It took three guys from Glasgow to show us how to do Superman properly.
I love this comic. Best Superman ever!
    Great episode.

I think the great revelation in All-star Superman is that Superman’s greatness has nothing to do with his powers and everything to do with his kindness, his altruism.

That final panel of Superman becoming a literal sun-god navigating a solar-barque is absolutely perfect. Morrison nailed the concept and Quitely nailed the art.

Bar-El specifically refers to H.M.P. Barlinnie, Glasgow's Victorian prison situated in the East end of the city. It's locally known as Bar L. Fitting then that Bar-El becomes the Phantom Zone's jailer.

I think this work owes a lot to the Alan Moore Superman stories from the 80s, especially the pre-Byrne era two-part "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" and his 90s run on Supreme.

Issue 10 is also my favorite of the bunch, and one of my all time favorite single issues from any title. I still remember first reading that scene with the suicidal girl, and being so moved by it. Despite the weight of a million other responsibilities, Superman was able to pick up that random phone conversation happening in the background and save that one girl, who he sees as equally as important as the other large scale matters at hand. This along with the final few pages of his Doom Patrol run were those rare comic book moments that had got me all emotional. Glad you're giving Doom Patrol another try, Ed. :)

Grant Morrison also wrote DC’s 1 Million event, which imagined the millionth issues of the DC pantheon set in the distant future in which The Golden superman finally emerges from the sun to reunite with Lois.

Correct. If you're familiar with philosophy he's supposed to be Aristotle's unmoved mover, which is considered to be God or the first cause. This is both a play on Superman being an all powerful being, literally an unmovable force, and also a perfect good being.

I don’t know all of the references, but I love that on Earth Q as we move through history, we’re getting all of the cultural milestones that led to the idea of Superman. The cave paintings, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola talking about aspiring to be like angels, Nietzsche, all culminating in Siegel and Shuster. Superman as an idea is an inevitable culmination of human culture even if he doesn’t physically exist in that universe. Just genius

I think now would be the time to do the video on the worst to best Superman Analogs. I want to know where you’d put : Supreme, Apollo, Omniman, Homelander, True Man, and Samaritan.

That's good to hear because I hated the masthead's for the all star line. Would like to see what Kidd actually wanted to do. It's not surprising though because I have yet to see a new masthead from either of the big two that looks good.

the page when they attack superman and say "a soft wee scientists son" there is also a head butt. or what is known locally as "a Glasga kiss". Also the front cover Bar-el is ment to look like a N.E.D. basically crap Glasgow gangsters.

  • @MoonGluedStudios
    @MoonGluedStudios Год назад

In terms of the style of the colors and pencils evolving over the course of this series, its important to note that these issues-- especially these later ones-- were significantly delayed and took a long time to come out... not as long as All Star Batman, but long enough for things to gestate a little between chapters!

I have yet to read that one. Been wanting to buy it for years but I just hate the colors.
The palette, the way it's applied with all those shiny effects and unnecessary modeling...
I guess once you read you forget about it but still...
    Love Quitely line though.
