Been there- done that! And my radiator has a crack in the exact same place. I've tried patching it a couple of times with JB Weld, but the patch kept blowing off. I did have the same problem with the 4.0 engine I guess it's a common problem Good thing I caught it on time. Because overheating can kill the engine quick.
Obviously the relay was the main issue here but another thought I had was to make sure that clutch on the mechanical fan is fully engaging when hot, especially with that many miles on it (if it's original). In my experience they slip pretty good as they get older and most people never replace them. If the electric fan ever fails again, it would be good to know that at least the mechanical fan is pulling as much air as it should be.
Can’t argue with that. I have it a good look over - I usually check the play in it every oil change. Definitely would have been a good thing to mention

Well, I cut my hole but can’t get a tool down into it to remove the bolt from the relay. I’ve got a light, a flex mirror but can’t see anything holding the bolt. It won’t budge. Last time this went bad, I was traveling and the Jeep place charged me $600 to fix it. I got the part this time at Advance for $70.00 and am going to do it myself. Amazon has it for $20.00 but I wanted it today.
Because jeep put the relay underneath the damn bumper. The only way to get to it is to remove the bumper. So most if not all jeep owners cut a hole under the headlamp to access the relay. I’fl you’ve never seen a jeep Cherokee without a cut in the bumper like this under the headlamp, then the relay is original and has never been replaced. I’ve had 2 jeeps and both have that cutout. You can’t see it unless you remove the whole headlight.
What's up friend hey how did you know that was the problem? It gave you an error code or something, my fan does not turn on, I suspect that it may be that relay

Sounds like a leak in the heater core; another fun problem. Maybe (and probably), the hoses are leaking. I'd attempt adding some radiator stop-leak and see if that resolves the problem. If so, then there's probably a problem with the heater core and eventually you'll have to dig into it.
Wuss up thunderhead my auxiliary fan on my 03 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont turn off when my car is off and is causing my battery to be drained. I can hear it when my car is off. Do I change the relay switch???
Make sure you check your coolant temperature sensor !!, Because a lot of times we replace fans and everything else !!, and it could be something as small as that !! So make SURE !!, you check that sensor before spending all that money on a fan or a relay and on a new radiator !!, Just check the first . NO ?

The 2000 and up 4L had a thinner head casting, and are prone to crack. If it's leaking into the exhaust port, there is often no signs of a leak, but will loose a good amount of coolant per week of regular driving. You may need to replace the head... not that bad of a job. There a very easy engine to work on.

