How to Make Compost Tea FREE Organic Plant Food to Grow Lots of Vegetables Garden Fertilizer Station
#composttea #gardening #containergarden
To get buckets not get stuck into each other, place rocks or something into the bottom bucket. Makes top bucket slide out easier.
I put my leaves, etc in one of those small mesh laundry bags I got from the $ store and let that sit in the bucket of water. There are 3 bags in the package so that works for 3 buckets. Later, just refill the bags with new leaves and dump the old ones in a tote with plants.
Sounds perfect!
That’s my next project! Compost tea/yay. Thanks Robbie for all your advice! 13:00
This is why I like your channel, you recycle, reuse and it’s good for the plants and your pocketbook. Thank you for sharing!
👍
I absolutely love comfrey. I have it all over my garden and yard. I tuck it in places where I need to reduce the weed pressure. The comfrey will take over and block the weeds. I can harvest comfrey about 4 to 5 times a year in my growing zone, Northeast Oklahoma 6B winter and 8A summers. Not only do I make compost tea, I feed the comfrey to my chickens, who absolutely love it, and I make and sell comfrey salve. It brings in more pollinators than almost any other plant in my garden.
Hi little Kitty! Your so adorable!💞
Oh my goodness! You are a fountain of inspiration and ideas! I would not have thought to make it a two-system, but that does seem a lot less messy. And now I know I can feed the "leftovers" to my tree.
Oh Yes 😊 Thanks ❤️
I love seeing the bunnies in your garden. They look so happy and grateful for the garden. And they fertilize the garden with their droppings😻🥰😘❤️
It's funny. I just did this. I noticed that my garden was in a slump. So I took some compost tea I made from green leaves and banana peel and watered the garden just yesterday. I noticed that today I saw my okra grew and is starting to branch out and everything looks greener and healthier. So I also saw some mushrooms growing in my soil (which indicates that I have good soil). So, instead of wasting the mushrooms, I tossed it into the leftover compost tea. I've done it before and like Mushroom Compost, the plants love it. So I watered today with my Green Leaf, Banana Peel & Mushroom compost tea and everything is pretty happy out there. I left the mushrooms to steep in the leftover compost tea for another day. I need to try your hole in the bucket method. It would make bypassing the gunk easier.
It sounds like your garden is doing wonderful, and like you found using some compost tea seems to many times work overnight. Thanks for sharing take care.
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Yes, it did. My okra had slowed down production. I woke up the next morning and it had grown a whole other section overnight after using the green leaf and banana peel compost tea. So it definitely works.
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Robbie, Robbie, Robbie I love you! You are brilliant! I tried stinging nettle cuz I mentioned no collard or kale and omg! Out of 6 zucchini plants I now have 4 zucchinis growing! A couple Zucchinis would try n grow but they stayed small, turned yellow n would rot off. I did the hand pollinating as you mentioned n with the tea, I have 4 green 5 inchers lol! Thank you!
Is it ok to use compost tea on houseplants and can you add eggshells for composting? Thanks.
@@lauritaamidar5309 Egg shells take a while to break down. You might want to just collect them, bake them in the oven to kill any infectious bacteria, powder them in a grinder and add the powder to the plants.
So clever. I will be doing this. And may I add, what a treasure the comment section is! So much shared knowledge.
I love how you share with the bunnies and don’t freak out.
Every time I see Kitty, I hit the LIKE button. Kitty is so adorable!
Robbie, I love your videos💕 New subscriber 😃 Thank you for this valuable information 🙏 I’m 54 years old and a total beginner in gardening, so needless to say your videos are a life saver 😘 Many blessing to you💕
Keep watching and I know you will do fine 😊
Thank you Robbie for all your valuable information. I am a 70 year old live in La Manzanilla,Mexico seasonally and an advanced woodworker who has set up home shop down here . I have limited space to garden and have used your ideas to develop a 3 tiered container unit on wheels that any city dweller can utilize if they have a deck or flat accessible rooftop. I am amazed at my productivity and love your compost ideas. I waste nothing and think if I add grow lights ,retractable screens and a drip setup it will double the seasonal usage. Next I’m going to build a railing around the deck that can have all sorts plant life . I’ve also been using strainers to build my own cement planters . Just unlimited and thanks to you ❤
Jim S.
I've seen gardener made compost tea, but you make it so easy that makes me wanna start to make it again..thanks for your inspiration..hope you always success in gardening
There are minerals in the brown leaves. Great for the compost.
I appreciate your positive attitude and money saving tips. Thank you!
This is my favorite RUclips channel! I get more excited about a new Robbie snd Gary video than any other channel I subscribe to!
