- A little ditty I wrote about good ol' Yorkshire
LYRICS:
I was born on holy land
Amongst the dales and Scarborough sands
Where the green grass grows
Underneath the white rose
I was raised here in the North
Just south of the Yorkshire moors
A little town out by the coast
And when I'm feeling down, I take a drive out to the east
Something picks me up when I just stare out at the sea
And when I hit the road, I miss the scenery
Right here, in God's Own Country
We don't need a London town
We've got our own Beautiful South
And if you wanna know the score
It's London nil, Hull four
Glasto ain't no Staxtonbury
And Reading ain't a patch on Leeds
Cos crowds sing louder in The North
We made The Human League, Pulp, and Kaiser Chiefs,
I bet Arctic Monkeys have stood here before me
I could move to Nashville, but I'm in good company
Right here, in God's Own Country
We set trends right here, and it makes me proud
If Wilberforce was still around, he should take a bow
And strange as it might seem, strangers say 'hi' in the streets
Right here, in God's Own Country
What would I drink, once the working day is through?
It's the only place on earth that I can get a proper brew
Oh I could move to China,
But I prefer the tea
Right here, in God's Own Country
And when he says my time is up
When I finally bite the dust
I've just got one last request
It won't cost an awful lot
Just burn my body in a box
And gather up whatever's left
Take me Flamborough where the white cliffs meet the sea
Throw me in the air and let me scatter in the breeze
Say your last goodbyes, then let me rest in peace
Right here, in God's Own Country

Thanks Sam! My Yorkshire born father in law just passed last week, he was paralyzed a few months ago and fighting stage 4 cancer, and beat Covid as well.
He loved to listen to this song. He remembers all the places you sing about from his childhood - as he’s been in Africa for the last 60 years. Ur song took him right back to his home.
We will play this at his funeral.
Thank you so much!
I'm not sure why I've only just seen this comment, but I wanted to say thank you. I hope this song continues to remind you of your father in law and the stories from his childhood.
@@iamsamturnerur so kind for that message. His send off was so special - thanks to ur song.
It was the perfect background to the photos of his life.

G'day Sam! Loooove your song! Is it available in sheet music?? I have a choir that would love to sing this for Yorkshire Day?
Hey Joel!
I'm afraid I don't have the sheet music. You are of course welcome to sing it and/or transcribe it though. It would be ace to hear it sung by a choir! 😀
