand about the cost of supplies. Most of my sewing supplies are things I found around the house or even at the hardware store.

@@KarefreeKrafting excellent. Not to mention they fold easily. I recommend you try one as batting. When we cover a guest bed the corners fall nicely

Thank you! I’ve not seen this technique done. I knew it existed just not how to go about it. Thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick. 🤗

Thank you so much for your kind words! You can do anything!
So helpful. Thank you so much. You saved my quilting experience!!
I'm new to quilting and I felt a little scared for this step. Thank you for showing this step slow and clear directions! I'm ready to go forward now!!
This was really helpful I am new at quilting and forgot to put the binding on and didn’t know what to do now I know that I can use the backing…thanks for sharing 🙌🏽
Clear and easy to follow instructions thank you!
So helpful. Thank you, beginner quilter

You made it so simple for me!!! I love it, thank you :-)
Thank you so much for this video! My quilt looks amazing!!!
We would love to see it! Show us a pic in the kraftaholics anonymous facebook group!
Very helpful! You seem highly knowledgeable
Ok this is WAY easier than the way I was taught. Thanks!
Great instruction. I may sew down that mitered corner myself because I feel that it might come undone.
Never used the backing for the binding but have always wanted to. Think I will with my current project.
Thankyou for the lesson
This was a lot of help. Thank you.
Thank you for this video. i wanted to try this too and found this . WONDER if a walking foot would help with the puckering..
Thank you for sharing
Thank you
Thank you!
Thank you so much! I really hate binding my quilts. The corners are an issue.
I don't mind the binding but I hate the basting!

Wow. This looks sooo easy. It just makes sense. Thank you. Why isn’t this widely taught? Are there any downsides to this?
No downsides that I have found except the occasional puckering I mentioned in the video! Thank you for watching
Would this method work if using fleece as the backing? Not expecting to use batting.
I haven't tried it, but if you try it, I would love to know the results
I do fleece all the time- no problems
I just put my new walking foot on my first machine to quilt my first baby quilt. Do I use the walking foot to do this part also or change back to regular presser foot. New to sewing as well🙄
You can do it either way, but the walking foot will make it easier
TFS!
I might suggest pressing the binding first before taking it to the machine. Regrettably, twisted binding will not right itself in the wash as it is sewn in place and the weave is not pressed and sewn square.
What can I do to repair a cut in the backing? I snipped it as I trimmed the batting. Help

So, you don’t iron the binding folds 1st?
No, most fabrics are ok with just pins or clips. Also, only iron if you are using 100%cotton batting.
Can you help, I can hear audio, but have a solid green screen and no video! Thanks
Is it only happening on this video?
Thanks for responding, I switched browser and was able to watch. Thank you!
Thank you for the easy explanation. Music is terrible to listen to.
We heard you loud and clear and uploaded a new version without the music!
Good lesson. The music is distracting though-not necessary.
Not fond of the music. Video great.

It wont be used again
Music is distracting . Otherwise nic tutorial.
Thank you for your feedback. If you need to refer back to this tutorial, there is a version without music.
Great video but music was horrible & way to loud
I can do without that music though.
Please turn your music off it's very distracting...
We heard you loud and clear and uploaded a new version without the music
Had to stop listening. The music was distracting.. Missed everything you said.
Sorry to hear that. We reuploaded a version without the music if you want to check it out
