Argentina, On this day it's raining, now I take the guitar and play this beautifull song, that' take my soul and giveme tranquility, in a place like Peace, I missed so much the old times, tanks Marty for this song
It's funny...the older I get, the more the meaning of this song reveals itself to me. Marty probably didn't realize it when he wrote it, but he created a love song with remarkable depth to it.
Held my 16 year old dog in my arms as he passed away, with this performance playing on repeat for hours until the sun rise. As I get older, I don't connect with Slicks party songs anymore. Martys songs are so beautiful, and the meanings of them start to flower with age. RIP Teddy(my dog). RIP Marty Balin
This is the song I thought of when I heard that Marty Balin had died. It meant so much to me when I first heard it when I was 17 years old, and this version rings true as well all these years later.
He painted a picture with his songs that made them resonate through your soul. This one brought me through some dark times in my life. He had a wonderful heart.
Such a masterpiece and not his only one- Marty has such a stile. This arrangement is most endearing. I can't listen to this song- oh in all these years, without being moved by it, sometimes to tears. I've stopped suddenly still, when this song has come on, unable to move, for being so moved. 50 years? Youth come back to me. Beautiful
My gods. This song has been breaking my heart for a half-century. How on earth did I only now discover this version? It's been up for 3 years. I don't make "best" lists-don't believe in 'em. But if I did....
We love you Marty. You blessed us with your music and your voice -- and may you be blessed as you go home to eternity, your Haight Ashbury in the skies. Peace, singer, rest...
The summer had inhaled and held its breath too long The winter looked the same, as if it never had gone And through an open window where no curtain hung I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me One begins to read between the pages of a look The shape of sleepy music, and suddenly you're hooked Through the rain upon the trees, that kisses on the run I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me You can't stay and live my way Scatter my love like leaves in the wind You always say you want to go away But I know what it always has been, it always has been A transparent dream beneath an occasional sigh Most of the time I just let it go by Now I wish it hadn't begun I saw you, yes I saw you, comin' back to me Strolling the hills overlooking the shore I realize I've been here before The shadow in the mist could have been anyone I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me Small things like reasons are put in a jar Whatever happened to wishes wished on a star? Was it just something that I made up for fun? I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
I have heard this and sung along with it more times than I could possibly count... but there is something about seeing and reading it all as a poem... thank you for sharing the lyrics in this way.
Whatever happened to wishes wished on a star... all those years ago, and how many more rivers are there yet to cross when there has been so much water under so many bridges on the path to here? So many years since I first heard your beautiful ballad, "Coming Back To Me," and yet here we are. It is very good to be here, and to hear you once again. Thank you, Marty Balin. Peace be with you.
I met&got Marty's autograph back in the 90's in Winstonsalem,NC at a small bar called Ziggy's!!He was so sweet&I could have fainted being right next to him!!This is my favorite song by Marty..
Before I got to the end of Marty's song, I realize that after all these years, the song speaks of me, coming back to myself, and us coming back to who we were. What time and fortune do, eh? I love you all
I bought my first and only Jefferson Airplane album (Surrealistic Pillow) as a child, the year it came out (1967)because I loved the song Somebody to Love. Of course, that opened my ears to some fantastic music, one of which was Coming Back to Me. Beautiful haunting song, timeless.
Thank you, Jefferson Airplane and Marty for this wonderful piece. It’s taken me for a long walk. I’m still learning, looking and feeling the beautiful light from this song and the absence of certain bliss.
I 1st heard this song in the movie "Indian runner" I was overwhelmed by its beauty it made that scene so strong I will never forget it. Songs like this really stays with you forever.
Powerful lyrics and perfect vocal delivery. Beautiful song. That standup bass is perfect. I would loved for Marty to have put this out there. Studio version It would have gone straight to number one. I miss Marty's spirit and his great love and inspiration. Thank you for posting this. Made my day.❤
I still see you Coming back to me & it's harder than leaves bound by a dusty book held in my hands, those first steps we took such a wonder now torn free I still see YOU Coming back to me But i saw you no longer seeing me Blown away paiges, bloody memories seeing you No longer seeing me coming back to me... after words ~ rest in peace
Figuratively grew up with this music. Not only a fan since "Pillow" but was fortunate enough to play "Balin Ballads" and J. Starship music many, many times on-air at a few SF radio stations in the 80's.
I 've listened to this for years . . . always moves me to tears. This is a great version . . . God bless Marty Balin . . . live music is ALWAYS best ! Like many of my favorite songs, over time the meanings have changed many times, from the lost girl friend, or other friends . . . this has become about me. I see myself coming back to being myself again, NOT the person I became but the original me . . . you can never go home again or find what you've lost, past is past, done, but you can go back to being yourself . . . correcting wrongs that you've done and becoming whole, with in yourself again . . . and "whatever happened to wishes wished on a star ? " PEACE, LOVE to you all . . .✌
I still have this original album, 'Surrealistic Pillow', that I purchased in the record store in 1967 when I was just 13 years old. The price I paid for the newly released album then was $2.50 ($.75 for 45rpm singles). Also still have original release of the lushly illustrated 'After Bathing at Baxter's' I purchased in Nov. 1967. Stunning that both these albums were written, recorded and released in the same year just 10 months apart! Saw the Airplane perform at Winterland and Fillmore West auditorium in the late '60's. Listened to a shocked and teary Grace Slick stop the show mid-set during live Airplane performance in the Fillmore and announced to a stunned & disbelieving audience that the band had just got word that their good friend "Janis Joplin is dead!" - Joplin had just been found deceased in LA an hour earlier. I saw Joplin perform live with Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 doing a free outdoor concert in Golden Gate Park just months before signing their first recording contract. Yes, the beautifully enduring lyrics of this ballad has always been a lifelong treasured favorite of mine, swinging me back to those heady, hazy wonderfully free-loving days/daze of San Francisco '60's music scene!
My formative rock listening years were the 70s (born in 61), so while I was familiar with Airplane music, I grew up buying, listening to Starship. And that would be for a few decades. But the holder I’ve gotten, the more I love and prefer the Airplane’s songs. They’re so much deeper, heartfelt, and visual. Marty in particular seems more entirely involved in the songs, the music itself. I’ve always been the one of my group who had more Jefferson music in my blood. A metal friend of mine stopped by my house early 80s, while I was jamming to “Come Up the Years”, and his reaction was, “Gee! That’s lovely!”, very sarcastically. I’m currently into a real stroll through Airplane music, videos, interviews, and stories, about everything from the. Ands formation, to all that transpired since. I think the Jefferson Airplane is one of America’s defining chapters in so many ways.
...through the rain upon the leaves that kisses on the run... I heard this first ~ 50 years ago & it's still so fine. Now I'm in the Oregon temperate rain forest.
Marty (like Jorma) has hardly changed in over 40 years. Why am I the only one getting older here? I love seeing Marty play guitar. Don't think I've ever seen him play before. Very beautiful piece. I wanna visit FurPeaceRanch. I need me one of those GoFundMe pages :)
The back cover of the first album, _Takes Off_ shows him with his old Martin acoustic. On the studio recording of this song, on _Pillow_, he and Jerry Garcia play the acoustic guitars, along with Jack. Jorma and Paul weren't on that recording. Spencer was absent, too. Grace just played recorder.
Grace's recorder was a big part of the sound of that song. For someone who didn't play the instrument regularly, she was fantastic. Marty does sound good on this version, though, after all these years.
What's up with Martys' left thumb nail? Is he an ambidextrous picker? What a great version from the trio. Thank you FurPeace for this and the many wonderful posts ! A fan for ever.
Thé 60s. Thé most magical Era and décade for music.
This has always been one my favorite JA and Marty songs along with "Today." RIP Marty.
I feel the same. The other two masterpieces on Surrealistic Pillow.
Rest in Peace Marty. You wrote some of the most beautiful songs ever
And sang them the most beautifully, too.
..the best jefferson's song
Loved this guy, his song is just irreplaceable as he is.
Rickie Lee Jones does an amazing cover of this song. Worth a listen.
Argentina, On this day it's raining, now I take the guitar and play this beautifull song, that' take my soul and giveme tranquility, in a place like Peace, I missed so much the old times, tanks Marty for this song
nearly 50 years on, and it still brings a tear to my eyes like I was a young man again.
Yes
Miracles....one of the best most romantic songs sung by Marty, great voice
The song really opened my heart to some things in my past... so fragile & beautiful. From a such a profound time in our lives.
@@dougfrohman7130 Makes me cry for the sweetest parts of the past.
I cry every time I listen to it.

