There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

"The NYPD was only hitting 30% because they were including police officer suicides as one-shot stops"
    *_Somehow that makes everything worse_*

Here's a '''''''fun'''''''' thought experiment: if you are of a marginalised group of people, place a cop in your shoes for every situation where you or someone you know has suffered some kind of abuse, intentional or not. How many of those would have resulted in someone headbutting lead?
For almost three decades, I would've answered that question with "zero".
About three months ago (at the risk of catching some flak by the extreme right-wing horrors that have no business being this militant after watching a six-part series about why police by its very foundation is racist) I came out as a trans woman, and started presenting myself in a more feminine way.
Roughly two and a half months is all it took before my count went up to "one".
If you are reading this, it means you did not need to use lethal force to survive any of those encounters.
That should give you some indication of how often someone needlessly dies, because someone else has a gun and no accountability. It should also provide some perspective on what things might be like if the tables were turned.

    I don't want a caliper that's 20% off, I want one that's accurate.

The depressing thing is that the reason why we haven't changed is because people don't want to. That's what it'll take. But apparently everyone thinks this is fine.

Do you realize how many episodes of BTB I’ve had to listen to in order to catalogue the missed opportunities of mentioning “Jamie Loftus/hammer”?
    So far I’m at three…

    I'm reminded of Adama's quote, from the Battlestar Galactica reboot;
"There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state. The other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people."

I really want this to expand into discussing the merits of foreign police and law enforcement organizations.
There's this nihilistic, hapless notion that we just can't expect any better from American police culture, it's just not practical, this is just the price we pay for safety and stability and a swath of related bullshit that I just don't buy.
Look at the Carabinieri for instance.
A police force in a LITERALLY FORMERLY FASCIST STATE that, as far as I can tell, is efficient, professional, compassionate and widely beloved.
People aren't scared of them, they fucking deliver food to elderly citizens as part of their duties for God's sake.
I'm sure they have their own flaws and I'd love to learn about them, if any Italians are reading, but I've yet to hear a single negative thing.
There are instances all over the world of police that do a better job, and American is too stubborn, scared, or ignorant to consider studying, learning, and rebuilding this shit from the ground up.

Speaking of The Wire not being part of the problem, Skip Intro's Copaganda video essay about The Wire is very good and salient, worth forty minutes of your time.

That reminds me of a story from the North Hollywood, there was a man in the area trying to convince his maid to stay until it was over, but she was from Guatemala or Honduras and just told him to stop being a wus, and that it was nothing, if we stayed in for something this minor,, we'd never go out.

OY! Fish was used in Mexican food well before ground beef or chicken. Take the taco for example. The first thing you could call a taco was pre-Colombian and probably included fish. Also, quinoa is native to South America. They probably ate that a lot before hipsters picked that shit up.

Ok there has been a lot of awful but not surprising things I have learned from this mini series and in general none of it fazes. I'm dead inside. It's fine. But the part about the dogs floored me. Like the sheer number is something I was not prepared for. I would absolutely go to jail for assaulting an officer if they shot my dog.
Oh a total side note, my grandma has called the cops to shoot deer in her yard before. For context her dogs caught and maimed the deer so the deer were already dying. But.....yup.

I said this on another one of these videos: police militarization violates the second and third amendments of the US constitution.
The second amendment says communities in the US are supposed to protect themselves with volunteer militias, without military (or paramilitary, e.g., police,) intervention. The third amendment expressly forbids military (or paramilitary, e.g., police,) intervention in local law enforcement.
