Film industry animal trainer and Vital Ground founder Doug Seus trains grizzly bear Honey Bump. This special video was shot by Vital Ground supporter Derek Reich of Zooprax Productions.
The amazing thing about the bears that Doug and his wife have raised is that they really seem to understand that they have to be a little gentler with Doug than with the other bears. I don't think they truly know their own strength, but they definitely seem to understand that they have to take it easier on the humans than on each other. And when Doug says "EASY", they ease off immediately.
Cogent speculation on their strength. I am doing a comparative study of mechanical advantage of carnivore/omnivore forelimbs. The calculations hold true for all their muscles. The bear's mechanical advantage due to their insertion points alone is so mind boggling, it belies all previous estimates of a bear's strength compared to a man's. That is, of course, before other factors are taken into consideration. In pound for pound muscular size, type of muscle fiber, and percentage of total muscle mass recruited in a single movement, the gap is even wider, not just between them and us, but anything of comparable size. Bears are monstrously strong, especially brown bears.
@@Nagy50Magyar Im obsessed by bears, study them for years.Very interesting what you said.Black bears can are extremely strong too,but they cant compare to Brown bears and Brown grizzlies.Polar bear in the only 100% carnevor and they eat only meat
@@boxingscience8849 Suggest describing the polar bear as an "obligate carnivore," rather than a "100% carnivore," because they do eat trace amounts of seaweed, and bits of a few other kinds of vegetative matter. As a matter of fact, the polar bear is nearly an obligate blubber eater. On ordinary meat, they develop severe nutritional deficiencies, which would eventually kill them. Yes, brown bears -grizzlies are brown bears; there is only one brown bear species- are indeed stronger than black bears, even pound for pound. The hump over their shoulders is a huge bundle of scapular muscles that give them the strongest forelegs of any terrestrial predator.
i like the fact that she knows she's so big but despite all of that shes trying to show him love , as Bernard Russel once said Love is wise hatred is foolish
I absolutely LOVE DOUG SEUS!! What he did w/Bart the bear was UNPRECIDENTED!! I LOVE THIS MAN!!! You want to make your heart & soul smile?? Watch this!! Also don't forget to watch I believe it's called "on vital ground". AWESOME!!
To the bear, its all play. Positive reinforcement and Doug will never put an animal in danger or do something they just don't want to do. They all have good and bad days and are very very smart. Furthermore they are his family. They are his kids. What's interesting is how, through many years of trial and error, he knows what works and what doesn't yet he still learns because each animal is different. I've seen him train his bears and actually use some of his methods in some fashion with my dogs. Especially the positive reinforcement and its pretty successful. Animals want to play! So let them! :) (Safely of course)
Well, to be honest Doug got very firm with Bart even having a short club to use if necessary and using profanity during draining and filming for The Bear. But he does love all the bears he works with. A while ago tonight I saw the Making of Grizzly(1976)movie short and the trainer of that bear admitted that none of the trainers touched the bear and he never touched them. That was very sad.
When I need a break from politics, I come here most times. I just LOVE Doug & Lynn Sues & what they've done for these bears & what they've given US. Truly wonderful, loving people. IT'S ALWAYS PURE LOVE for these bears & what they get back is 10 fold!! NONE of them have any idea of how HUGE they are. Bart, Lil Bart or Honey Bump. Makes my soul smile.
What Doug accomplished with Bart and his siblings is truly amazing. He built dog like relationships with grizzly bears. Something that was “known” to be impossible prior. I’d bet these bears would even act to protect Doug if someone harmed him, just like a dog would.
Watching Doug Seus with these bears makes me wonder why Randy at "Predators in Action" hasn't adopted his methods. I don't think Doug has ever had problems with his bears. But Randy's older bear, Dakota, is completely unmanageable now, and the younger bear killed his cousin Steven. There is a serious difference somewhere in training philosophy or the rearing of these animals. It would be interesting to get these two guys together to try and learn something.
Doug Sues and his wife have been training bear for over 20years. No rookies that's for sure. I would never in my right mind do or think to do anything like this, but more power to them. All those great movies the bears starred in without any fake scenes. Leave it to the professionals, right??
This is a very bright intuitive animal. I would suggest as bright as a chimp. Very aware of its own body and how to interact with a weaker play partner. But then that shouldnt be a surprise as female sow Grizzlies have to play carefully and use appropriate touch when interacting with tiny cubs. So their control is obviously finite. I have read somewhere that an adult grizzly can gently break an egg with just one gentle well aimed claw strike. So all of this makes sense. Beautiful complicated animal for sure.
all it takes is one little burst of rage juice from its anger glands into its little pea brain and you are dead, dude. I mean grizzlies are good at two things, being pissed off and fucking shit up.
Happy Dance, pray that happy dance stays a happy little dance or it could be entrails in the sunlight dance. God Bless these two with this great connection they have BUT Im sorry something that powerful and at that size has a " bad day" there is no escape if close to her. I pray it never happens
It reminds me of the couple that the influenced "Born Free" movie and became famous with lions. One of them was eventually killed by a wild lion I believe.
I'd shit my pants the first moment that huge grizzly bear started jumping circles around me.. and I've seen shit... that grandpa got some serious ballz!!
Watched him for years with his grizzlies. I can't help but notice although he is playing, he looks terrified that at any moment these bears can snap and rip his throat open. The bears looks like it wants to but something holds it back. One day there will be a sad ending to this guys playing with grizzlies.
Almost like a huge dog. But not just any one would be able to do that. She sees him as family. I doubt she would be that friendly with just any body. Its still a huge bear. Capable of killing you with one swipe. But its beautifull to watch there relationship,,,,
Nothing ever happened. Bart never tried to hurt him. He has had bears for decades. The original Bart was a Kodiak bear. He lived for nearly 24 years believe. And no not just anyone can do what he did.
Imagine how a human child would feel so loved hearing "good girl" or good boy" all their lives growing up.

That bear looks so do-gone happy. Plenty of room to run around in and a trainer who seems to have a genuine love for animals.
Like a playful puppy...A massive playful puppy capable of cleaving your torso in half with one swipe, but a puppy none the less

I think he has wolves too. I mean, he has a bear. 🐻 Why not?
You heard right and I also heard cannons or something going off when they were rolling around on the grass
Much love for Honey Bump, and her loving, compassionate care-givers! God Bless the Seus Household!!!

Doug is great man! Thank you.
This man is so terrified but loves the bear to much to stop the playing
Pretty sure bears sense your fear so I think he is comfortable with her
What are talking about? Doug Seus is the last person terrified of bears lmao
I would say he is aware of her power. Thats a big difference between being terrified.
