Thanks for keeping their legacy alive. I’ve been a fan of Mississippi Fred (McDowell) forever and a few yrs ago learned about RL Burnside due to the remixes of “Someday Baby” and “It’s Bad You Know”. Then watched the Fat Possum Doc just last night on all these guys (probably why the data gods magically populated my RUclips with your channel today). I’m a trained classical/flamenco player and the rhythm techniques these guys employ are not entirely unlike flamenco rhumbas I practice. Music unites cultures it seems. The gypsy flamenco and American black country blues legacy’s seem to have come from the same heart since both cultures were ostracized, faced crushing oppression and found and expressed joy in their music. My flamenco teacher, the great Rene Heredia, told me the way flamenco songs were taught was as if the songs were a story that was passed along and didn’t follow established music theory- much like the blues.
This is a highly valuable video, thank you again! I'm struggling with this style of playing but I love and I'm going to keep working on it. I think without your lessons I probably wouldn't even try 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi. Thanks for the reply on my comment. I started taking weekly Zoom lessons with Heath about 8 months ago. The very first lesson with Heath made all the difference moving forward. I’ve been learning guitar for 4 years starting at age 58. Everyone is different but consistent daily practice opened the door for me. I found in the beginning just 5 minutes in the morning and some time in the evening maybe an hour kept the fire 🔥 going. Every day possible a little bit of practice. The last 2 years though much more daily practice for me because I enjoy it. I’m glad I found a rewarding endeavour… All the best.
Heath’s build method works for all his lessons. I tended to skip the build part to my detriment as it took longer to learn by skipping it. So build with consistency and metronome will get you where you need to go. I rushed too much…get in that hypnotic groove and ride it 👍
Yeah for sure. I'm just doing the basic form and I'm going to do just that until it's like second nature, a couple hours of steady thumping with the metronome or however long it takes. Then I'll add the next element and I know that'll take me a couple weeks to really get down. But the discipline and patience is what I need. I think it's what most of us need.
Great lesson! One thing I’m having trouble catching is which fingers you’re using for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string at 1:30 basic groove. You say “Index,” but I’m assuming you’re using several fingers like index, middle, and ring to pluck all three at once? Thanks for any feedback. I’m digging your content.

Why am i struggling with this technique so much. Fr, I been practicing 1-3 hours a day for 2 weeks n I'm still messing it all up. Usually i dont have this much of n issue picking up new things but somehow this ones beyond me.
Lol 😂I hear you . Seriously trying to hard maybe ? Like syncing the hands for stops and plucking .. wrist loose! Relax… let it come .. it’ll come . When it does … it was worth it!
I can NOT get this motion down. You somehow play so gentle but with force. That economy of motions is nuts man. Thinking when I get back to working imma have to pay fer yer lessons.
I love the obvious joy in your face when you play this stuff . Yeah !
