    The only one missing sadly is Elena Naimushina :( A bizarre scenario whereby the Romanians performed the same exercise to totally different music. Apparently they could elect to choose different music but how you are supposed to compare a compulsory exercise set to music that uses different music alternatives that completely change the musical phrasing of the choreography is beyond me. I love Nadia, but Natalia Shaposhnikova here is truly stunningly beautiful!

    I really miss such grace in gymnastics. Can you imagine modern gymnasts performing this routine? I still watch gymnastics, but it's all about power now, less about choreography and elegance which is a shame❤xxx

    What a wonderful video! It's lovely to see the younger Romanians and East Germans, and even lovelier to see so many of these gymnasts work on their toes and really express music. If only we still had 1970s-style compulsories today...

    • @nogoodnameleft
      @nogoodnameleft 2 года назад +8

      Compulsories separated the top tier from the mediocre. It is such a shame that compulsories were abolished in 1997. Also it is a shame that starting in 1984 trampoline spring floors started to be used for the FX. These hard floor FX routines are so beautiful! The gymnasts today would be too scared to dare do FX on hard floors like 1980 Moscow and also they would never dare to balance beam routines on solid wood beams without any springs and padded coverings.

      @@nogoodnameleftBro, stop saying that. Moscow don't has a "hard floor", the springs was introduced at a major FIG event in 1979 Worlds championships and was used too in Chunichi cup 1978 and others minors competitions. And the springs are very important to prevent major injuries and help to gain height in the tumbling passes. It's possible doing a full twisting double back, triple twist, double tuck/pike/layout in a non spring floor, but, it's so dangerous to the knees and ankles, so, this decision in 1979 was a better thing to the healthy of gymnasts (male and female)

    Thanks so much!!!! Another treasure found, this is basically HD for 1980 and specially because of the boycott. The music difference can be to compensate the fact that in the Moscow Olympics was the first time that tape music was played! Before 1980 it was a pianist, a real pianist with a grand piano at the side of the floor. You can sometimes spot it on rare videos recorded by the audience; 72 Olympics videos showed it a lot. Also each country used to bring their own pianist and basically this created a different style, even so it was the same compulsory routine. Artistic gymnastics was really artistic in every detail, more than people realize.
    Nadia and Natasha was the two forces in the compulsory but Nadia was in a league on her own. Her BB performance was the one that got the 10 but honestly her FX was equally perfect. She hits all the boxes and all the ballet elements that they were looking, apart from the gymnastics moves. Her experience at this point shines here with her amplitude, confidence and control. Natasha shines with her flexibility, she was so good at this. Her splits where always hyperextended, and she was the best at it. I always found a shame that her optional BB did showed the splits like in the floor on the jumps, of course she had power handstand but still.
    Again thanks for this @floskate !!!

      Great comment. The 1980 Olympics were the first to use. taped music, but only for optionals. Compulsories still had a live piano player. You can see the piano behind Sylvia Hindorff at 17:06.

      Nadia was so good and thankfully she never had to perform competitively on trampoline spring floors. Her final tournament was the 1981 University Games in Bucharest, Romania. Thanks to this high quality video we can confirm that there were no trampoline springs underneath the 1980 Moscow Olympics floor. The 1984 Olympics FX routines look like a video game in comparison without any grace or art like these women on the 1980s FX with a hard floor. The trampoline spring floor has corrupted the art of the FX since 1984 and it is even worse today with much thicker spring floors. I used to be impressed with Simone Biles until I learned that she was only able to do her floor routine and balance beam routine thanks to springs underneath the floor apparatus and the balance beam apparatus. I bet all gymnasts today are too scared to dare do FX on hard floors with no springs and solid wood balance beams without springs and without padded covers.

    You know, all of the Soviet women were gorgeous, obviously, but I watched several times, and I really think Filatova was as good as Shaposhnikova, and better than all the other Soviets. I find it sad that she always was put up first (81 Worlds too), since with carry over scores, she never really got as much opportunity individually.

    • @nogoodnameleft
      @nogoodnameleft 2 года назад +1

      Thanks to this high quality long-form video it can finally be confirmed that the 1980 Moscow Olympics did NOT have trampoline springs underneath the floor. I wish they didn't add trampoline springs to the floor. Compare these routines with 1984. Those springs are really like a cheat code, and they have been doubled or tripled in size since 1984 which were the first Olympics with trampoline spring floors.
      The floor exercise routines were so beautiful before 1984.

    If I'm not mistaken, this would be the first Olympics where springs were used under the floor excerise. The first springs were introduced in 1978. They were small springs about 2 inchs however made a huge difference in the amount bounce on the floor as opposed to just a carpet floor. Of course today's floors have 8inch plus springs which allows for the big tricks u see now days as opposed to the simpler elements here.

    Fascinating competition footage. However, I found the scoring a bit disconcerting and was disappointed by the omission of Elena Naimushina, who led off the Soviet rotation with a 9.85, setting up Maria Filatova for, at the very least, a 9.90. Which I thought she clearly deserved, especially if Nellie Kim and Maxi Gnauck received one. Nadia was impressive with her long lines and meticulous extension during key pirouettes.
    After watching this, it's clear Elena Davydova, Elena Naimushina and Maria Filatova faced an uphill battle to outscore Nellie Kim who was been scored generously as a retirement gift.

    Davydova made a small but costly mistake when she slightly lost balance making a pirouette.
    Otherwise she would have qualified for the floor final and taken the gold.

      I noticed the small glitch as well. Nellie Kim had a similar mistake in the closing of her routine but the judges looked the other way.
      Elena Davydova, Maria Filatova and Elena Naimushina all deserved to be in floor finals more than Nellie Kim.

      I recently saw an older video where the commentator mentioned it was the first time there was a choice of two different pieces for the compulsory - I guess the countries' coaches/officials decided which would give their gymnasts the better chance. I'm pretty sure there's also footage from earlier in this quad (World Cup or possibly Moscow News, I wanna say 1979) where Filatova and Mukhina have different music, even though they're both part of the same team

      @@carolhutchinson7763 The American boycott was because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, which resulted in a 9-year war -- the infamous war during which the Americans supported the Afghan mujahideen with the very same machine guns the Taliban later used to subdue all of Afghanistan.
