New Layout Build - Making a start on the branch line scenery

- After months of going through ideas on what to do with this area I've now made a start on the first bit of scenery. This part of the layout has little room for industry or buildings due to the track layout so I've started building a more rural section. Behind the mainlines I'll be adding low relief buildings in future to add some variation to the scene. I've got a long way to go with this area but it's great to have another section of bare baseboard covered with scenery.
Link to Luke's video regarding the trees. I'd always wanted to have a go with seafoam trees and found his tutorial very useful. I've been watching Luke for years and many of the techniques used in this video are inspired from Luke's work. Well worth a watch...

Thanks so much for 60k subs, I can’t believe it! Who’d have thought a bloke building a model railway would be of interest to so many. Made my day, thanks guys!!
Awesome work mate. Keep it up :-)
well if you keep producing videos like this then you will get more and more subs :)
I subscribed to your channel to remind me of when I was super interested in this sort of thing. I used to be subscribed to your channel many years ago but unsubscribed until recently. Good job!
EverardJunction your easy and clear to listen to that’s why well deserved 👌
Well deserved. Great content, excellent modelling, great video production and what always comes over as an effortless manner in presenting/narrating.
Hey Richard, thanks for mentioning me 😃 love how the scene is coming together! I can’t wait to see more updates, especially now that most of us are trapped indoors. Keep up the awesome job 😉 p.s. your static grass looks fantastic!
A rare Luke Towan comment has appeared! I suppose you need something to watch while you model? New video soon, perhaps?
Praise indeed! Thanks very much, I find it hard to find the right balance for grass. I'm getting better with each attempt and its good fun. Look forward to your next project, the high rise was very inspiring. Cheers
Stunning. Truly stunning.
@@EverardJunction you're doing a great job. Can't wait for the farm building. I like Luke's videos also. Both have a narration style I enjoy listening to.
@@EverardJunction Who doesn't?
The realism you create is both fascinating and entertaining. I compliment you on vision.
Richard I`m almost lost for words to describe what you have just done in this video, so I will just say brilliant. Cheers Greg
Large trees look really good on the layout 👍🏻👍🏻😁
That tracking shot over the new section of trees while the HST ran on the main line and a DMU on the branch line looked amazing! It's really starting to come together!!
You are a true artist when it comes to model railways and it is always the first place to come if you want to find out how it should be done
Brilliant
Looks blooming marvellous! :) And as to your comments about your 60k subscribers... I think, what makes yours stand out amongst many channels is, to me, the quality of the work, the explanations you give and that you don't rush. You actually show us what you are doing, instead of just "I am going to do this" and then suddenly, its done. I find it fascinating to watch. Thank you very much for posting it all.
Just love your work. Don't cut your self short I think you are right there with Luke. What's better about you is that you do it over a large area and you truly are one of my favorites.
It's great to watch you at work on your layout. Even though made a year or so ago they are very informative. Thanks Richard!!
Richard,
Thanks so much for this video. It is inspirational. In this lockdown I am moving on with my own layout (long gestation period) and I am now onto the scenery i have two corner areas to fill with country scenery and I will be shamelessly copying your methods as I think they are so effective.
Thanks also for the link to Luke’s video's. His tree videos are so useful.
Regards,
Colin.
Nice one Richard, what a fantastic scene, definitely food for thought for future scenic work. Sometimes you think that seafoam trees won't cut it, but as you and Luke have shown, with a little work they can look great. WWS are local to me and I've often seen Martin doing the layering effect for static grass with brilliant results. Stay safe and well buddy, regards Bobby 'T'.
Hi Richard. An absolute joy to watch a superbly presented video of such quality. Mind blown!!!! Thanks for sharing. Stay safe. Cheers, Bob
The scenery looks so real and natural, great job.
Loving the green rural area, it gives an extra look of life to the layout 🙂
Thanks, I've not had anything rural on the layout so far. Plan is to have the urban station side blend to the more rural side. Give the effect of the trains actually going somewhere.
@@EverardJunction I haven't got much room for scenics full stop, but will manage a small corner of grass with animals on, and hope I can manage a larger layout in a few years 🙂
This is the best hobby in the world!
