Dunwich is an endlessly fascinating site. At one time, it was second only importance to London. The town had many churches, and extended nearly two miles east from where the ruins are. The gradual silting up of the river Alde/Ore, caused the weird landscape of Orford Ness, several miles south down the coast: several extremely violent storms washed away part of the town in the 14th century. The safe harbour was destroyed by storm surges, and by this time, the sea was eating away at the coast. The expanse of north sea in front of you was, for a long time (my late father knew a man from Leiston who told him) called 'The Town'. A famous photograph, taken at the beginning of the last century, shows the tower of the last church in Dunwich, perched on the edge of the cliff. A few years later, it was on the beach. In thousands of bits, and shortly washed away. The area is well known to be rather creepy at night.
Anybody else thinking of HP Lovecraft's tale, The Dunwich Horror?
In 1964 I was one of many lads from H.M.S. Ganges who spent a weekend camping near there, I was climbing on the cliff and found a scull sticking out of the ground . I looked further and found rusty coffin handles, no wood was left though, so it must have been there for a long time

The little arch in the corner would've been where the statue of Mary was with the arched masonry hood over the top. I'm guessing the long room that has that in the corner was the actual refectory of the monestry with the main entrance the peaked arch at the opposite end. The rest of the building on the road side would've probably been the kitchen with the monestry offices and scriptorium above. The rest of the monestry would've consisted of seperate buildings for stores and monks cells.
Somewhere on the lands should also be the remains of ponds for fish breeding (Not too sure as it is near the sea and monks may've had their own fishing boats.) as well as orchards and an apiary.
There's lots of places like this around the UK. Some villages fell into ruin and abandonment after the plague of the 1300s decimated the populations.

It’s sad also when Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement’s are taken by the sea. It only takes a few hundred years depending how fast erosion is there.

Aah quality! This takes me back to my trip to Dunwich in middle school 😃.
interesting video guys! you should check out Waverly Abbey near Farnham in Surrey. I lovely old ruin, there's lots there. around the corner is a cave called old mother lunlem's cave also there's a couple of pill boxes and a gun emplacement there! the abbey itself was used in the films 28 days later and hot fuzz! well worth a visit. it's free too and a large parking area!

A beautiful old site but how stupid it was to knock some of it down to make it look like a ruin only to try and repair it afterwards. 😂xx

Hi Ian. I'm a longtime lurker in your channel. I really enjoy what you guys get up to. You may well know this but in response to the notion of creating ruins, I thought it was worth pointing out that Romanticism and ruins go hand in hand. They created them because it reminded them of their own fragility. I've linked a good summary, but a search of Google for 'ruins' and 'Romanticism' will bring plenty of studies and scholarly books. I'm a bit long in the tooth for a proper study these days, but the popularity of what you and others do might reveal a similar set of Romantic notions we still share with those 19th-century folks. Nice place :) Wonder how long it will be till Erosion erases this Site like happened along the Holderness Coast, Current shoreline used to be over 5km Inland and Dozens of Villages have been washed away since Roman times, Ravenspur being the most Famous.

That grave has probably 15-20 years from coastal erosion at most. 😢

Who stole the rest of it.?My guess is that it was used as a resource of cut stone for that church that fell in to the sea.and possibly local houses.
?its like some kind priory walled garden .probably not defensive but designed to keep undesirables out such as poachers and tea leaves. Possibly to keep out the wondering black death victims from spreading it to the monks .not forgetting bears and wolfs from taking livestock also the monastery's would somtimes have special isolated areas where lepers could hang out.? .pity they couldn't have shown the same respect to the monastery maintaince than maintaining that socking great boundary wall .its quite impressive that though that is mostly still up. Somebody must still be maintaining it today.?
