Its not banned, I had to read it in High School. Real banned books are never mentioned, just books that weren’t carried in a handful of school libraries

@@JorgeRodriguez-my6ej it was being banned 2 years ago. But each ban is region specific and usually from a school library. At the time whis video was topical! Which I don't normally do.

    Maus is incredible story.

The Tennesse school board decided this book was inappropriate for 8th grade due to coarse language, one instance of nudity & some adult discussion of sexuality, among other things.
In other words, if this was a movie, it would be R-rated. Eighth graders would be too young to be admitted.
Maus is a great book, but it covers a very dark period of history that is not appropriate for all ages. I don't think children & young teens need to be traumatized about the horrors of war at this level. They need to feel secure.
High school is different because by about age 16 kids begin to have questions about serious issues & to think critically. They will soon be voters & the weight of the world will be upon their shoulders. A book like Maus will be important in instructing them about the realities of evil & why they need to be vigilant as citizens to protect our freedoms.
The word "banned" gets thrown around a lot any time a parent objects to a book, but it's really not that cut and dried. Many books just need to be managed age-appropriately.

Age appropriate-ness is totally important. At the time of this recording- it was all out banning, not putting it where the book belongs. I took AP European history in 10th grade and we were learning about the Holocaust. In that case this book would be age appropriate. I'm not arguing for elementary school kids reading this. I don't let my own kids read mainstream comics yet since they are not age appropriate to read them, in my parental opinion. I was arguing against all out banning.

I read this in school when I was 9. I was really fascinated with nazis and thought they were cool soldiers (I was naive) my teacher gave me this book to read and the cover made me think it looked cool, but then I realized it wasn’t about nazis, it was about the horrible stuff the nazis did, and wherever that teacher is, she changed my perspective a lot, and she never told me why but I assume it’s because I thought the swastika was cool and drew it a lot.

So, you're saying it's a really important book that everybody should read.... But only if you can afford to buy it or borrow a friends copy?
I'm sure my local library has a copy that I could read for free. But would that be stealing too?