Wow! Everard Junction Mk1 was impressive. This a whole new level. Fantastic work. This will be regular return viewing for me. Especially when I get to the scenery work on my own layout.
Thanks. Very inspirational.
Bob
That section looks amazing. The railcar leaning though the curves amongst the trees is an awesome sight.
What a fantastic piece of work and rather inspiring in these less than happy times
Absolutely love watching you do any scenery work. So relaxing and also lots to be learned. The whole area is looking really good. Love how your scenery skills have developed over time and it shows how much skill you have now. Outstanding work. Clint
The branch is looking amazing! - the trees and all the static grass just make it so realistic, as if you were there!
Will never cease to amaze me, how bringing all the layering techniques with a little restrained application can produce such a brilliant result which isn't even completely finished yet. Another well presented episode Richard, hard work is paying dividends and the intro was the icing.
It has to be said that static grass, poly fiber and see moss have enabled enormous improvement in our scenery building. I am glad your layout is developing so well - to your satisfaction, and ours.
Glad to see you are still keeping yourself busy during the lockdown. Stay healthy and stay happy Richard.
You went from a few bits of wood with track on them to a realistic countryside scene in the space of one video. Awesome.
Scrapping the idea to have a small derelict depot in favor of going fully rural really was the right choice. Makes the layout appear larger while providing countless photogenic opportunities. Once again, less is more and you did a great job. In itself, this single track branchline tells a story. Looking forward to see the bridge and overpass done!
Really nice how-to video, very clear take-aways on what to do and what to use, the grass and other scenery look really realistic; also love this period of British railways.
Well done, looking great, it looks just like a place we used to hang about when we were kids, thanks for reawakening the memories. Everybody Take Care, we will soon get back to normality, even though, it's great to have so much time to spend on our layouts. Regards Mac
Afternoon Richard and hope you and your family are keeping safe and well? A master class and in doing scenery on a model railway or any modelling project as a matter of fact 😄 Really enjoyed this as it was so relaxing cheers steve 😎
Yeeeeah!, a farm! 😆 opening scene was a good one. You have been busy!
A master class in landscaping!
Scenery Natural 👌
Great job Richard and nice Trains running 👍
I’m not a modeller but the skill and attention to detail you have plus your personality keep me hooked on your vids!
Hey just finished watching this playlist and just had to say thanks for all the tips and tricks you show, I am a total noob and your videos are easy to understand and the step by step builds are a great help, so thank you
Looking superb, Richard and thanks for sharing. Really like the tip about practice on a small diorama.
Looks incredible, what a transformation. If you like water features you could have a lake were the farmhouse would be with a waterfall running down into it.
Superb video again Richard, just what we need in these bizarre times' ...watching your fabulously detailed layout come to life at every stage' thank you for sharing keep safe.
Cannot wait for the 3rd rail to go down on the branch line and see some EMU's pass along that curve through the underpass
Some of the most realistic scenery I’ve ever seen. Excellent job.
Richard, Lovely work. I model Australian, NSW early 1980's and love watching your progress.
One of the best areas in the layout, great work Richard.
Thanks for this, it was very enjoyable. You’re smashing out the videos at the moment, and considering I’m building my own layout at the moment, your ideas and attention to detail is a great help to my build, thank you. I can’t believe the pace your setting at the moment, you’re absolutely smashing it!
Cheers, I've made a lot of progress in the past few weeks!
Richard ....just incredible.... ! So inspiring ...thanks
And here I was thinking that you couldn't get any better than the original Everard Junction... But Everard Junction 2.0 is just on another level! Fantastic detail and scenery in every section.
Good day Richard. I started watching your videos quite a long time ago, before the start of the New Layout. And I have watched "All" of your videos. I must say that I have always been very impressed with your attention and effort to the weathering and scenic detail that you put into your layout. It seems to be getting better as time goes on. I can only imagine what things will look like when you finish the layout. If that day ever comes. Please keep the videos coming. I find them very informative and entertaining. Stay safe and healthy. Thomas.
Richard, thanks for another educational and enjoyable video. You've earned the 60k subscribers through your excellent work over the years. Stay safe...Harold
Stunning.... although I just started building my N gauge layout baseboards I have been following your channel for over a year and you keep us entertained
Superb results as ever Richard, those sea foam trees really are the business. I hope you titled the introductory video 'Sod's Law!'.
