  • Accessing and reading your own child welfare records can play an important role for people in care and care leavers. Child welfare records can often provide answers, create chronology and help people develop a stronger sense of identity.
In this film, Line and Peer, talks about their experiences in accesing, reading and processing the contents of their child welfare records. The film is part of the project ”The right to your own history” which is a collaboration between The Danish Welfare Museum (Danmarks Forsorgsmuseum), University College Copenhagen (Københavns Professionshøjskole), The Danish National Archives (Rigsarkivet) and TABUKA - The Association of Children placed in care and care-leavers.
”The right to your own history” is financially supported through the Finance Act reserve in the fields of social, health and labor, as well as the Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansen Foundation and the Augustinus Foundation.

This is a fantastic film. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The importance of the care files of children raised in the child care system cannot be stressed enough. This film captures that importance. It also reveals the different layers of meaning that the files and our reading of them contain. The fact that the film is entirely narrated by two care leavers who have accessed their files makes it particularly powerful. The Danish Welfare Museum and everyone involved should be very proud of having produced this film. The issue of care leavers accessing their care files is global. Although this film is about Danish care leavers, it will be interest and value to care leavers and many others all over the world.

Very sensitive and informative program. We will pass it onto survivors of the Islington child abuse scandal in London and to social services managers who tell us we dont need to get survivor’s files and to the council that has lost or destroyed so many files so that evidence is now hidden & abusers go free. Thankyou for this inspiring film. @theIslingtonSN