Since every neighbor in my neighborhood uses roundup on their lawns I can’t use leaves and branches from my yard because their chemicals come over here. I know because I don’t use chemicals and I have very few weeds in my yard. So I buy turnip greens and collard greens from the grocery and add them with my few scraps to make mine. Thank you for all you have taught us. And now here is another one of your brilliant ideas. I had been using a tiny strainer to strain my compost tea! Thank you Robbie!
What a great idea. Until it gets cool enough to plant some brassicas a trip to the grocery store is now necessary,
Ask the grocery manager what he does with the green trimmings, because he might give them to you. In the grocery store they do have a lot of waste and those usually get tossed out. But that’s a great idea what you’re doing. Take care
Hey those greens are good to eat! Chop up bacon, Hal cook in frying pan , add washed beet; turnip , mustard, collard , kale greens or combination, salt & pepper, dash of soy sauce & eat ,delicious!!😊
I love how colorful your chair garden is. It is "happy" like you are!
I live on one acre and just can't afford to buy fertilizers. Have been experimenting with compost teas. Love your two bucket system. I can add those 5 gallon buckets all over my gardens!!!!
You got it you can fertilize your land with those 5 gallon buckets with the compost perfect 😊❤️
Thank you Robbie. I have been feeding my plants once a week with the compost tea with good results but my plants are slowing down mid-summer. I will feed them as much a possible now since I know that I will not "burn" them and get more buckets to add to my "feeding station". The two-bucket-system is what I need.
This two bucket system just seems cleaner and easier to work with I sure like it. I hope you do too when you try it. Thanks so much take care
You and David the Good must be related. He makes the same brew, known as Dave's Fetid Swamp Water. He found out that the Koreans have been doing this to feed their plants for centuries! It's simply anaerobic composting that is bursting with fertility. Just remember to keep the lid on! 😁 ~ Lisa
This is brilliant...especially during this fertilizer shortage time. I'm going to give this a try Robbie. Thank you so much! Your videos always make me smile and educate me a bit more!
LOVE the idea about using a colander to sift out the plant debris!!! I do this too Robbie. I use weeds from the garden in mine, and it works just as great! Thanks for sharing.
I’m so glad you said that, I wondered if I could use weeds!
I'd think there's an abundance of nutrients in weeds as they're so persistent. I'll use what I have in abundance after monsoonal rains in San Diego but no collards🤗
I have a shrub and thought it was dead so I tried this fertilizer and in about three days there were leaves again!!! Thank you!!!!! ❤️
Thank you Robbie. I don't have collard or kale but I do have tons of nettle and burdock. Going to experiment lol.
I luv this "colander" method...kinda like a salad spinner! Robbie mine is drawing FLIES😝😝😝DEFINATELY NEED TO KEEP COVERED TIGHT👍👍👍
Here's the thing, make it, use it all up, leave the bucket empty that is no water, and start to add in some leaves, in about a week, start over with water, and do more in a week or soon.
I watched your earlier compost tea video so I have compost buckets everywhere in my back yard. Every time my husband (he is city boy) go back he says our back yard smell like manure😜🤣
😂🤣🌱💩
Bless your hubby's cotton-socks Lol 😂. Im sure he just Loves your organic produce - so Yum!! Enjoy a Blessed Bountiful Blissful Week 🕊️🌿🕊️
Then just make it, use it up, and keep the bucket dry until you want to make more, no smell at all, or you can use it within 2 days too before is starts to smell, should still have great stuff in it for the plants. Win Win, everyone happy, take care
@@iri3977 He Loves to showing off my garden to his friends!
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Thank you Robbie!
This is great! I've been doing this for over a year in a 30-gal garbage can with a lid. I add grass clippings every time I mow, plus all food/plant scraps. I have also added some Black Kow manure to the mixture when I first started. I never empty the can, I just top it off with water when needed. I stir it regularly also.
Oh great I can use food scraps. Awesome
Oh I also throw oranges and lemons and apples things like that in there is that okayjust anything that we eat that's rottening that's what I throw in my compost and thank you again for your help. 💗😊🙏
I learned this from you also. I used it only on my melons and my Marigolds exploded. Each tote (learned from you). 😊 I had one planted in each tote. So I used it 1.5 weeks ago on every plant. Even my Lavendar that I always kill. EVERY SINGLE plant has new growth on them. Thank U!!!!
That’s brilliant Robbie! Thank you for sharing you experienced and knowledge with us.
I expect this technique can be used for anything like roses, trees, bushes as well. Even for people with tiny gardens.
This is terrific! Thank you Robbie 👍🏻♥️😊
Absolutely, most any plant can get benefits from this method, Thanks
I do something similar with all the dead leaves and weeds from my garden. But I like the idea of the "stations"!! I have little gardens and tote gardens all over my front, side, and back yards. Stations will come in handy!! I get the best tips from you!
True
Love your enthusiasm. Just starting to plant vegetables in my small patio. You've been very helpful. Thank you!
Robbie, no wonder I didn't get roots in my beets or carrots after several months!