Hi, Richard.
Today (10 may 2020), it's been exactly 10 years since you founded the Everard Junction channel.
Congratulations.
It's great.
Greetings
Richard thanks so much for posting, amazing progress made, love the look you have created. Given me some ideas on improving my scenery especially my static grass.
Especially like the shot looking through the trees at the passing rail car. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing the next scenery update. Great work
been waiting for you mate . who needs tv when we have you and martin zero . missus loves it too , god bless from wigan
Cheers mate, took a while for this one. 3 days waiting for that plaster to dry!
Once again Richard, looking fantastic. It’s wonderful to see the fruits of your labour all coming together. Thanks for the upload for a cold NZ South Island night to watch by the fire 👍🏼
Brilliant techniques, awesome detail, not surprised in the slightest that you have reached 60k👍
I was expecting this to say ‘created 4 years ago’ or something... nope, 3 mins ago!!! That’s the soonest I’ve ever watched a video
Really cool seeing this much "undeveloped" area on the layout. I'd never really thought about it before but modelers seem to tend to cram buildings and industrial sites into every square inch of their layouts and this is a nice change of pace.
That's a big issue in the hobby. People cram in all sorts of stuff that just wouldn't happen. Scaled up my layout is only half a mile long so its important to take things into context and avoid a contrived appearance. Cheers, glad you enjoyed it.
This was the most dramatic transformation so far, I feel!
Great job, Richard with the static grass on the embankment area.
Beautiful, Richard, thank-you! The shot through the trees at about 42minutes is to die for, in that ove-worked, odd phrase.
I really appreciate your referencing Luke Towan's work: a real example of co-learning. Collegiality at its best!
Btw, following Mike and Douglas' comments at Budget Model Railways, I've bought two books by John H Ahern on Senic Modelling and Miniature Buildings: both *excellent*: old now but so beautiful.
Very best wishes and, again, thanks,
John
I have watched the video of you relaying the branch line and now this one it looks brilliant don’t know how you do it great videos
Hi there. Thanks so much for this tutorial. It Has given me an insight for my next layout on how to do this sort of scene and usage of static grass and all the other elements that go into getting the results as shown. I must see again out to apply static grass and do some test like you say. The trees are splended and have watched likes tutorial too, very interesting. I've followed you for years and a your a true insperation. A real person to go to for tips and "how to". Look forward to seeing the layout grow more. Take care.
Reagrds Matt
Very well done Richard, lovely work and the methods presented professionally. I think this is the best part of building the railway, it's relaxing and brings it all to life. Thanks for sharing, Jim :)
Thanks Jim, I always enjoy this part of the process. Challenging to do but rewarding when it goes to plan, cheers.
This tutorial is outstanding. I have recently been lured back into this infernal hobby, and your work is inspired and inspiring. Thank you.
Hey Richard, really interesting to see the landscape develop further. Have you ever considered putting in some line side archaeology? It would be great to see a WWII era pillbox overlooking the track by the road bridge and some concrete dragons teeth nestling in the grass by the line where it emerges from under the road?
Another excellent video Richard well done on the 60K subs also thanks I'm now going to rip up all my static grass and start again Andy
hey Richard your great model railway so far has inspired me to make my own so thank you
Glad you thought of the branch line being twin track in the past.
Great video and the layout is looking Awesome 👍🏻👍🏻 Hope there is more videos to come soon.
Your videos are always amazing, you make it look so life like. BRILLIANT
congratulations Richard, nice to mention Luke also, I’m sure he tunes into your channel like all of us
I've been watching Luke for years. His work is always amazing, cheers
Looks bloody amazing. Great watching trains run through the scene, cant wait for more
Looks great. I am also following Luke Towan's work. Lucky for me, I live in his city, so can access most of what he uses to build scenery.
Fantastic detail, I have been watching for at least 3 years and can’t believe how realistic your scenes are. What a great tutorial. You make it look so effortless. Thanks.
I remember when you first put your backscene in and talked about how you envisioned the lay layout to look. Country side, moving slowly into a built up area.. when you dropped those sidings in and the coach shed I did think at the time you've lost that rural area.
