I worked with Paul on Jingle Belle for a couple years, and he provided full scripts. No Marvel method.

The Scarecrow redesign in New Adventures was Mike Mignola and the BT comic book coloring Jim couldn't remember was Whisper for First Comics.
Coloring Bruce's stuff is tricky. I did coloring on a Justice League promo piece that he did a rendered blue-line and black marker drawing for. I tried to emulate his marker style the best I could and I guess he didn't hate it too much because I still worked for him after that, but no one can color Bruce's stuff as well as Bruce can.

@@jcjc4164 I'm not sure? The only reason I knew Bruce did comic coloring was because it came up in conversation when I saw something that I colored in the 90's in a dollar bin. BT then pulled out a copy of Whisper that he colored. Eventually we all end up in the dollar bin at some point.

15:51 - You can see Buster and Babs Bunny (no relation😉) from Tiny Toons Adventures (which Timm and Dini both worked on) hanging from the ceiling.

Tom's right. 9:27 The recolor of Harley's face you call out as looking bad certainly looks closer to his coloring of her on the guide at 31:45

It’s pretty cool to see that no only did Timm do the breakdowns, and the lettering, he also did the final inks and then did a marker color guide.

7:00 - see Ivan Brunetti's legendary strip "22 Panels That Always Work", repetition. (after Wally Wood's 22 Panels That Always Work). Darwyn Cooke uses this same technique in one of his Spidey stories for Tangled Web. There's a wonderful page in an issue of Cable, with cable drinking coffee, that illustrates this gimmick perfectly, featured in an old issue of TCJ.

Always wondered if my copy of this was unique in having a misprint on pg. 23 (the “23” is printed twice, second time on Harley’s right arm) but it looks like the version shown here has it as well

Wasn't Harley Quinn's first comic book appearance one of the issues of The Batman Adventures? Number twelve or something.

I never did find either of these Mad Love collections at Ollie's. However, this week I DID find a Batman: Mad Love "Adult Coloring Book" which is a full TPB with Mad Love and three additional stories. Only $1.99 and the paper quality is pretty good. May be a good alternative for a cheap "Essentials" version with the uncolored art. Also spotted was a Batman: Hush Coloring book with the first four issues.

To see Bruce Timm's beautifully rendered color guides with copic markers and to know no one thought... let's just use these... is insane to me... And to realize they thought they could reproduce some of those effects with a photoshop airbrush and gradients is also insane. Those recolored pages look horrible... the marker color guides look AMAZING... what weird decisions? I guess each company has there system they have to stick to. I want a book reproduction with Timm's marker coloring or... the original flat coloring, which also looks good.

If you get to the end of the video where they go over Timm's color guides, they ended up admitting that the "wrong" colors in the Deluxe edition were actually closer to Timm's intentions.

I have read this story many times through years and never noticed the irony, until this video, that Joker is furious towards Harley when she suggests simply shooting Batman, then he tries to shoot Batman later in the story!

  • @roarsack503
    @roarsack503 2 года назад

It seems to me ALL of the bad recolors you pointed out were actually an attempt to make it closer to Tim's color guides. From Harley's sculpted-out nose to the shadows on the enraged Joker's face. I appreciate the idea, but perhaps they should have put more effort into making it look more like markers instead of the default airbrush.

I picked up Road to Perdition 2, Preacher Book 2, Return of the Living Deadpool, The Sandman Overture Deluxe Edition, Silver Age Suicide Squad, Weirdworld, Star Wars Where's the Wookie 2, and suspiciously Jane's in Love.... kinda starting to think Jim Rugg has a secret deal with Ollies to pimp their comic book section and sell a few more of his own books. ;)

Me! I found the coloring book, but nothing else Mad Love/Timm related. I did pick up the second "The Fox" collection by Dean Haspiel and Mark Waid. I LOVE the Toth version of the Fox from the 80's, so I'm looking forward to checking it out.

And Batman will forever sound like Kevin Conroy to me. I always hear his voice in my head when reading Batman now, lol.
This is such a great book, challenging and pretty dark, certainly not the "safe" milquetoast fare we see these days. How many times in the last few years have we seen villains not be permitted to be villainous, you know? Plus what they've done to Harley. I never liked her in the mainstream DC comics, always felt like an out of place try-hard since that first appearance, like they never really understood what made her great (that she's such a tragic figure is big part of it; she's very sympathetic despite being a complete psycho herself) in the animated universe.
At least we'll always have the classics like this and the other Dini/Timm books that feature Harley Quinn. Hell, I remember a period in the 90s when "Batman Adventures" was the best Batman book on the stands, but I can't recall off the top of my head who the actual writers and artists were for most of those. I see another foray into the long boxes in my future, lol.