I finally pulled them up and cooked the healthy LEAVES. Tasty, though.
Yes it’s funny that it works that way the root stock Vegetables don’t need that much. Take care
I love beet greens cooked like Spinach. I love Spinach, But like beet greens even better 😋 YUM
I was just looking at all the male flowers on my pumpkin vine. I am definitely gonna do this. Thanks Robbie! 😎
It’s worth a try it doesn’t cost anything hope you get lots of female flowers soon. Take care thanks 🌻
Wish I had seen this a couple of months ago. I noticed my zucchini plants didn't have many female flowers on it. Now it is too cold for much of anything....except, of course, making compost tea. Thanks so much for this information.
I do this because of you! I need to create more stations. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and beautiful gardens 💜
Thank you so much for letting me know have a great day 😊❤️
Been waiting on this video. You said Gary does his different. Sure would like to see his method too and if you see a difference. I know you both are busy so if you find time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Awesome idea! I make my own tea like you in a big trash can. Yes, I have to sift out the leaves to get to the tea, which you know can be time consuming. I like the double bucket idea! I will be making some changes this week! Thx for the tip. Love your gardens!💕
I picked up some icing buckets at Sam's bakery and they came with lids. I was going to use them for planters but I have just built 4 elevated garden boxes so I'm only using the white icing buckets to catch rain water. I'll drill holes into some and use the two bucket system. My okra can really use the tea right now.
Hi Lisa. Would you please explain your method with trash cans and leaves? Do you use brown or green leaves? Do you fill with water and let sit for how long? TIA!
I love this video and I adore the brick flower bed Gary made you
I started making compost tea two weeks ago. Been using it on my scotch bonnet pepper plant within two weeks flowers have been blooming and the peppers have been growing like crazy
Robbie, you're absolutely amazing, and thank you for this tip! Also I want to share a lifechanging hack with you (so I hope you'll see this and let me know the results), if you don't want the compost tea to smell, just add a little bit of basalt dust, maybe half a cup or so. It absorbs the smell and adds more minerals to the compost tea.
This is very interesting, and can be expensive to purchase for me, and I read that some basalt can have some asbestos in it. So it’s nice to know, but I think for now I’m fine with the way my compost tea is the plants love it as Nature creates it, natural, I don’t think I wanna add much else to it but thank you for the tip.
I love your yorkie
'That's what I'm takin' about". I've been scooping like you have been doing for years, but, that's going to be over now that I see your two bucket system! 03:39
Yes this two bucket system works so much easier for me I hope it works great for you too thanks so much
Now I know what to do with all those Dandylion Plants in Spring, Just in time for making compost Tea!
This is great Robbie! Thank you for this! An easy addition to the totes garden being put together! 🌱🕊️🌹
Bonus! Now I know why my root vegetables aren't doing as well as they should or could have! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Diane from Cape Town, S Africa ...so thrilled you also grow veg in buckets.
Thanks for sharing. ❤️❤️❤️
I like ur pyramid of buckets
Thank you so much 😊
😊💕 Robbie your such a blessing to me and truly appreciate all that you do to share your knowledge! Much love
Thank you SO much!!!
We love free!! Thank you so much for this video!
Free is always good 😊
I finally made one! I still haven't put pitchers in my planters, so I figured I could do this for now.
Love this Robbie. I’m definitely going to make compost tea. My peppers need a little fix, they just aren’t growing that big. You are my inspiration. I always wanted to plant what I eat but was unsure of the correct process. That’s why I love your channel. You are a God send. Bless you for sharing your skill, especially during this difficult time we’ve all been having.❤️🤗 Thanh you, thank you, thank you! Totally appreciate you.
I made this kale and collard green leaves tea, it stinks after a week... 🤣, i watered the plants when it was raining, so nobody can smell it. Great!
I have weeds and veggie leaves in a 32 gallon garnage bin. I love the idea to use the colander to drain the leaves out! How I missed that in my first viewing I don't know? So it's always good to watch more than one time!!! You give us so much useful info each time!!!!
I'm just starting out I planted seed yesterday but I can't wait to see the progress, thanks for sharing.
Good idea for a scooper, I am gonna make some like that
i love your pyramid of planters … i have a small front garden and that seems like the perfect way to stack my pots.
I love them, works great, thanks
😳smart woman👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
If you don't want anything going through the holes put you some of your tool in the bottom of it you know the fabric that you keep the bugs and the deer and the squirrels off of your sometimes I even take some of that stuff and make a little bag out of it and dip it down in there in the water and then wait a little you know two or three weeks and then pull it out of the water
I love it! A Tulle Teabag! 8-)
I know exactly what you’re talking about making a teabag, but for me I’m looking for less work so I’m not gonna bother with it the little bit to get through the holes is perfectly fine it’s added fertilizer for my plants. I have done that before too. Thanks so much
Mesh bag that holds onions wd work - stuff leaves in that & steep
That is a great idea and a great way to make compost tea , I have learned a lot from these garden channels , thank you
THANK YOU, ROBBIE!!!!!!!!
