  • Let's learn how to grow lavender plants from cuttings. Propagating lavender plants is so easy from softwood cuttings, especially if you root them in sand. You'll usually see roots within a month and you can take many cuttings off of one plant so your lavender stock will multiply exponentially! The big bonus is that this plant attracts hummingbirds to your garden!

    I do this with almost every type of plant. It works almost always and many times I don't even use rooting hormone. Amazing how many beautiful plants you can own this way. And watching them grow gives you so much love and satisfaction.

    Hi Mike, this is exactly how i do my lavender cuttings , apart from i don't use a cloche/ bottle.
    I live in the uk & sadly we don't have any hummingbirds. They've always fascinated me & anyone who grows plants that feed them or insects/ bees, is alright in my books & doing what we were put on this planet to do. It's lovely that you are spreading the word & showing people how to help beautiful birds & insects.
    In the uk we have something called the "hummingbird moth" (look it up, u'll be amazed), It's a moth which looks like it has hummingbird attributes ; it has the fast vibrating wings & the long proboscis (inplace of a beak) & it feeds on the flowers in a similar fashion.
    So currently i'm substituting the moth for the real bird, but i feel very priveledged to have something as lovely that visits the " nectar bar" in my garden.
    Anyway, keep up the good work & thanks for a great video.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Год назад +1

      I recently heard from another viewer that there are no hummingbirds in the UK. I never knew this before and that's very interesting to me since they are so common around here. I believe they originate in South America and travel up this way every summer, but there is a variety that stays all winter. It's very curious to me that so many plants and animals have traversed the waters and multiplied throughout the world but the hummingbirds haven't been introduced there yet.

      @@MikeKincaid79 thanku for your reply, I'm living in hope that warmer temperatures might bring hummingbirds to our shores one day !( well, there has to be an upside, right? ), in the meantime I've provided a link for you to see the " hummingbird hawk moth" that visits us instead in the uk.

    I made the cobbler with my son Kieran, huge success! Found a measuring jug with 'cups' on it and used 4ozs of butter for the cube/stick. Only had pineapple rings in the cupboard but tasted great! Kieran couldn't wait to cool it and cut a piece straight away, just like when a kid!
    He poured double cream over it but would go well with English Custard or ice cream Certainly not a crumble 😂 but everyone enjoyed it so definitely will make again, thank you for passing on the recipe and for all your smashing videos ❤💐

    Fun video, Mike! Hummingbirds are so beautiful and interesting. I cant remember the name of the plants I have, but the hummingbirds LOVE them. They will have hummingbirds all over them, just like bees do plants! I have ones that have baby blue, deep blue, red, pink, white and lavender flowers. The leaves are green with white spots or splotches, some having long slender leaves and some having wider leaves. They're all beautiful, thats why I have all colors. I have always heard a nickname for them is a boy and girl plant, having blue and pink flowers on the same plant. If you are interested Mike, I will set you up!

      Yes, you can use the aquarium sand as long as it drains quickly and doesn't hold a lot of water. You don't need anything else, no fish waste water, just clean water. They'll root without hormone but the success rate will be a little higher with the hormone.

I've only tried fuchsias twice now, but even microphylla rooted without heat, late Summer and over wintered underneath sime forest-like shade outside, no problem. I like them best as a hedge. As for the birds, nothing compares to the hummingbird, so we have a Eurasian mixture of fairly unexotic, but welcome birds, and the odd eagle outside the villages. Next priority is to build another pond here, for the great frogs. More than half of my wife's outdoor veg has been eaten by slugs. Cheers.

    Hi Mike, I love lavender and live your family ! I’m going to try propagating lavender. I’ll let you know how they turn out come spring.
    May I ask a question about Thompson Green grapes? I bought a one year old Grapevine this past spring, and planted it and fertilized it. I’ve been fertilizing it about once a month and giving it a little bit of water because it has been so terribly hot here in California. My leaves, and the edges are turning brown. I wish I could put a photo in my comment here So you could see it. Almost all the leaves on the plant have brown edges. I don’t see any holes on the leaves. There are no signs of any blossoms either. i thought in the 2nd year, which this would be, I would get some blossoms and tiny grapes (I know you don’t eat those grapes yet, just prune and toss). I have not seen any blossoms at all this past summer. I want to prune for canes to grow on the top of our fence. Right now the plant it’s only about 3 foot tall, and doesn’t reach the top of our fence. I prune in the winter time correct? Any help you can give me Mike I will appreciate it. It’s planted in full sun, in fact with California temperatures this last summer I’ve had to have a shade cloth over it because it was 110. Thank you for any help!
    Backyard gardener, Marlyn

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 года назад +1

      Yes, winter is a good time to prune them. The brown edged leaves sound like you may be over-fertilizing with too much nitrogen. My rhododendrons get the same leaves when I give too much fertilizer. Grapes do well with little fertilizer. I'd just try mulching around them with a good organic material, water well through the summer, and just let them be.

    • @marezeedo
      @marezeedo 4 года назад

      Mike Kincaid hello again, Thankyou so much for responding. One more quick question, which I’m sure you are asked a lot, but what exactly do you mean by keep the grapevine watered well? The ground looks terribly dry to me and that’s when I water it a little. We don’t get rain, so the only moisture would come from my watering. I look at all the vineyards and I don’t see any of The grapevines in standing water, can they survive these hot California summers without water? Thank you again for your consideration Mike!

    Thanks for this, Mike. My lavender self-seeds pretty easily, but my two original plants have given up the ghost, so I'm going to try rooting them next year! I saved seeds one year, but that was just too much work. I'm just about ready to root some petunias for next year as well as New Guinea impatiens. I haven't bought coleus for a couple of years, but might have to do so next year because I'm getting a bit tired of the varieties I've been rooting, LOL. I really love the $$ that are saved by all my propagation efforts--perhaps someday I can even make some! BTW, my propagation box seems to be working. I've lost about a dozen cuttings, but considering all the 90 degree days we've had this summer, that's not too bad. Quick question: since I don't have any bottom heat on the box, is there anything I can do this winter to keep things warmer? A friend suggested blankets during the night...does that sound crazy? (Zone 5b, southeastern Wisconsin) B.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 года назад

      You can wrap blankets or insulation around the frame but it will just keep the frost off, the frame will still freeze unless you have a source of heat.

    • @Padraigp
      @Padraigp Год назад

      You can do this bloody amazing thing where you make a square of bales of straw and in the middle you fill it with compost clippings leaves etc and as the compost starts to heat up it keeps things warm. Usually you do this inside a green house but you can also do it outside ..some people ive seen put nitrogen fertilizer on which helps heat it up and it has to be like a a decent size lump of compost. Not sure but maybe 3 feet by three feet minimum. And then you can put things like seedlings on top of the warm area ...or built a wwe shelter around it like a small polytunnel cloche ...just cos it costs less and doesnt need electricity i love this idea. I haven't tried it myself and ill probably mess it up lol!
