Woodstock Festival 1969 Then and Now (1969 - 2022) How Have They Changed 53 Years Later?

  • The Woodstock Music and Arts Fair, better known by the simpler Woodstock Festival, was an event that took place in Bethel, a small rural town in upstate New York, United States of America, from August 15 to 18 of 1969, at the height of the spread of hippie culture. It is often referred to with the expression 3 Days of Peace & Rock Music, "three days of peace and rock music". 400,000 to 500,000 spectators were estimated.
    The name originates from the city of Woodstock, in Ulster county, known for its artistic activities (art festivals are organized there) and was the last major manifestation of the movement which since then has spread more and more outside the USA, where he was born, even without the cohesion and originality that had allowed events such as the Monterey Pop festival, the Summer of Love in San Francisco and the Woodstock festival itself in the sixties.
    Woodstock was conceived as a provincial festival (and as "An Aquarian Exposition", the name, with a modest tone, with which it was advertised) but unexpectedly welcomed more than 400,000 young people (according to uncertain sources, even a million people) . Thirty-two of the best-known musicians and groups of the time took turns on stage and the event ended a day later than expected (it had been scheduled until the 17th), all with the consumption of enormous quantities of Cannabis and LSD, including famous "Orange Sunshine". The festival had a great symbolic charge whose notoriety continues today and was a great event in the history of rock and costume.
    An eponymous festival has been revived every ten years since the original and, in 1994, to celebrate twenty-five years since; each time new artists, absent in the previous editions, are hosted together with musicians who have already performed on that stage: thus these events, cyclically, give an idea of the transformation of society (especially in the United States) from the first hippie inspiration to the most recent editions , which also saw episodes of violence and a commercial nuance far from the cheerful and utopian atmosphere of the "hippies".

    Yes, we are now the 'seniors'. Some of us continue to celebrate this anniversary every year. This is a peculiar bit of music for 'Woodstock'. Peace

    It's int'resting to me that Blood Sweat and Tears never appeared in the Woodstock '69 movie (seems strange)

    Loved the video. I was there in '69 but didn't see every band as you had to sleep at some point. Two errors here that I know of. The updated photo for Robbie Robertson isn't Robbie. That's a photo of Ronnie Hawkins whom Robbie played with previously. And the singer with BS&T at Woodstock was David Clayton Thomas, not Al Kooper who previously sang with the band. Also David Crosby died today. RIP. Loved his voice.

    What a line up!! Since you only showed Carlos Santana, the rest of the band is alive with the exemption of David Brown, bass player.

      @dubuqueblues69 Год назад +2

      Yes.....the guys that helped make it all happen!! Michael Lang passed away last year sadly. Max Yasgur died in 73 but as far as I know Artie, Chip and Hugh are still around.
      Also John Roberts, who mostly financed it, passed away very young in the early 2000s. RIP Michael and John and all involved as well as so many performers like Keef Hartley who performed and wasn't mentioned here.

    Sam Andrew was fired fbefore Woodstock and John Till was the Kozmic Blues Band`s guitar player at Woodstock. Mark Kapner was the Fish`s keyboard player at Woodstock, not David Cohen, and Doug Metzner was the bass player, not Bruce Barthol and finally Greg Dewey was the drummer, not Chicken Hirsh. Founding member of Blood, Sweat & Tears, Al Kooper had left by August 1969 and was replaced by David Clayton-Thomas, and Lew Soloff was the trumpet player, not Jerry Weiss, who together with Randy Brecker preceeded him. Elvin Bishop had left The Paul Butterfield Blues Band long before Woodstock, and Buzzy Feiten plays the guitar there, and Rod Hicks plays the bass, not original bassist Jerome Arnold, and on the drums is Phillip Wilson, not original drummer Sam Lay.
