My grandparents were rounded up and barely survived a mass shooting in WW2. When they rebuilt their house in the 1950s, they included a panic room. It was strictly hush-hush well into the 1980s. The fear never left them.

Fantastic video. Everyone, in their own way, contributing to the discourse. Loved it. You guys consistently produce the best content about comics on this platform.

One of the things that struck me when I first read this book (1991/92) was that it was the absolute opposite of the hurried, deadline driven, type of work that we were mostly used to see in comics until then; Spiegelman had decided that he would take all the time in the world he would need to produce a comic book that would be important to him, and that is one of the reasons why he achieved such a high level of artistic realization for this piece, in my opinion.

Always great when Warren drops in. Maybe we'll see another installment of CGC snuff this week.

Spiegelman would sometimes sprinkle in autobio in the experimental comics he made in the 1970’s. Check out “As The Mind Reels” from Arcade #4. There is a conversation that occurs in the strip by two stand-in characters for Art and his stepmother Mala. Art is asking Mala about her relationship with his father and she responds by complaining about how he is tight with money and about his hoarding. She also touches upon his declining health. It’s kind of interesting to read after reading Maus because a lot of it will sound familiar.

Nice video and amazing books. I never owned any copies myself. Everytime I went to Half Price Books I would see a bunch of the shelf, and even more in the clearance section. Did I want to pay $6 for a used copy or $3 for a slightly beat up used copy. I always told myself that I would decide next time when my hands weren't alread full with other books that I was buying. Then one day a school board decide to remove it from it's schools and everyone around the country started picking up every copy like it was the last. It's strange how a book can by litterally be in clearance bins one day and the very next day be a higly sought after book.
One day I will add these two books to my collection. I just have to pay a little more now. Great art and amazing story.

Fantastic episode. Thank you for doing one on Maus. It's hard to believe there are holocaust deniers. This should be required reading in every school.

Yesterday, Jan. 27th, 2022, the news came out that a school board in Tennessee is banning "Maus." I looked up this video again to refresh my memory. Might I suggest that this would be a good time to review book 2?
(Not that you're going to read this!)

The transcript show how feeble their objections were, and a pretext to ban Holocaust Studies for 8th graders just before the 77th anniversary of Holocaust Remembrance Day. Maybe they'll go after curriculum about Japanese-American Internment camps next.

I've been waiting for you to do this one! I appreciate you guys' empathy towards what the Jews went through. And that your acute interest in Vladic Spiegelman's story speaks to the dynamic potency of the comic book medium. I love it that you prefaced this exploration with examples of funny animal propaganda comics.
Watching you retell the narrative, I was struck by the thought that Maus is the comic book medium's Schindler's List.

I heard elsewhere that he put out _Maus I_ just before Spielberg did _An American Tale_ so people wouldn't say he was copying the latter.

    Keep up the good work.

Great video as always! Maus is one of my favourite graphic novels. I only have one issue with the video, my version of the book doesn't end like that, there is an extra part where Vladek is sick in bed and later you see his death date. I always loved that ending, it really stuck out to me the first time I read it, especially the closing line where Vladek gives his last farewell to Art saying “Goodnight Richelieu.”
I bought it in Italy around 2016-2017 so I’m assuming it might be something added to later editions. Does anyone know anything about this?

I remember reading an interview where the writer artist said he would never allow it to be made into an animated movie or movies. I really wish he would allow it to be rendered in Animation. I understand especially with also having family who died in the Shoah it's never an easy thing. I did however with much soul searching if it was myself I think I would have allowed it. But that's me.
