Those sunday comic sections man, I have read enough newspaper strips to know that pre 1950s comic sections were amazing, but just seeing the physical objects it just hits you that pre television culture was just a different universe. Also seeing those circulation numbers it makes you even sicker to your stomach that Siegel and Shuster weren't set for life!

I just gotta say, there's something strangely wholesome about that "Boys, get a large hand coloured photograph of your dog!" ad at the beginning. Just something about reading Superman and getting a custom picture ordered of your best friend. Gives me the good feels. Granted I wish it said "Kids, get a large...etc" but still. Wholesome. 🥰

Everytime Warren says he acquired something "last century" it freaks me the hell out!

I’ve been reading comics since the mid 60’s and I always appreciate the history of the characters, the nuts(LOL) and bolts and much fact as possible! These daze I’m gradually distancing myself from corporate bullshit comics, love reading and hate cliches/rants and repetitive stories! And gd it took me long enough! As always love ❤️ the diversity of the channel! Big thanks to Warren and his straight forward enthusiasm/knowledge! Keep the history of comics warts and all alive for future generations! Also... Keep reading and making comix!

Warren stopping by is always a treat and I learn so much.
Also: that baby at 13:03 is the most terrifying creature of the entire comic.

For early Superman masterpieces, the only thing that leaps to mind is the animated Fleischer cartoon, "The Mechanical Monsters."

There was an attempt by Fox Features Syndicate to replicate Superman's success in 1939 and 1940 with their character, Blue Beetle. Simultaneously in 1940 they put out a comic book series, a newspaper strip, and a radio show. Also on July 3, 1940 the New York World's Fair had a Superman Day featuring an actor in a Superman costume, 5 weeks later on August 7, 1940 there was a World's Fair Blue Beetle Day. On another note the first Superman story featured a villain called "The Light" which turned out to be Luthor, if you remember the first season of the Young Justice animated series featured a mysterious organization called "The Light" which was a group of long time DC villains including Luthor.

In the first volume of golden age cap america masterworks roy thomas said that while superman was content to battle lex luthor and random foes, kirby and simon were some of the first to address the nazi issue, it was a surprise to find out that actually superman did it before cap (in a magazine and not in the comic but still)

You guys should look into Byrne's Man of Steel run. I believe his initial pitch was turned down due to some changes he made to the origin. Frank Miller also had a pitch around the same time. I don't think the case of Superman not being interesting is due to limitations in story telling but more so in limitations of the editorial in charge.

Oh, funny. I just a few weeks ago reread the sequel to the Archer story. Written about 1980 in the Mr & Mrs Superman backup that ran in Superman family and set on Earth-Two with the Golden Age Superman's life in the late 40's? 50? One of my favorite features of all and helped Earth-Two Superman become one of my fav characters ever. Also helped me see all pre-1955 comics as not just being Golden Age but Earth-Two tales along with the All-Star Comics revival (thanks to Wally Wood's awesome catching of the original Superman's squinty-eyed, broadshouldered look, like Ordway would in the 80's with All-Star Squadron).

Start with the birth of jesus and then every page is like 100 years of human history so when you get to the 1900s you already have like 20 pages
