    • @andrewkandasamy
      @andrewkandasamy 2 года назад +5

      Chop Box from earlier comment I think has an excellent breakdown on this with the point that these categories of characters relate to their narrative purpose. (Why they're in the story.) To summarize:
      Exploration - The character is in the story as a method by which the reader explores a location, a phenomenon, or a concept.
      Inspiration - The character is in the story in order to demonstrate certain character traits.
      Everything else from here on is me:
      Aspiration - The character has a goal that they are pursuing and the reader is along for the ride.
      As Branden Sanderson mentions at the end most characters are some combination of these three things. Harry Potter for example in order of prevalence is exploration, inspiration, aspiration. The biggest draw of the Harry Potter series to many readers is the "what-if" world it creates and exploring it (through Harry). After that the story is mostly about him being a courageous and loyal person. The overarching theme of the series is Harry aspiring to overcome the main antagonist and establish a normal life for himself, but that's more just sort of there to provide a definable plot.

  • @CharroArgentino
    @CharroArgentino 3 года назад +4

    Don't overthink that much about structures, "aspiration, inspiration, exploration" is cataloging characters in a way that limits them too much. Even if you could argue that every single character can fall into them, you'll find that many would be a little bit of a, bit of b, and a lot of c, because just like everything, things work in spectrums, trying to give everything a specific tag creates more problems that it resolves, you're limiting yourself by trying to structure your characters that much.

    • @andrewkandasamy
      @andrewkandasamy 2 года назад +1

      That's his point at the very end. He very explicitly states that most characters are some combination of those three traits although generally one is primary with regards to narrative at a particular point in the story.
