I find it funny that people say things like, “what does this have to do with Christmas?” In all reality, what do any of our traditions have to really do with Christmas? There were no lights or even a tree to decorate when Jesus was born. I do this because it brings families together to enjoy something for free while raising thousands of dollars for those who are need. Jesus said, “if you love me, obey my commands.” He told us to help those in need - and that’s why I do it and that’s what I think Christmas is really about.
Since 99% of the lights are LEDs, the electricity to run the show for the entire month is about $100. I sequenced the show using LOR, mixed the music/sound effects with Digital Performer, and filmed it using a 35' lift :) This is now my second year decorating. I built all the props using wood, metal, acrylic and corrugated plastic. I am a music/teacher director for a living (COVA Conservatory in Oakland and Centerville Presbyterian Church in Fremont), hence the massive instruments! If you look closely (especially during the Cantina song) the instruments are playing the real notes! Although the beams are powerful up close, they are a small percentage of real searchlights and are so widely dispersed that by the time they are up in the sky, they don't interfere with aircraft etc. The guitar is 17', the piano is 19' and the drums are standard. About 12,500 channels running around 100,000 lights. Merry Christmas everyone!

I live just a block down from this house! He had been doing this for a couple of years, but when he added Star Wars, it went BOOM! I just wanna say how much I appreciated being able to watch this during the Christmas holidays. It was such a joy, and a pleasure. Also, it was great seeing how many thousands of people came to our little neighborhood in Newark, CA just to watch it too! This man and his family brought so much joy to so many people.
To bad he's not doing it again this year :(

Christy Hamrick It's in Newark, California. It's a fairly small city that almost nobody knows about, as it is surrounded by the city of Fremont, so people think it's Fremont. Anyway, I don't think he's going to do his lights this year. Last year, he started setting up before Halloween, cuz as you'd imagine.... this is a huge setup. It's now a month before Christmas and not a single light is in sight :(

LEDs use less power than incandescents for the same light output. But that does not necessarily mean that they're low-power devices. A display like this would definitely cause a spike in the homeowner's power bill.

The lights, or the music? We actually don't use speakers, we have FM transmitters, people listen through their car radios.
The neighbors actually love it and most come out every night. I went out of my way to avoid hitting their houses with light as well as flight paths from the local airports. I also run a radio station so people can listen in their cars, and if traffic gets bad, I help direct it so they can easily get in and out of their homes :)

He actually moved to Tracy and is no longer in Newark. I'm from San Jose as well and it will be a longer drive now but is well worth it.

Best light show I've seen hands down. No joke.
Love it! But I have a really dumb question. Do the lights on the top of the house bother planes? I know, I know but I have always wondered that.
I work with lighting fixtures like that, and while if they were to look down they would definitely see them on the roof, at the altitude that planes are at they would not be "beams" anymore, they aren't THAT powerful.
+Cody soberski But what if you are in the major flight paths of 2 major airports and there are low flying planes coming in for a landing?
Wouldn't those moving spotlights then become an issue if you are within 5-10 mile radius of the landing patterns in those airport flight paths?
I would think they would and could be an issue if in close proximity to airports.
And they could even pose an issue for law enforcement helicopters that may be flying low searching for someone with their own spot/searchlight in the area if that need arose.
I love the way they look, but my being in the landing zones of 2 airports, I think they'd cause me more issues than I'd like, especially since planes do fly very low in the flight paths over my home!
+Key Lock potentially! I don't know enough about airplanes or airports. But these aren't the same kind of lights that casinos use outdoors. Those are far more powerful than what this guy has on his roof. I cant say for sure, but it's probably within legal restrictions.
