The art in these books was just so…beyond what anyone else has any capability of doing. Its got some indescribable quality.
Speaking of Morrison's tightly-woven script. There's this great subtle mystery woven throughout that Quintum is reformed Lex Luthor from the future. It's not explicitly stated, but just a fun thing that Morrison and Quitely have sprinkled throughout the series. For example, first issue: Lex talking to Quintum, then General Lane says: “Lex? Are you talking to yourself again?”
I love this comic. I'll admit, there's an issue later where Superman saves a young girl and what he told made me cry, honestly. This comic does have pathos.
It made me cry, too. I'm a little choked up just thinking about it.
I hope you put Multiversity #4: Pax Americana under the microscope sometime, an amazing Quitely/Morrison issue.
"Turns out Grant Morrison can write good comics," - glad Ed's finally seen the light! :D
There’s a great Easter egg in issue 3- keep an eye on the newspaper 📰 it appears at the start during the dinosaur invasion, and shows an advert for a car. Later, when Sampson shows superman the same newspaper, the corner is lifted up and you can see the car ad underneath. When the Ultrasphinx lays down the riddle, superman’s answer is the copy from the car ad, which he read ‘through’ the newspaper earlier on.
I think the Project is a reference to the Cadmus Project, the super scientific collective Kirby introduced in his run on Jimmy Olson. Morrison incorporated everything
I love how Quitely is often mindful of background details and how these details would look once the "camera" angle is shifted. Definitely makes me pay closer attention to the artwork more than I normally would. Anything by Quitely/Morrison is a classic, in my eyes.
One of the all-time greats. Morrison and Quitely can do no wrong, in my view.
I’m trying to read that punisher galactic story lol
Gents could you do a Video about the last 6 issues of All-star Superman? Also Invite Tom on this one.
THE Superman story with Morrison and Quitely on full burners, channeling the Silver Age wonder of the Man of Steel through the lens of the 21st Century. And, holy Hell: Steve frelling Lombard?!? Oh, my giddy aunt!
And this is just the first half!
Keep it comin', kidz! 🖖♾
ps: Congrats, Ed, on RED ROOM #1! Picked up my copy at Heroes in Charlotte: Excellent work, Sir!
Issue 400 of Superman has some great artists. Maybe one day we will see a review here
Fun fact: The colorist, Jamie Grant, owns the building in Glasgow where Frank Quietly's studio is located and has essentially donated a couple floors in the building for Frank and a few other artists to work out of.
Loves the acknowledgement of Quitely's love for Moebius, you guys missed the direct nod with Stel and Atan's ship from 'The Gardens of Aedena' appearing in Superman's fortress!
Quintum is a Morrison creation, but some people have theorized that he's Lex Luthor who traveled back in time. I don't think Morrison has ever confirmed nor denied it.
Shadow of the collosus is a masterpiece
IMO hands down one of the best Superman stories ever told (along with Red Son).
Probably my favourite superhero comic. Got me really excited about superman but I’ve never found another one that’s nearly as good
Paused the video at 21:25 and went down a Chip Kidd rabbit-hole. Couldn't find the glass covers, but it was still worth the trip. I'd only ever heard of him through you guys talking about him on this channel. What an absolute master.
Issue 6 was the best issue.the emotional swing from laughing so hard to tears running down your face.its just an emotional rollercoaster.
Gorgeous work from two great creators. Both the video and the comic
I've been waiting for you guys to review this one!
Have a nice Collector‘s Edition. Fun to see the single issues packed with ads. 😂
I knew it was only a matter of time until you guys out this under the microscope. An exceptional Sunday Deepdive.
I loved this book back when it was coming out. Love this episode. Fun comics for me. Thanks guys.
A seminal work. Glad you guys are covering it!
7-12 Please!
Love it when Ed talks about Shadow of Colossus! WOW!
Great video, this is one of the top 3 Superman stories ever.
Man, what a fun ride the review this series with you two
I can remember talking to an acquaintance about the all star line of book when they were about to launch and he was adamant the Batman book with Miller and Lee was going to be huge. I love this comic and when someone asks me about the best Superman story this is the one I always mention. I got the floppies and the absolute and I will probably buy the deluxe HC. The only thing I remember about All Star Batman was it was late.
My favorite comic of all time, and the inspiration for my first tattoo the first appearance superman logo
Great comic, thank you! Jim, love the process stuff. Please do a vid where you discuss both your processes in detail (assuming you haven't already).
Love that Red Room is a hit congrats man!! A techno Video Drome-esque arc would be dope. Long live Kayfabe!!
Best superman ever. Warner...take notes
The informed discussions on the craft of comic books is why I came to Cartoonist Kayfabe and moments like Ed imploring Jim to play Shadow Of The Colossus is why I stay.
One of my fave comics 🤩
I love Chip Kidd but I wasn’t a fan of his type treatment on these books. A cold helvetica looking font doesn’t vibe with me when I think of Superman.
That Kong add on the back of the front cover is dope
Thanks for this! One of my favourite Superman stories. Nice to revisit. Have to dig out and reread. Hands down my favourite Lex Luthor.
More red room!!!!! So good! More more more!! Can’t wait for hulk grand design!!
Jim, if you want to drop your unsold Punisher/Galactus script on your Patreon or something please do so.
Masterpiece.
Another great video, guys.
Red Room is SICK.
I want to say those dinos are a Getter Robo reference. Ken Ishikawa, represent!
...and Ultra-Sphinx is Giant Robo, aka Johnny Sokko's Flying Robot.
Heck, Doomsday Olsen has an Ultraman Color Timer going off when he's about to de-Doomsday.
Looking forward to part 2 so I can show off my page 😃
Please do 7 through 12 next week. This was great!
I love this. Will you guys also do Superman For All Seasons at some point?
The very best Superman comic. And I dare say it. Very well written, epically drawn, and so tight as a comic that is iconic and gets the essence of Superman eternally right. It’s a great prequel to morrison’s DC 1million book. Aside from that, shadow of colossus is a classic game.
Yeeeesssss
Please make second part!
Just pulled the trade from my reread stack last night. Mostly good things, though one complaint I won't dig into now.
If Pax Americana is Grant’s Watchmen, is this his “Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow”?
15 years. Good god. The only thing that really dates it is the Aeon Flux ads. This is pre-iPhone!!
Jeff Smith did a Shazam miniseries?
Loved this episode, so glad you did it. Hope you get to their single issue PAX AMERICANA one day.
I love that book it’s so fun very silver age love the frank qquitlyart
In terms of Identity, I've always thought of it as Clark Kent, the guy who just wants to do the right thing; Clark Kent, the bumbling reporter; & Superman, the hero that Earth needs, that Clark Kent isn't.
shadow of the colossus callout! amazing game
Morrison rules so much
The advertisements in these issues very distracting and there are far too many.
Link to the vid about the Chip Kidd glass covers y'all mentioned, so cool. [ ruclips.net/video/v01BCF_VOfc/видео.html ]
That Chip Kidd video: ruclips.net/video/v01BCF_VOfc/видео.html
The Chip Kidd's video mentioned: ruclips.net/video/v01BCF_VOfc/видео.html
Followed from ComicTropes, Morrison, Moore, and Vaughn really got to me.
Those are a lot of Nintendo ads that aren't just Mario Bros lol.
Here's the Chip Kidd glass covered books video :)
