Very helpful video. Cleared a lot up. I do use popular music from time to time and get "copyright ID claim" but no strikes on the music use. I did get a strike for using some video of a jungle scene that I put green screen characters across, and the owner hit me hard with a brutal copyright strike. We talked it through as it was transformative, and they removed the strike. I wish YT would arbitrate fair use claims before hitting a channel with a copyright strike. After all, YT does ENCOURAGE remixing and taking clips of other videos.

This is a topic that frustrates me terribly on youtube as a UX specialist. I post videos in which I use music from paid stock, free of copyright by default. And every single one of my videos is flagged by youtube as containing copyright infringing content. All I can do is open a dispute, and show the licence number. So, as a UX specialist, I would recommend that RUclips somehow simplify this interface. For example, it makes sense to remember that I have the right to use the track and not ask for the licence a week later in another video. And I'd also really like it to be possible to open a dispute for all tracks in a video at once, rather than having to fill out the damn form seven times over and over again.

Yes, sometimes I get a copyright infringement claim for using a movie trailer but I have permission with the movie company or PR person to use the material and they put me on a whitelist so therefore I usually receive no more copyrighted claims. If I do receive a claim I email it to the person in charge and since we already built a relationship they release the claim. Remember this, the movie trailer can not stand on it's own you have to have a voice over or announcement before the trailer or movie clip.

I film car shows, which often have unintentional music that gets picked up by the microphone. When I hear music I have to film five to eight second clips with a five second break in between filming each clip to avoid copyright claims. It takes much longer to film and edit this way. I know I can fight it since it's unintentional music as a result of covering a newsworthy event and have done so successfully on one video, but it takes awhile to hear back. I try to get my videos up within 24 hours of filming, so a long wait doesn't work for me. RUclips really should have a setting for those of us covering live newsworthy events with music playing not added by us to be able to avoid these claims. I can't believe that with all the technology for checking these videos it can't tell the difference between music added in editing and music picked up by a mic.

    My copyright claim stories... FUNNY...
    1. Get a copyright claim from the music publisher. BUT... it's MY song I wrote and recorded. Strike removed. At least I know that MY publisher was looking after me.
    2. Download a RUclips song that is copyright free - or at least free to use. Immediately get a copyright claim. I remove song and write to YT that I will NEVER use their songs again if they can't honor what they provide.
Bottom line. Don't trust music downloaded. If you use something like Motion Array, etc. be sure to download the use certificate and copy that information into the description.

I would add ‘and C - just because an ad runs on a video doesn’t mean that content creator necessarily condones the product being sold. They may in fact be completely against the product and the reason the ad is being run on their channel is that they have spoken out against the product in one or more of their videos. It is importantly to be aware that as content creators once you agree to monetization you are given 0 choice about the nature of the ads that are put on it by RUclips.’

I make drone related content, and like to toss "royalty free" music over flight footage even though I'm not monetized. I use Motion Array as my one stop shop for graphics, templates, as well as music and recently got a copyright claim from music I used from there. It was an ordeal appealing this but managed to get this resolved in the end after quite a bit of back and forth. I was mainly mad that music that was supposed to be "royalty free" caused such a big headache.

Hi, I have a small youtube channel that analyses classical music with notations in the score. Sometimes I receive copyright claims saying that I am allowed to use the audio but as the channel is not monetized yet (almost there), I don't know if the earnings will go to the owner of the audio or to me as it is an analysis pedagogic video.
If I receive a copyright claim, should I argue that even though the algorithm detected that audio as someone else's (usually a record label) it shouldn't have a claim because it is an analysis? So I can get some money for my work in the future. Thank you!

What about audiobooks that appears on RUclips are they not monetized? They are basically reading the whole book using AI voice. Is that considered adding value since the book is a different media than a video.
Also, I have seen many anime/manhwa/manhua comics that use AI voices that read the speech bubbles but add descriptions to non speech panels. They use 3 secs clips of a specific panels that change throughout the whole chapter. Are they going to have claims?

Having a channel that’s movie related, if my content gets flagged, it always starts as a “copyright claim”, which can range from “no impact” to “blocked everywhere”. My rule of thumb is that it doesn’t hurt to file a dispute, but if that gets rejected, I don’t appeal the claim, because there’s the risk of a strike. Not always, but it’s a possibility. So in these cases, I just make that video exclusive on my Patreon. One last thing - if you do get a strike, RUclips allows it to be removed in 90 days if you complete a few questions called “Copyright School” or something like that.

