I just recently started woodworking. I'm learning from what I call "RUclips University." Just recently came across your channel and I love it. My daughter is getting married in May and I told her I would help her build blanket ladders and she could sell them. We just finished our first one tonight and stained it dark walnut. She's so excited about woodworking now. Thanks for your great channel and your positivity. God bless you and your family.

So, I signed up for the newsletter on the 731 website and started checking out the site. I came across this project and the video which is perfect since my daughter has been asking for a blanket ladder for about a year and I haven't found one in a price range I was comfy with. Now I can make it for her, thanks so much.

Hey Matt! Greetings from St. Louis. Thanks for doing this video and taking the time to make it. I showed my wife your video and she loves ❤ this thing. She's got 3 people in mind from work to try to sell this to. I got your free plans from your site. I've got a workbench ordered and waiting to be delivered, then order the lumber. This will be my first project. I hope to start it this weekend. Thanks again my friend!

Some smaller wood working projects that I've been working on are some paper towel holders, and toilet paper holders.
How I have been making them is, I cut "biscuits" out of some 6" diameter walnut logs I have. Cut the biscuits about 1" thick. I found that just using a hand saw to cut the biscuits works best( for me, you can use a reciprocating saw if you like, just be safe) Any sort of logs will do. Walnut, Oak, Cedar, or what ever you have access to will work.
Then drill a hole in the center of the biscuits using a "forester bit" or a 1" "hole saw" will work. You can remove the bark if you want or leave it on for a more rustic look.
Sanding the "wood biscuits" is a little difficult, because its "end grain"....
I had a bunch of handles from mops, and brooms I cut at 14" to leave some room to round off one end, and the opposite end, I "spliced" so I could put a wedge in the bottom. Sand smooth once you have them cut.
You may have to "taper" one end to fit in the hole you drilled in the "biscuits"
Assembly should be pretty easy to figure out....but if not I will explain the best I can with out any confusion.
Set wood biscuit flat on work bench, then insert the handle you cut off, into the hole in the biscuit.
It should be snug enough to hold without wood glue. If not, you can use some wood glue, and or a wedge to hold into place.
I wish I could post pictures to show how simple they are to make.
Hopefully these could be some small projects to sell to help fund bigger projects!!!????
Either way, have fun, be safe, and I hope everyone is successful with their wood working projects!!!

Since you're relying on irregularities of the wood surface to make the dark paint show through the white paint, wouldn't it have been better to skip the preliminary sanding so there would be more "high spots" to show through after the final sanding?

Quick question... what am I doing wrong? I’m using pocket holes with wood glue but seems like they don’t stay too well. I end up having to clamp everything anyways for the wood glue.
Is it because I’m using hardwood pockethole screws instead of softwood?
Also, the screws keep going through the material. Using 2 1/2 screws for for 2x4 which is the recommended screw. Don’t know what I’m doing wrong and don’t have confidence in the pocket hole screws to hold my project together. I have more confidence in the glue.

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  5 лет назад +1

I sometimes set the collar on the drill bit a little shallower to prevent them from popping through. You could also use 2" screws. They should hold so it may be that you are not using the correct screw or depth. They should hold very solid. If done correctly, the pocket hole joinery should be very stable. I've built tons of projects with them. Try using the different depths on your drill bit stop to see what works best.
