It was a disgrace looking back that a killer whale was kept in such a tiny pool it could only just about turn round 😢

    Big whale. Tiny pool. Shocking.

Worst part is the whale was killed by an intruder too

The whopping 3.5 seconds of orca footage here is gold.

Dudley zoo is still here, and I'm glad to say they haven't got polar bears or orcas. And not many exotic animals.I dont know what they was thinking having a killer whale live in such a small space, thinking they was a ordinary pet like a hamster. Absolutely Disgusting. And the polar bears , just disgusting and horrific to think they would breed polar bears when they know they have such a small space.Glad the UK has evolved smartly.

I was pulled around a pool in a boat by a Dolphin around 1970 at Dudley Zoo, I was 6 years old and remember it well.

Besides the now, better understood reasons why keeping Orca's at any Zoo or water park is cruel and dangerous...what kind of a name is cuddles for an Orca (a.k.a Killer Whale) seems like calling a crocodile "kisses".

I would imagine this was around 1970-71, The Killer Whale Cuddles died of natural causes before they had to address the issue of a new pool being built.

Ben Matthews He moved to Dudley Zoo in 1971, died of an infection in 1974 whilst up for sale as the zoo had been ordered to revert the pool back to a sea lion enclosure and they refused to spend any money on building a pool to move him to.. 6 years old when he died.. Capture Kills!

It wasn't natural causes at all. He broke a rib being "trained" which in turn caused a very nasty infection. Far from natural.

I'm glad to say this was the first and last orca the uk had and that was in 1970s. You can view orcas living free in the Scotland coast areas. I'm so glad now the uk dont have polars either. They should be free. I would go mad if they still had them captive.

They had a couple at Claton pier at one point, one moved to Japan I believe and the other moved to Windsor Safari park to join the Orca they had there. Windsor Safari park all in all had 3 Orcas if I'm correct over the course of their history. Winston that moved to Sea World San Diego, Nemo (who they got from Claton) who died and finally Winnie who moved to Sea World San Antonio when the park finally closed. I remember as a child visiting and feeling very sad watching the show.

Dudley zoo is poorly funded and poorly managed. It should've been closed down a long time ago for the sake of those poor animals.

I am totally disgusted in this.... polar bear’s orcas... what was England thinking. They should be ashamed of themselves.

TLB it was absolutely horrific observing the animals there at the time. I was about 7 years old and have never forgotten the polar bears. They would stand for hours, swaying and rocking and if you made eye contact there was total despair and sadness there. The waves of depression from them still haunt me now and I always felt guilty at not being able to help them.

Whatever happened to these beautiful creatures? Is there still a zoo there?

    • @loriehollies7861

It's still there I live not far from it, it's under gone a lot of refurbishment but still needs a lot of funding. Turns out a worker there was stealing the animals funds :(

Not many exotic animals there now, either. It’s still called a zoo, but is more of a nature/conservation/historical centre (its built in the banks/ foot of the ancient Dudley castle). They have a couple of lions and tigers, giraffes, orang utans and chimps but that is about all of the large/exotic animals they have. The rest seem to be small and farm animals.

    • @joannaclewer1550

Yes it's still there and probably the worst zoo in Britain. Should've been closed down years ago.
