Thanks for covering Bone! Had the privilege to work at Jeff’s old animation studio in Powell OH back in the late 90s, they had original pages to issue #1 in the conference room. We were working on the 1st iteration of the Bone movie & I even got to clean up Jeff’s pencils for development art. Magical times!
Definitely one of the most impressive aspects of the series and what stood out to me the most is how well Smith is able to create visual jokes and kinetic storytelling that really is incredibly difficult to pull of so effortlessly and ubiquitously in a work. But there are countless sequences of panels that is almost like actually WATCHING a fully animated classic cartoon. He really is a master at it, and his experience in animation REALLY shows. As an animator myself, and discovering this series while I was a student for an animation degree, it was always one of my favorite aspects of Smith’s work and this series in general.
Woke up, turned on RUclips, "YES!!!" ...Christmas in April. Everyday since subscribing, I've come to scratch my daily kayfabe itch, with the hope that I'd be met with a thumbnail of Bone. Truly awesome guys!!!
Jeff Smith is the most humble artist I've ever met in person. He really takes time with people no matter how long the line is, doesn't get bent with people that are having him sign tons of stuff they're probably flipping on ebay, I really don't know how he does it. He's very generous. Respect.
Yours is the podcast I recommend most highly to EVERYONE!!! The fact that you cover ALL comics and aspects of comic art is sorely needed!!! Another stellar episode!!! THANKS A MILLION GUYS!
Great video. And ha... the name "Funny Bone" is almost too perfect - it totally fits with "Fone Bone" and "Phoney Bone". I wonder if that was actually Smiley Bone's original name?
luv all these quiet moments where the two of you are just taking in the page and enjoying the comic. I remember the THRILL of racing home with a new issue of Bone and just savoring every panel, not wanting it to end. i was lucky to discover Bone at issue #8. Great years for comics.
Been wanting to read Bone for a while now but was put off by the option of color vs B&W. I'm from the UK so I love OG 2000ad and I do love manga too but people always talk about how good Bone is in color but you boys have sold me on the B&W version and it's super cheap over here too! The Kayfabe effect is real, i've learned so much from listening to you guys, keep up the good work! Also, any more shoot interviews coming up? I can't get enough of em.
I was that guy that got into Bone because our school had a "magazine fundraiser drive," and my parents being avid readers wanted their kids to have a magazine. I went with Disney adventures, and while there was some cool Jackie Chan comics, it was Bone that I became a fan of. I ended up buying the big hardcover from Jeff Smith himself at a WonderCon.
As a Columbus Ohio boy myself that works for the Ohio State University, Bone is a special point of pride for me. Outstanding series. His more adult series RASL is quite excellent too.
Got an Image Comics #1 copy, it's in such a bad condition, but I love it so much. This title is the greatest thing ever. Recently I found volumes 1 and 2 of Scholastic colored collections, I'm waiting for my daughter to ask me to read those.
Happy Sunday to me. I was hoping you guys would get around to Bone at some point. I have all the originals and just got the 20th anniversary full color collected edition. It is a thing of absolute beauty.
I remember hitch-hiking to a convention in Manchester back in the nineties when I first discovered Bone. I was in my early twenties at the time, and without a girlfriend. A very attractive woman was at the table where the first few issues of Bone were for sale. I was genuinely impressed by the comic, (and eager to impress the cute girl) and thinking that she drew them, started telling her how talented I thought she was. She said, "Oh, I didn't draw them. My husband did. He's right behind you." I'm pretty certain my face was completely red as I turned around. He graciously signed my copies of Bone #'s 1,2 & 3. Sadly, I no longer have those comics, which probably would be worth a lt right now....
I was born in ‘81. Discovered Bone in the Disney Adventures Mag, started collecting the issues at #12, got all the back issues and read the thing until issue 55.
There were a few comics people were reading when i was a kid, but i was reading Bone! I am very blessed to have read Bone when growing up. Scholastic book fairs really were awesone when i would see the next bone issue i didn't have!
This popped up on my RUclips again. Something’s that jogged my memory. Steve and I were in the same class at CCAD. He met Jeff while working on the toy line for him when Steve was at a local company called Resaurus(?) I think. Jeff would bring this up in interviews but he tweaked Bone as he went along. So it’d be a curiosity to go back to the original issues and the final final version- Scholastic to see what he tweaked along the way. It might be subtle changes or big ones. I don’t know, but as a process junkie, I’m intrigued.
I loved Bone growing up. Looking forward to reading Red Room #1 and the Pen Art Notebook. May I recommend a kayfabe on Gore Shriek. Early Capullo goodness.
I've been putting off the one-volume color HC, but I think I might have to go ahead and pull the trigger. It's such an amazing story! RASL is no joke, either!
It must be such a different experience reading Bone in this format compared to the brick... btw if anyone missed it, Jeff Smith is doing a Kickstarter for his new series TUKI and it's awesome :)
Loved this series so much, I got into this via the 4th or 5th Image reprintings? I actually didn’t love the colour editions - in my mind they’d be more of a flat animation style colours?
What do y'all think they were saying instead of "Smiley Bone"? Slappy Bone? Goofy Bone? Edit: should have waited til the end of the vid before posting... Anyways, what did y'all think they were saying? I was pretty close.
THIS IS A COMMENT FROM A BUYER IN AMAZON I DONT AGREE WITH HER WHAT DO YOU THINK? ''Completely inappropriate for young kids. My 8 year old son said he was really enjoying this book. He doesn't love reading so I was eager to see what he was reading. I was sickened the more I got into the book. I couldn't believe this was for kids. Page one, there is already a guy smoking a cigar. Then later he says he hopes that "Smiley doesn't run out of cigars before I catch up to him." The dragon is smoking as well. Then he's screaming for a beer at the bar. Then when he gets introduced to the main girl in the story, he is spying on her in the woods. She then takes off her pants. She's covered but they use 3 full panels for her to get her pants off and there is a lot of leg showing. The next scene shows Bone's hat catching fire after seeing her undress. Way to sensual. Later she takes a bath in the river and Bones once again is sensually drawn to her, and she has him bring her soap. I don't think my little guy caught what was going on, but it's an introduction to that type of thing. Inappropriate at 8 years old.Later as they run away from these creatures of nightmares, her dress falls off progressively more and more with a full cleavage, and exposed leg shot in there. These just are things I'm trying to protect my little guys from as long as I can. Pornography is way too prevalent in this world as it is.''
if you dip a french fry into a milkshake, you'll have a mouthgasm. if you listen to led zeppelin for the first time, you'll have an eargasm. if you see ryan gosling walking down the street, you'll have an eyegasm. little known fact: if you read Understanding Comics and the Bone bible back-to-back in one sitting, you will experience a once-in-a-lifetime Comicsgasm.

