Basic Skills of a Counselor

We can’t change people. However, we can be helpful in encouraging our clients to move towards change. It would appear that clients are more likely to achieve their goals when there is a healthy and trusting relationship that exists between the client and their therapist. So, naturally, the way in which the counselor engages the client can be a very effective tool in the helping relationship.

Basic counseling skills.
1.Listening with attending
verbalization, lean forward, have a patient, observing, remember what he says
2.empathy
listen and recall, perception check, choose the word that client has used
3.geneuineness
be comfortable
4.unconditional positive regard
5.concreteness
to avoid getting off topic, check the perception
6, open questions
7.counselor self-discloser
safe to avoid
8.interpretation
to compartmentalize by patients self
9.Removing Obstacles to change
Give facts, data, find helpful alternatives

Hi Destiny, I bet you will be a great counselor! These skills come in handy, so keep practicing. I also offer the following advice: 1) Remember that you need friends, not clients. 2) When a friend says something like "you are the only one who..." it's a sign that things may get too intense. Seek out adult help if you are worried about a friend.
3) We all need support sometimes. Make sure that you have people who help you too.