You are so welcome thank you
Hi Robbie, thanks for this! I stopped your video part way through and ran outside to get my leaves in a tall tree plant pot and stuck it in a bucket with some water. Can't wait to see the results. Someone just posted that they added banana leaves. Is that a problem? I would love to do that cause my son eats a banana a day so there's lot of peels.
It's night while I'm reading this or I would start some compost tea as well lol :)
I love your eco gardening, I am in the south east of England, but so may ideas I can use. Thank you x
you know what? i do same, and this compost tea is very powerful. it really worked
You are so crafty.
I think I'm going to try this with some of weeds, too. Instead of throwing out all of my weeds. I can put some of them in a bucket. With the cover, I don't think the weeds will keep growing in the bucket.
You can also put weeds in the water compost tea. Learned that from an English gardener
Oh yes, we have videos on that. You can add sow Thistle, stinging nettles all kinds of weeds in there as well.
I use my weeds.
I am back looking so I can set up my garden and get a good garden this year.
Thank you, thank you so much for the video! So informative and cost effective! Greatly appreciate the knowledge. Great video. 😊
Awesome video ! Love you ! I had grown so much lettuce this year I gave 10 people my lettuce ! Now it’s done ! ❤😔 but planting more for a a new crop ! It’s on the cooler side of house. Which is great ! Some sun but cooler side !
I really like this channel a lot. Thank you 😊💞....can we use yellowed leaves from any other of our plants and if so, which ones of theres no collard available for the moment?
Green tree leaves? I had a tree come down in storm ...I was going to compost but I like the tea idea
This is SO COOL! If I’m using self watering Garden Patch planters, should I add straight composting tea from this method or should it be diluted with more water?
Great information!! Thank you so much!
You are so welcome! Thank you
We do the same I also add my morniga leaves to ours and some time weeds
Sounds great!
I was thinking of using moringa for this. How does it work?
You are amazing you’ve given me hope, I can do this
Go for it!
Oh I've been putting any kind of vegetable in there and eggshells and coffee grounds and tea bags all that kind of stuff in one bucket and water and using that for my compost tea and my water to water my plants.
Thank You thank you I have been watching all these complicated how to and rules to follow compost tea videos and you are just a God sent ! And also your the first to mention tree bark .. that was my main question if it can be used. Your videos are just so motivating… 😊👍
Learning so much ! Thank you and I love the frugal way you garden 🥰👍
It does smell but it is the best I swear my plants grow inch and new leaves the next day , thank you
I love your ideas Robbie!! I am making compost tea right now!!! I have flower pots. I love your idea of compost tea stations.
🙏💕 Thank you Robbie 💕🙏
Just discovered your channel. Very entertaining and you make your style of gardening sound like great fun. Subscribed.
And I love the bricks Gary made. Thank you for the videos.
I'm definitely going to do this. Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing... hello from Indonesia ... I will make the compost tea in a bottle tomorrow and sharing it with my mom😊
Great idea Robbie, I'm going to make this tomorrow!!!! Thank you for sharing.
I really appreciate all the tips (from diff videos). Thanks
Hi Robbie and Gary, I have just joined you page and have fruit very informative. My question is, have you done a video on companion planting to keep the insect pest under control?
For how many days do I have to brew it? Does it go bad if I leave it for a long time? Let’s say a week or two? I put some collards in water last week, came to Florida for vacation and I forgot the compost tea!! 😳 Do you think is still good? Thank you Robbie 🙏😘
Hi, I'm new to your channel and I already love it! I live in an apt in New York. I'm growing turmeric, peppers, mint and I even planted an avocado tree all in pots.
One question, how long do I leave the leaves in the water before I can use it?
Thank you for all your tips. 🤗
I dont have much growing in my garden to collect leaves from, can i use dandilion leaves or other weed leaves?
Yeah. You are straining out the weeds with their seeds.
Jean-yus! Thanks.
Great idea for a two bucket system.
I just love your videos ❤. We are gardening for the first time because of you and have four containers started so far. I was wondering if we can start this method using some old lettuce and spinach leaves since we have nothing else available right now? Thank you for sharing so much Robbie. Your enthusiasm is amazing and contagious ❤
I have the same yorkie
😊❤️
I’m so glad that you explained how to do this and what it’s good for. I only had half of it right yet still didn’t know what to do with it 😂 Now I do. Thanks so much Robbie
I'm wondering can we use weeds? I don't have any spare leaves for compost because I have a small garden and no brasicas. Thanks Robbie love you guys 💚🌱
Weeds, grass and wood chips can be used to make tea for your plants
Been thinking of using a bucket system to make a wormery.