Very cool story bro!
You have any of the movie development stuff?

I bought my Bible edition from Jeff the same day I met & tabled next to Raina Telgemeier at Mid Ohio Con.

Bone is my favourite comic, and a huge influence on me. I’d love to see you guys go through the full series!
I think I've left this comment under other vids, but... what a pleasure it is to see a master at work. Inspirational.
Rewatchin this with my re-read! Great vid guys!!!
How has Bone not been animated yet? I recall talks and preliminary sketches back in the 90s. Hope it happens someday.
Netflix announced a series!

Still waiting for that Netflix adaptation.

Hell yeah! Been wondering when Jeff Smith’s Bone would finally get in the mix!
I went to IUP as well. RIP Patty's Paperbacks, the comic store he refers to.
Bone is an underrated masterpiece. Beautiful artwork and absolutely amazing reading.
Love this long video and this channel. Thank you.

Given the animation angle (which I didn't know about), I'm seeing a ton of Harvey Comics influence in this now.
Discovered Bone when I was in middle school and have loved it ever since. I have the b&w omnibus and it's one of my favorite books
I love his storytelling, delicious stuff, perfect timing and movement.. Btw why the automatic voice for Smiley? 😅
The sweat drops flying off character's heads are called plewds, I believe.
I loved Bone growing up. Looking forward to reading Red Room #1 and the Pen Art Notebook. May I recommend a kayfabe on Gore Shriek. Early Capullo goodness.
One of my favorites, I have the compendium and lots of single issues. Even the story they published in Disney Adventures magazine back in the day.
Great video, any chance of reviewing the Scholastic editions? BONE was one first graphic novels published by the Graphix imprint.
Thanks for going through this one. I bought the 1st volume to read with my son. Love it!
Any plans on looking at RASL?
are you guys fans of Ben Edlund's original run on "The Tick"? I'd love to see a deep dive on the original Tick comics.
Cartoonist Kayfabe Tick 1 video: ruclips.net/video/xgJTYhzsWeQ/видео.html
That explains why bone was at my book fairs in elementary school lol
Read Bone: Coda for an additional short story and a lot of information about the history of Bone and it's influence on the comics publishing industry!
I've been putting off the one-volume color HC, but I think I might have to go ahead and pull the trigger. It's such an amazing story! RASL is no joke, either!
Jeff Smith is releasing his latest graphic novel this year. Wouldn't that be a perfect reason for a shoot interview?
Any chance we get a dive into Smith’s RASL? Please 🙌🙌🙌
I like the robot overdub. SMILEYBONE.
man i remember collecting this master piece as it came out
once every two or three months ...
do RASL next pls
Underrated masterpiece, RASL has this incredible story.. What a surprise.
Spirits definitely inspired Bob to do SPACE.
Do a Winshluss episode. I would love to hear you two talking about his Pinocchio!
It must be such a different experience reading Bone in this format compared to the brick... btw if anyone missed it, Jeff Smith is doing a Kickstarter for his new series TUKI and it's awesome :)
My favorite comic franchise alongside The Walking Dead comics
You guys should cover Mark Kistler the PBS cartoonist dude.
19:22 Hol up, Wolverine can't smoke anymore?? Seriously?
This has been the case since Quesada took over as EIC in like, 2002. No smoking for any characters. Wolverine, Kingpin, etc.
Loved this series so much, I got into this via the 4th or 5th Image reprintings? I actually didn’t love the colour editions - in my mind they’d be more of a flat animation style colours?

Ordered as many Red Rooms as I justifiable could for our shoppers.
Goddam masterpiece.
Just picked up Carnage no.1 by Eternity Comics, is anyone familiar?
You guys need to do a vid on Asterix.
Yes!!
Been waiting for this one , thank you gents! 8=8 !!!
This style reminds me of Vaughn Bodé
DISNEY ADVENTURES MAGAZINE!! ooh yeah I used to get em at checkout..or I should say made my Mum buy it :P
The humans in bone have a lil abner quality to them
What do y'all think they were saying instead of "Smiley Bone"? Slappy Bone? Goofy Bone?
Edit: should have waited til the end of the vid before posting... Anyways, what did y'all think they were saying? I was pretty close.
Ed, I love you bud, but the Arch is a national monument, not a bridge. It's literally just a giant steel arch on the riverfront.