Thanks for writing one of the greatest love songs of all time
You will be missed
RIP Marty Balin. Such a masterful, Magical Music Man. A great loss in our Music Community
A tear in the corner of my eye for Marty and this magnificent song of youth
He painted a picture with his songs that made them resonate through your soul. This one brought me through some dark times in my life. He had a wonderful heart.
That’s sweet with the bass. Oh Marty, rest peacefully ...
Such a masterpiece and not his only one- Marty has such a stile. This arrangement is most endearing. I can't listen to this song- oh in all these years, without being moved by it, sometimes to tears. Beautiful
Me too, Katy! Tears in eyes right now.
Me too. Tears for 57 years. Never stopped being an awesome song. And I love the tenderness of this version sung by his older self..
My gods. This song has been breaking my heart for a half-century.
How on earth did I only now discover this version? It's been up for 3 years.
I don't make "best" lists-don't believe in 'em. But if I did....
My heart hurts for the loss of this poetic artist.
RIP Marty 💔
R I P Marty Balin thanks for the music
We love you Marty. You blessed us with your music and your voice -- and may you be blessed as you go home to eternity, your Haight Ashbury in the skies. Peace, singer, rest...
Fair seas and following winds be yours, Marty.
It has truly been a life, hasn't it.
Thank you for this, and so much more.
The summer had inhaled and held its breath too long
The winter looked the same, as if it never had gone
And through an open window where no curtain hung
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
One begins to read between the pages of a look
The shape of sleepy music, and suddenly you're hooked
Through the rain upon the trees, that kisses on the run
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
You can't stay and live my way
Scatter my love like leaves in the wind
You always say you want to go away
But I know what it always has been, it always has been
A transparent dream beneath an occasional sigh
Most of the time I just let it go by
Now I wish it hadn't begun
I saw you, yes I saw you, comin' back to me
Strolling the hills overlooking the shore
I realize I've been here before
The shadow in the mist could have been anyone
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
Small things like reasons are put in a jar
Whatever happened to wishes wished on a star?
Was it just something that I made up for fun?
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
I have heard this and sung along with it more times than I could possibly count... but there is something about seeing and reading it all as a poem... thank you for sharing the lyrics in this way.
I can't even sing along without crying...
I am leaking now, just listening again.

Beautiful read, and made me think. Thanks, Tim.
Thanks for a beautiful interpretation--opened my eyes to another, deeper meaning of this song.
Oh that is well said. And sending love to you also.
your comment made me cry .

I also bought this album very young in 1970 when I was 15 years old and I still keep it. greetings Lawrence
Thank you Marty ... eternally awesome ...
Marty Balin’s Comin Back To Me Is One Of My All Time Favorites
Beautiful. And if I miss Grace's recorder over the top, I hear it in my mind, coming back to me.
A masterpiece.
Loved you in high school...probably 67. I pray you are singing with the angels and Jesus!
