There’s a lot of animosity between England and Scotland, but as an Englishman I’ll say this - you can keep your gas, your whiskey, your free prescriptions and free university fees. This is the greatest thing to EVER come out of Scotland, and I’ll fight to the death to keep Scotland in the UK so that I can keep some tenuous link to being part of this song. Best song ever written. EVER.
I feel so lucky and privileged to say ive been around and following Deacon Blue since the 80's. Amazing band live. Loaded fore is my favourite. Dignity is an absolute timeless classic. All ages know it.❤️
Reminds me of my grandad, he was a miner. Retired and got a boat to go with his car and caravan. He had a short retirement but he made it count. 💕He's a miss xx
Reminds me of my grandad. A miner. Didn't have a pot to piss in. Couldn't save. And died before retirement unable to do anything he had hoped for. This song is capitalist propaganda. It's everything the boss class wants the workers to believe. The carrot on the end of the stick.
This is describing me to a tee and seeing them sing this live in Cardiff made me realise my life really isn’t that bad! My music was/is the 80’s and what a time to be alive and a teenager
I like Deacon Blue. They've just done their thing win, lose or draw. Not tried to conquer the world, no theatrics through the years and just a good band to listen to.
Late 80's, 19 years of age, with awesome friends, united by hardship and destiny, singing our heads off feeling like champions. Thank you with all my heart.❤
This band are awesome....been a fan since they started and never looked back seen them loads of times ...great memories with my Walkman riding on my bike round Cornwall awesome💙💙💙
There is nothing wrong with collecting litter from the gutter. It’s an honest job. The chap in the town I live In who does it is hard working, polite and always doing it. I wish everyone knew what hard work was like he does.
@declansullivan6947 I totally agree.Deacon Blue are basically a band fronted by a duo..She is such an integral part of their sound, that calling her a backing singer is doing the whole band a misjustice
Absolutely fantastic for every working class person in every scheme in Scotland this song tells you there’s always hope but never forget where you came from best lyrics I’ve ever heard 👏👏👏👏👏👏
It is a capitalist propaganda song. It tells you that you must work hard for the promise of a decent retirement - which hardly anyone ever experiences. While the workers dream of having a little yacht in 40 years time, the bosses are crusing the world in superyachts in the here and now. It's carrot and stick. Everyone in my family worked hard and either died before retirement or didn't have a pot to pee by the time they retired. It's a nice fairytale the bosses sell to the workers to keep their noses to the grindstone.
Live for most of us is hard for some very hard if not impossible,if you get to the end and can leave with a smile on your face you have succeeded and the won the game of life. 👍♥️
Completely takes me back. Reminds me of a train journey from Uni in Newcastle-upon-Tyne to my (then) girlfriend in Carlisle where a bunch of girls invaded my carriage convinced I was you in my dungarees. I enjoyed myself.
There's a man out here, walks up our street, He's been working for The Council..Has Been 20 years. And he takes no shit off nobody,, An litter off the gutter He puts it in his bag, And never seems to mutter. And he wraps his lunch in a Sunblest Bag,.. And the children call him Bogey . The children didn't call him "Bogey", that's the PC version. "The children call him Jesus" is the originally correct version. BTW, I've been doing the job 18 years, its our theme song just for the original first verse.
Kept me going when I had to work.. Every hour I could with some awful people no respect just a joke but now I own my own life my house my car and I get to share it with my beautiful wife....
I'm so hoping to come see you with my 2 sons in Liverpool this summer. I've never had the chance until now, Deacon Blue was always the theme in our house in the 80s an beyond. I just never got chance to see you. Maybe this Yr 🙏
Saw them whilst serving in the Royal Air Force over 30 years ago. (4th May 1994 Cardiff Ice Rink). I Didn't plan to go, was just out on the lash in Cardiff that day. A load of friends who had tickets, shouting from a local pub caught my attention and carried me off to a brilliant last minute concert. Setlist that night: 1. Your Town 2. Peace & Jobs & Freedom 3. Hang Your Head 4. Cut Lip 5. Your Swaying Arms 6. The Day That Jackie Jumped the Jail 7. Will We Be Lovers 8. Last Night I Dreamed of Henry Thomas 9. Wages Day 10. Dignity 11. Loaded 12. Fellow Hoodlums 13. The Very Thing 14. Fall So Freely Down 15. Raintown 16. Only Tender Love 17. Bethlehem's Gate 18. Twist and Shout 19. Better the Devil You Know (Kylie Minoque cover) 20. Fergus Sings the Blues. Long may they continue. Richard, York.
Seen this show in the Echo arena Liverpool with my daughter and her fella. He’d never really heard a lot of what they’d recorded. But was blown away with there performance. So much so he lost his phone in the excitement . He had to go back to the venue ,whilst we went back to the car. Most leaving the venue were families all singing mr blue sky. A great night.

56 years old and I'm living on a boat.
This song makes me cry with drunken happiness...especially when the piano sings. 🙂
