- Who is Herne the Hunter?
A ghostly figure from Windsor Forest, Herne stands at the crossroads of ancient archetypes and modern myth. Linked to the European Wild Hunt, Herne’s roots may stretch back to Woden, Odin, Cernunnos, King Herla and Gwyn ap Nudd, blending Celtic and Germanic traditions.
Shakespeare immortalised him in The Merry Wives of Windsor, and yet sightings of this spectral huntsman persist to this day.
Join me as we delve into the lore of Herne the Hunter, his murky ties to pagan gods, psychopomps, chthonic kings and the Wild Hunt, and his modern role as the guardian spirit of the forest.
Along the way, we’ll explore myths, folklore, and my own encounters in Windsor Forest when I was a part of the Runnymede Eco Village in 2015.
Is Herne a forgotten deity, a modern ghost, or something else entirely?
