  • Have you had a player so worried about missing out on the game that the player continually holds your d&d campaign hostage? Today's dnd horror stories from r/rpghorrorstories is about a player that regularly cancels last minute so that the party would get annoyed and reroll the campaign to a setting and game system that the problem player would prefer.

Had someone exactly like this. I knew she was going to be a problem from the moment she was introduced to the group.
DM: Hey, [player], this is the dnd group I mentioned before.
Player: "oh, cool, so anyway do you guys want to look at my art?"
This quickly became the norm. Not only would she cancel last minute but every time we so much as mentioned dnd she would change the subject.
We tried helping her put together her sheet for TWO months and she actually made backwards progress. She initially said she had a sheet that was in her room and she just needed to find it. Then, all of a sudden, she couldn't find said sheet but she remembered most of it, so she would just fill those spots in and come up with something new for the blank ones. Then, on the last day we gave her a chance, she hadn't even filled in the name. I talked to the dm about it and he agreed on making an ultimatum. Anyone not ready with their sheet to play by the latest session would get kicked. Wouldn't you know it though? She wasn't feeling well again and tried getting another extension. The dm was really about to fall for this again until I talked him into bringing the hammer down, like he agreed. Wouldn't you know it, it was a lot easier to find someone who actually wanted to play after that.

Yeah. I feel like a player that refuses to do even the bare minimum of prep work for a campaign is likely not going to be a team player for the long run.
I feel like sometimes people like the idea of playing D&D more than actually playing it. At a certain point it just becomes clear that they won’t be a good fit.

at my table the rule is:
    "when majority arrives, we start"

    • @lootgoblinmarketplace
      @lootgoblinmarketplace  10 месяцев назад +5

That’s a fair rule, most the groups that I’ve played with would be able to role with that. Some people really seem to be afraid to miss out.

@@lootgoblinmarketplace in my Group its kinda the same problem.
The Problem player always cancels like 20 hours before game, when its announced 5 WEEKS before.
We cant just play without him cos were only three players with him and playing a campaign designed for 4 or more players

I've watched "beginners DM tips" videos and none really address "That one player." I think its important to be prepared for that situation. DMs put a lot of effort into making a campaign, I think you should be prepared to deal with dropping a player or running without one for extended periods of time.

I agree, so many things happen in life and as a DM it is uncommon for me to have to nerf a session’s difficulty on the fly when I find out that not everyone can make it. The players should always and try to make an effort to attend if they want to play. If a player truly can’t because stuff outside of their situation there should be no hard feelings about it.

"... going to want a private session, with an audience."
That is the best definition I've heard for this kind of player. Yes, I know about "Main Character Syndrome", but that's all clinical and trope-ish, a quick quip before moving on. Spelling it out makes you pause, trying to parse the dichotomy, makes you think it through.
That one's going in the notebook

As a new DM and someone who had plenty of years of experience with playing TTRPGs I started out my DMing with the rule of “for the first two sessions to ensure everyone can make it or we don’t play but after that, if I am not notified at least 48 hours beforehand for one person cancelling. The session was to go as planned and I would plan around their character being gone.”

I do like the idea that the first few campaigns must be everyone but after that it only needs to be the majority with properly notice!

Is there ever a time you do something like Rules of Idolity
Where a player misses a session and is working on something else or had different stuff to do....for example
Wizard or magic based players may spend time in the library, university, doing research, or even perfecting spells........
Then you can roll for effectiveness of your time spent

Every time I hear a story like this it makes me glad that I don't have the patience to deal with people like this.
So won't ever have to deal with it.

We have a player who often misses sessions… but our general house rule is that two or more players need to be missing before we cancel a session, so it’s never really been an issue…

I'm glad that rule change was a possibility in the end ..
in one of my games I have 5 players so unless the session is essential to the plot I've got no problem with missing a player
Yen in another game I play at we're a party of 3, if one would try to Stall in a group that size it would be more problematic to just play anyway with a player missing

I'm pretty fortunate that I never had to deal with this kind of player, since the table I DM for is a high demand one (not a brag about my skill, but a lament so few other DMs are local in my area). Got no room for players who don't wanna play. Smart move on OP for taking that lever away from Neb. Holding the game up like that is inconsiderate of the time of others, especially the GM who puts effort into organizing the game for you all to play in. At our table, the worst it ever got was "hey Subzero, I'm gonna be unavailable for next week" and they would be kind enough to inform me in advance. During such absence we'd run a one-shot DM'd by one of my players, take a break for the week, or continue on without the player if we have to.
    That's what I recommend.

3:20 I'm not sure of this is a joke or not, but in case it isn't, he's talking about Microsoft Edge, the successor to Internet Explorer. It's a web browser.