That change really has made it so much better.
Layering up all those materials really does work.
I'm on my South end scenics right now. Nothing but embankments and a river flowing through the middle. The most enjoyable part of modelling I find.
Same here, really enjoy the progress. The areas we model were often long embankments or cuttings with trees and bushes so I felt it important to include that somewhere. Long way to go, but pleased with it so far.
@@EverardJunction absolutely. Noticed a few people mention the branch line not being wide enough to represent a double track. Food for thought and something alot over look on the GWR mainline is every thing is cut wider to fit broad gauge lines many moons ago. Without spending time looking it up I wonder if any branch lines would of been broad gauge if they were built early enough?
Always enjoy watching your videos and the work you do
Thank you very much for your videos, they're tempting me to actually get back into railway modelling and are hugely entertaining. I really love and respect your modelling skills. Please keep them coming!
Great video John. Hope all is well with you and Alice. Give her my love X
Great training for my future railway. Thank you Richard for sharing your skills with us regards Ian Brunssum NLD.
Brilliant Richard just what the Dr. Ordered on a wet lockdown day.
Looking rather fine, excellent guide on how to scenery.
Enjoyed the steam intro too!
Cheers
Ade
Thank you for allowing us into your home.
Great update Richard 👍 you done a really good job. Looking forward to seeing what you do next😉 take care and stay safe kind regards Gary leicestertmd 👍
wow this has come along very nicely! glad i stopped by to check out the update
Richard. You aced this! Really stunning & so captures reality, with the shots through the trees & foliage etc. Excellent detail. Well done. Need to get you a larger cap for all those feathers! ;-) haha. Thank you for sharing these videos. Stay safe, and looking forward to future videos. Cheers Iain
Thanks Iain. I must admit I was quite impressed by the end result! I always find it quite challenging to get right. Easy to overdo it as I've done in the past. Cheers
I love a good branch line on a layout with mainlines, I did mine the same. Adds so much more interest in the operational side!
That intro is absolutely superb, thanks for making me laugh a bit!! I certainly remember once going to Tamworth to see 6233 Duchess of Sutherland, and got double disappointment because around the corner came a replacement class 47, which was then bowled by a Pendolino!! Great vid as always and thanks for publishing
Sad times! We've all been there at some point haha, cheers.
Congrats on 60K- well earned, even in your modesty. Everybody else has already said how brilliant and fantastic! So, I will just say "splendiferous" and mosey on my way to another vidi. Cheers!
Right up my street.
Love this type of scenic work. 👍🏻
Haha! Love the little guy at the start missing the steam train!
Scenic mastery, without doubt. Love your work. The last shot looked so real. Look forward to even more.
All the best Peter
Thank-you for making time to share your talent and experience.
Nicely done Richard. The new section looks fantastic. I’ve learned a great deal by watching your very instructional videos and applied many of those techniques on my own layout. Thank you.
Looks fantastic, the layering and variety ready makes it work to look natural.
If I was being nit picky, the reedy grass at the edge of the drainage ditch looks a little manicured in top length.
Perhaps there is a way to gather them together as a clump from similar but random lengths to soften the look.
I love the way you have done the static grass that was the mistake I made applying glue like a carpet over the embankment
Brilliant job!! Adds another dimension to the layout. Really brings it to life, looking forward to further updates
Well no other words but Simply Stunning! I've followed your channel for many years and you never disappoint! I look forward to seeing how you progress! Thank you for sharing with us 👍
Looking very good Richard, certainly gives a lot more interest to the layout having that branch line.
Richard your layout is going from strength to strength mate, can it get any better. I only hope my scenery looks half as good as yours when I get started.
Regards Chris
Wow! Great work, looks so realistic. A well made video with good commentary. Thanks.
Looks amazing! Why someone didn't like the video is beyond me.....
Your work is good. A suggestion: Before going in to the 'fast-forwad' mode of the routine stuff, could you leave the first few 10 or so seconds in 'real time' so we can actually grasp what you are doing.
Richard, I’ve watched your channel for a long time and you’ve encouraged me to pull the pin and begin modelling. Your channel is brilliant 👍