  • @GranCanariaUncovered

Yes we get copyright claims on most of our videos, sometimes a dozen or more on a 30 mins video. We live in a major tourist destination and record beach parties, carnivals and nightlife mainly, and people love to watch it. We don't add any copyrighted material to our videos, whatever is recorded and published is whatever is happening. You know, it's reality. DJs play music but we have no control over that. Yet it is impossible to publish a video in any meaningful way without the background audio because the paeople who are partying are reacting, dancing, singing etc. If it was possible to replace the original audio we would love to but we need to replace it in a way that has beats, breaks etc in exactly the right places. Is that even possible to do? With three of us recording on an event there is probably six hours recording and then maybe 10-12 hours editing to make one video. We should not be expected to do all that work for nothing, How to solve this?

7:15 Just a note for folks, when Jen talks about aggressive copyright enforcement due to a song playing in public for a few seconds, it's important to note that industry strongarm tactics and weaponization of platform policies and the legal system are NOT the same is being a violation of the law. What she is describing is actually legal and protected in the DMCA under a concept of "Ephemeral Use" and would be a loser for the party issuing the claim if it went to court.

I recently mentioned a film and showed a few clips from the trailer with muted audio while narrating some educational and personal development commentary on top of it. 5 films were highlighted in total. One studio chose to place a copyright claim on my video. That doesn’t sit well with me. Needless to say, I will never mention an A24 film ever again to help market it. A word of advice to some of these companies…Don’t get in the way of your own potential for success! Content creators are your friends; not your enemies. I trimmed out the film to their own detriment and not mine because I was still able to get my point across with the other films. Bottom line: Don’t be bullied around by these companies. And to those unscrupulous companies that try; karma always wins in the end! 😉

Is this acceptable? If I go from one scene to another (studio to outside) in my video, can I play the old style batman TV show spinning logo in between? That's literally maybe 3 seconds and in the show was the transition. What about just the sound and not the video of these items?

I've had a few videos where I got a Copyright claim for what personally I think is fair use. Simply music playing from my car either while driving or even at camp while I am cleaning up the campsite before I set up. It is generally not loud but can be faintly heard in the background. This is music I was listening to through Spotify or a CD, both of which I have paid for and is simply in my opinion background noise in these videos. Even another where I was at a 4wd show and one of the stands had music playing that was picked up on camera and I got a Copyright Claim for it, that is not a situation where I had the ability to turn the music down or off. Otherwise when using music deliberately in my videos, all the tracks come from the RUclips Audio Library.
Also I found this video a little strange, You both talk about music being used but the lawyer talks mostly about videos, I feel they would have different regulations.

We were told that if RUclips can detect music in the background, they could shut us down. We do pay a small fee each year to a couple of music licensee companies that is supposed to cover us for playing music on our facilities. We don't know exactly how it works, as we have never been challenged. If its just background music will RUclips shut us down? If so, what do we need to do to make sure we are good to go?

I run a movie channel where I use movie clips, and I didn't have any issues with copyright claims before. But this year, I've been getting claims one after another, even on videos that are two years old, and it's hurting my revenue. Can I dispute these claims and possibly win, or is it risky? I don't want to end up with a strike.

What about tarot/ divination card readers that use other peoples decks for messages and show the cards and read the booklet messages included ? There are many channels including mine- it is a whole niche of people doing this that make money off of it - Is that a copyright issue?

I’ve been using free music provided in my video editing app as background music, but they’ve been a few times that a copyright claim came up some time after I posted the video. The notice did say that the owner allows the music to be used. What does that mean? I’m not monetised yet, but the way

Oh, I've gotten claimed plenty of times. I honestly and truly do not care if I do, as long as it doesn't evolve into a strike.
Yes, I used your content. Yes, I will do so in the future. I likely used it because it's relevant, funny, or it adds depth, commentary, or context to what I'm talking about or doing. I don't care that you're taking revenue for that content because IT'S YOUR CONTENT. Get paid, King. I'll get mine when it's my turn.

I got a copyright claim on an audio clip used from CapCut. The details say the owner allows the audio to be used on RUclips. Should i remove this music from the video or is it okay to stay?

What a coincidence. I just sent someone a claim. Was taken off very quickly. This creator recycled other people's videos and was smart enough to tag them. Lazy and stupid. Insult to people who do work hard to create content. Great video. vidIQ is the best to grow your channel

I got a copyright on my black ops 1 videos because of little music snips, but it says its allowed. Its pretty famous music, so when is it not allowed? Has it something to do with it being a game?

Got a few claims one that I ignore cause I don't care if I get paid
Ones I fought because the content was public domain and won
Ones I fought back because I owned the content and after proving my legal ownership won

I just got a strike the other day over the viral Hawk Tuah video. The original channel that posted it is trying to come after anyone it can over it. They want as much money in there pocket as possible and don't want any attention taken away from there video, I should have done more commentary on top of it.

I think there is fake copyright claims because one of my videos has this owner name that ends with _CS. I found on reedit that stands for Copyright Spam. Should I be concerned about this, and what can I do?
