    this video is important. I am social worker in training and constantly plagued with similar concerns for difficult client interactions. Good to see these reflected and to get some perspectives/approaches. Thx :)

    I'm in a forensic counseling class and I wanted clarity on what a disarming question is.

      Hey Diedre, sorry for the terribly long delay. I'm not exactly sure of the term "disarming question," but if you look to the MI literature you'll see that you want to join with clients and not confront, if at all possible. For instance, if I'm working with someone who substance issues and they indicate that it is not a problem, I may say, "From what you're saying, your substance use seems to be bothering other people, but you feel you are OK?" Now, what I hope happens is that client sees that I'm not there to contradict or lecture, but I am truly wanting to know their experience. This way I'm more likely to build a relationship which keeps them in counseling to where we can make progress. Does that make sense?

      I don't have a transcript but have tried to improve audio with more recent videos. Can you put captions CC on that video?
