Gotta admit, for all of the monsters Stine came up with, Slappy was the most unnerving. I think a lot of that stems from how intelligent he is, but the fact that he treats everything he does as a little more than a game certainly helps. Slappy's moments of quiet menace are when he's at his scariest. There's a clear confidence that he *will* carry out his threats and there's nothing you can do about it.
TV Show is definitely the winner for me. His look is really WEIRD looking and his voice is perfect. It's a voice that can make you laugh and also hide under your covers. I find a good contrast between Scary Slappy and Funny Slappy is given right in the beginning of "Bride of the Living Dummy" when we go from Slappy cackling evilly as he sets up the deal with his new slave before transitioning to a show with Slappy telling jokes. Perfect voice. Though the one time he was played by an actor in a suit, he just looks stupid there, especially when you can see the actors mouth behind the mask.
Hey there 22Tesla, good to see you here. I think Night of the Living Dummy 3 is when Slappy is at his best. The larger Slappy model looks great in his introduction when Tina's dad is unveiling him, and sure that was to put an actor in it, but that also made Slappy feel more of a threat. Having worked with ventriloquist dummies in my past, I know they arent meant to be huge, but one could argue, like Rocky, Slappy was 'built' for a different era of stage performance. And thats the important part, Slappy still needs to be believable as a dummy. In Living Dummy 2, when he's being hugged, it's a sweet little moment that turns dark when his sneer manifests. Cal Dodd as Slappy, the first time I heard him say "So, you wanna be a prankster do you Zane? Well, let me show you how the pros do it", was perfect.
@thequietestengine Hmmmm fair enough. I just think Slappy looks a bit fat when it's an actor playing him because Slappy's head is meant to be a bit oversized on his puppet version. When the actor is playing him, his head looks a bit too small. But it does add to the creep factor seeing him actually chase after the kids.
@@22Tesla I think it's because I saw 'Living Dummy 3' first. Owned it brand new on vhs, so when I saw 'Living Dummy 2', seeing how small he looked made me feel less unsettled by him. Though also the dialogue was stronger too, like 'QUIET! You dont give the orders around here, I do! From now on, YOU listen to ME!". And his humor too, like the way he says "Frog in my throat!" and then cackles wildly, the fact I can talk about this 10 years since I last saw that episode shows how memorable he was.
Even though the TV show slappy isn't technically book-accurate looking the design is so good that I think it gets a pass. Frankly I think he looks far scarier in the show than on the cover of the books (which is not an insult to the book slappy)

I always looked at the film version slappy voice by his puppeteer as his voice in my head cannon.
tv show slappy's voice is perfect because it encapsulates that 30s - 60s tone and dialect, a time period where dummy puppets were the most popular. That or it's because this idea was from the twilight zone episode which was made during that time period.
“I’m not playing games. Get up and get dressed.” Specifically in that voice, sounds like a disappointed mother trying to get their child up for school 😂
Okay I know that I am a bit late to the party, but I must point out that the 90s Slappy doesn't resemble the book Slappy as much as the Movie Slappy. However, I will admit that the voice was a million times more creepier than Jack Black's given voice. But if I had to choose my top version of the character... then without a doubt it would have to be the movie Slappy, just because of how much more clever and powerful he seems to be. Of course that is just my own opinion. Loved this Slappy ranking, dude. Great job! 🤵😁👍👍
For me TV show Slappy wins hands down. Yes his look is different, but I think he's scarier. Voice is great, and he does some really unsettling things like turning Zane into a dummy and possessing a kid. I'd say he has some of the best episodes right behind the haunted mask.

Dennis, even though we only really hear him once, was extremely creepy and I love his demonic laugh at the end. I would love to know who voiced him as he has a great spooky voice. My best bet would be the voice actor of goofy from Mickey Mouse. It was very reminiscent of him and as of that being my childhood show, I find it tricky to be scared by that twist ending. I just laugh most of the time 😂 I really like the NOTLD 2 episode. The ending also left me on a cliff hanger and I always imagined that Dennis beat up the Kramer family after the cameras cut. I also love this episode as of the atmosphere in many of the scenes. I had nightmares about slappy walking through my hallway. He didn’t do anything else, he just walked through my hallway over and over again and it petrified me 😂 I feel like the third notld episode was the most well made. Or pretty much any other season 3 episode 😂 Even though I know that the one from season two is the best, I can’t help myself from being bias to the first one. As it was one of the first ones I ever saw so the nostalgia blinds me 😂 it’s a bit like deep trouble. However I do have my top two: 1: The scarecrow walks at midnight 2: A Night in terror tower 3: Either Stay Out of the basement off red welcome to dead house ( I can’t decide lol 😂) Scarecrow walks at midnight is scary, but well made and acted at the same time. The ending is dark and the best in the show by far. And, I watched this not long back and it still holds up. The first time I saw this was when I was ten and I instantly fell in love with it. I enjoyed every minute of it and I had nightmares for weeks of the dream scene with the scarecrow in her room Some people hate on a night in terror tower but I love it. The episode is so well written and I love that flash back scene and when they finally realise that they are in the medival period. With these next two I couldn’t decide, I’ve went back and forth for a long time now but I now think they are both amazing in their own way. Stay Out of the basement is utterly horrifying and I believe it is scarier than the haunted mask. Welcome to dead house is by far one of the most well written and acted episodes in the series and both are extremely dark and don’t pull and punches. Overall I love the show and it is probably the best kids horror of all time 10/10

I absolutely hate that they chose a British actor for the new series /: no bad talk to the actor or Brit’s. But I’ve ALWAYS heard him like a wise guy with a Brooklyn accent. That’s why the tv show slappy is the best. Though I’d have the voice a lowery register 7:09
I know. I swear I remember a night of the living dummy 1, and when I couldn’t find it as a kid, I assumed Netflix accidentally left it off as they sometimes did, but no, they just never made one

I remember as a kid I was so scared of the tv show slappy that I had to run to my mom crying and begged her to turn off the tv
Definitely agree with the rankings!
Interesting. Glad I found this
Where is or was the place in the beginning of this video? With all the Goosebumps models?
I'd love to see an adult version of goosebumps
4:41 Idc slappy from goosebumps is the best looking slappy ever literally nobody cannot beat his design.
0:52 that’s a GarageBand voice effect
Slappy sounded like an absuive Alvin from the Chipmunks in that Horrorland series 😭
The TV show version of Slappy was perfect.
Slappy:I want my bride
Me:ok Beetlejuice
I absolutely hate that they chose a British actor for the new series /: no bad talk to the actor or Brit’s. But I’ve ALWAYS heard him like a wise guy with a Brooklyn accent. That’s why the tv show slappy is the best. Though I’d have the voice a lowery register 7:09
I was surprised when I found out there wasn’t an episode based on the first book
I know. I swear I remember a night of the living dummy 1, and when I couldn’t find it as a kid, I assumed Netflix accidentally left it off as they sometimes did, but no, they just never made one
Jack black didn't return to slappys voice because he was too busy with other projects and thats why r l Stine was barley in the movie
TV Show version is the best Slappy, enough said!
marc thompson's slappy sounds like he wants camembert
Slappy from the TV show, freaked me out as a kid. After seeing his bulging eyes, and hearing his high pitched voice I stopped watching immediately, and I had nightmares for a long time. I didn’t try to watch it again for years.
His voice in the 2023 disney series is PERFECT
Ah, the origin of my phobia of dolls, the slappy from the original tv show.
The third guy who voiced Slappy sounded exactly like Bling Bling from Johnny Test