Like to ask you a question I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo I have water dripping in my flowboard right underneath my glove box also when I've been riding it and I come up to stop and I switch off it sounds like a big turbo fan is still running underneath my hood could you tell me what that is and what I could do about it Thanks
Sounds like a leak in the heater core; another fun problem. Maybe (and probably), the hoses are leaking. I'd attempt adding some radiator stop-leak and see if that resolves the problem. If so, then there's probably a problem with the heater core and eventually you'll have to dig into it.
Heater core.
Have you found metal wheels for that dremel?
Can you please send me the full details of Radiator fan wiring diagram so that I can fix it
Great joop , but if you have code 1489,1490 and the car won't start , dose it means fan realy ?
Wuss up thunderhead my auxiliary fan on my 03 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont turn off when my car is off and is causing my battery to be drained. I can hear it when my car is off. Do I change the relay switch???
Change the relay, it has stuck on most likely!
Multi-tools work better , just make sure you don’t dip the blade in too deep
Make sure you check your coolant temperature sensor !!, Because a lot of times we replace fans and everything else !!, and it could be something as small as that !! So make SURE !!, you check that sensor before spending all that money on a fan or a relay and on a new radiator !!, Just check the first . NO ?
You have a part number on that relay?
Just did the same exact thing, (3rd relay in about 8 yrs), worked for a day or 2 then back to overheating. Next, the thermostat.... Still overheating. Systematically replacing everything under the hood 😣 ???
I thinking to put a manually switch on it.
Is this same location for 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo?
I believe so - 99-2003, then 2004 was slightly different
does the 04 not have this relay
I did the same thing on “hoss “ 01 WJ 4.0
But when it got wet turn on it self.
On my 04 grand cherokee laredo 4.0 4x4 my blower motor. Stop. Fan and my turn signal but my hazards work.
I guess cutting it up would be faster than removing the whole plastic header
Great diagnosis thanks
Would this be the same on an 04 grand Cherokee that I'm having some overheating problems with?
Check your electric fan relay, the 04 only uses an electric fan
@@ThunderHead289 well I actually put in a clutch fan about a year ago once I was told my fan motor was shot. That seem to fix the problem until now. Sometimes is can idle for along time and keep a steady temp but then some days it gradually rises past 210.
Jeep changed the location of the e-fan relay on the 2004 grand cherokee(4.0). It's in the fuse box.
Very good video thanks for sharing!!!!!!
My mother owns a '04 4.7 V8 grand Cherokee and it has a pretty serious coolant leak but i cant for the life of me figure out where it is coming from, any tips?
The 2000 and up 4L had a thinner head casting, and are prone to crack. If it's leaking into the exhaust port, there is often no signs of a leak, but will loose a good amount of coolant per week of regular driving. You may need to replace the head... not that bad of a job. There a very easy engine to work on.
Easy way: use half, cup of black pepper
Jordan Lord ...Cotton Candy Randy!?? 👍🏼
@@KC-lg7tx Ha! I used that same method while driving back and forth from St. Louis to Denver when I was young and broke. Worked great in a pinch and easy to acquire at any truck stop.
@@KittyCatWalk haha, that's awesome to hear, i've only used it once to help seal my radiator till I could get a new one
My 2002 Grand Cherokee had the same problem. However the new relay won't work if I bolt it down. It will spark. The only way I can get it to work was to wrap it in electrical tape.
It’s a bad unit - like a dead short inside
I have the same problem. I cut the hole and there’s no relay there. On my 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The 04 has the relay under the hood over by the battery. It’s a plug in fuse style relay in appearance. Under a long rectangular cover
@@ThunderHead289 . Where is it on the 2000 grand cherokee Laredo??
@@ThunderHead289 Yes but when i had the relays tested they said they seems fine, but on Jeep.com they said relays can "test" ok but be "stuck"...? true? weird
Mine is an ‘03 and I was told my model didn’t have one behind the headlight - after I cut the hole looking for it. Still at a loss as to why it’s overheating at idle.
Did you try to cover the hole you made or is it ok to leave it?
coinman1972 I left it, upon closer inspection, it’s in no way a sealed section. When I used to do this at a dealer, we would simply tape it back on.
This is the exact issue I’m having with my 2001 JGC, after watching your video and was going to ask the very same question, what to do with the piece you cut out. If I can find a way to screw it back in somehow but I like the idea of the tape since I may never see it again.
Well, I followed the video instructions, cut into the body of the vehicle, replaced the switch and the fan works again! Yahhoooo!!!!
The only question in my mind is whether the engine was harmed when it overheated last Thursday after when wife was driving home from work and stop at the drive through at Jack in the Box, it really boiled all the coolant n water in the reserve tank and I had to put 2 gallons of water back in to limp it home...
So far, so good. I just pray really hard that everything is going to be just fine. Still praying to Buddha!
The relay on my 99 is in the engine compartment front left... in the long box.
Count yourself blessed
Mechanical clutch fan?????
Thank you
Have the same problem but I replaced the rely and fan still not working
Did you make sure that the fan itself works like I did in the video?
thermostat?
Remember the fan kicks in at a certain temperature. I went too a junk yard pulled out 3 relays for $15 first one I tried worked. Give that a go.
I JUST INSTALLED A FAN IN GOT NEW THERMOSTAT 01 4.0L JGC BUT WITH IT RUNNING I STILL GET HIGH TEMP READING GOT FULL COOLANT AND NEW COOLANT TEMP UNIT THEN WHY SO HOT
I have same problem what was the trick ?
nice job 👍
Think I got it though
To test the fan? Yes, I sure did - just random wires to test it indeed
I changed the relay and I'm still getting no power
screw the electric fan, install a clutch and mechanical fan, never a problem again...did it years ago....
It has a clutched fan. It actually has both
Unfortunately, my Jeep didn’t have one behind the headlight.
Must be a 2004
Actually, it’s a 2003, but it must have been when they first moved it to the fuse box, or so I was just told. I’ll check it out tomorrow.
My 2004 has a mechanical fan
My jeep does not have that really. Just the ones that are in the box
You have an 04 then
This video could’ve been done in about 2 minutes. Great info, too much talking
Just did a relay
i had replaced my coolant thermostat 2 weeks ago, not overheating anymore. 😜
Eli Green me too, and relay.. still overheating
Which degree? 180, 190 ????
@@user-22- . You might wanna think about ignition timing??
What if you replace that part and still wont work ?
Did you verify your actual fan works???
My 02 has double the miles
I somehow still have this jeep - now at 220k miles, it's my iowa winter driver only, still going along nicely
Blah blah. No useful information.
