The past two decades have been jampacked with multiple movie franchises focused on teens stuck in some kind of game-based dystopia where their lives are at risk and everyone is dressed in gray. Along with The Hunger Games and Divergent, The Maze Runner is definitely on the list of the most well-known within that genre.
The Maze Runner definitely raises some questions though. Like did they REALLY try everything to reach the top of those walls? How much time did these people spend naming things? How do they know what grievers are if they only come out in the maze at night, and nobody has survived a night in the maze? Do any questions get answered in this movie?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to The Maze Runner.

That's like saying a football and a baseball are the same just bc you throw both of them. The Maze Runner from start to finish (the whole movie) is about getting out of a maze and that movie, the kids, already had a head start from trying and trying. HP maze "run" was the last 25-30 mins of the movie. Can't compare the two. If HP made an entire movie about getting through their maze your head would explode

It's because Ryan and Hallmark both accept one fact: the ending is a foregone conclusion, and there's no use pretending otherwise. We're here because we like predictability. The movie always winds up getting made, no matter how ridiculous its premise. The couple always finds their happily ever after, even if the whole world seems to be against them. Surprises are fun sometimes, but Hallmark is basically the cinematic equivalent of McD - safe, cheap and easy. AND you don't have to take a chance on an unknown variable that might let you down.

Neither of these guys seems to have aged too noticeably since Screenwriter Guy first pitched Star Wars, and that was like 40+ years ago. Alleigent didn’t make enough so they were just going to do straight-to-TV movies, but the actors didn’t sign up for TV pay and refused to do it. My personal favorites being that in the book Thomas incorrectly assumes that Grievers only come out at night to then be immediately corrected that they ALWAYS come out at night. The movie adapters apparently zoned out during that scene. Also the fact that Thomas got himself stung by a Griever because it had been established repeatedly in the book that going through the changing returned your memories to you, so it was a calculated risk to get more information. And he was comatose for 3 days, allowing the other Gladers to naturally exposit that the Grievers were clearly picking them off one at a time each day, explaining why they left immediately. How quintessentially Hollywood to take a super dramatic and solidly written story and inject it with nonsense to "fix it" for the silver screen.

There were issues with the second, but the characters were developed in interesting ways and the worldbuilding, while requiring a hefty suspension of disbelief, was good enough to get the job done, and didn't take away from my investment in the characters.

Without knowing what combats the Flare, how is building a bunch of mazes cost-efficient? We’re talking miles and miles and miles and miles of 50ft tall stone walls. And then at the end, one member of WICKED says something like “time to test one more variable” and the variable is Gally throwing a knife into Chuck’s stomach.
If THAT can be a variable with just two people and a knife, why are colossal stone mazes necessary.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't watched any of TCD, so I queued up a few. I also like Screen Junkies "Honest Trailers".

This is probably one of the funniest videos in this channel. A dozen times I had to go back 10s to watch the joke again, just to really savor it. Really well done man! :D

You should do Wanted. Watched it again recently and it seems like a perfect candidate for a pitch meeting

Watching Pitch Meetings, then watching Honest Trailers, maybe Cinema Sins Everything Wrong With if I’m up for it, then How it Should Have Ended… I genuinely feel like I watched and completely understood what happened in the movie without watching it, and in much less time!!!!! Super easy… barely an inconvenience!

I would like to see a Pitch Meeting for a Stanley Kubrick movie like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Dr Strangelove

It would fun to see one of these for an actual really good movie. Other possibilities would be Stalker, or Clockwork Orange. Have a seventies greenscreen office. Writer guy: "and then he kills her with a big plastic penis."
"Oh big plastic penises are tight!"

If I recall correctly, in the book Newt climbs to the top of the wall, sees there's no escape and jumps off the edge. He barely survived. that's all they had to say to explain it. But no Newt was all “The Vines don't go to the top” as if they couldn't build a ladder.

Yes and also in the books the maze is underground & so there actually is a roof on top of the maze. The sky is actually a massive screen meant to fool them into thinking they're outside. I believe they also programmed it to seem taller than it actually was so the boys wouldn't even try to climb it.

The code to escape the maze could just be the numbers in a specific order without regard to where in the order they begin entering numbers. For instance, 12345, 23451, 34512, etc, could all work.
