Agreed, I was foolish and never protected my ears. I lost most of my left hearing 9 years ago, the right one is touch and go. Now I'm always protecting what I have left.
Thanks for sharing your experience with hearing loss. I hope others will see this and think twice about not using ear plugs when they play. Keep swinging my friend 🤙
I am incredibly lucky, having survived the Seventies apparently without hearing damage. Those guitars were way worse than your crash cymbal. I test my hearing annually and pass. I use Ear Peace, which are almost identical to Eargasm, but I mostly use them as an audience member because I am lucky to be playing jazz with people who agree to turn those amps down to unamplified grand piano levels, and I play my drums really softly (on purpose). I always have the plugs at the ready though. I am glad you have shared this because you might well be saving many followers the misery of hearing damage.
Thanks for sharing your journey and I too am glad your hearing is intact. I'm glad you found your ear plug solution and yes, I hope drummers will see this and protect their ears. Have a swinging great day my friend 🤙
I've always played drums as a moonlighting, part-time jazz musician. Fortunately, almost all of it has been with low volume groups and no hearing protection was needed. For the serious side of hearing loss, my primary job was work in an industrial environment where hearing protection is a must and ear plugs or ear muffs were required along with regular instructions for the importance of using them and taking annual hearing tests. For myself, the good news is that I kept my all of my hearing until I retired. The bad news is that my second round with Covid left me with 10% hearing in my left ear and 50% hearing in my right ear. I wear hearing aids now. My audiologist told me that many of his patients have also experienced this. Back to my main message. Protect your hearing! I can't emphasize this enough. When you lose your hearing, it's gone forever. It will not return.
Thanks for sharing your personal journey and I'm so sorry to learn that you lost hearing during COVID! Yikes. You truly understand the importance of protecting what you've got. I hope others can learn from your comment. Always a pleasure to connect with you my friend 🤙
Yep- use hearing protectors . Friend lost 40% of her hearing at one show as a result of years of exposure . Drums can put out 130 Db , like a gunshot . I’ve had tinnitus for 40 years , it drives some people crazy . Wear headphones if needed - actually you can hear better onstage as it cuts alot of highs - and you may be be in line with the speakers as well .
Thanks for sharing you experience and for watching! I agree, you can actually hear better. There's more overall clarity in the sound so it's easier to hear what the rest of the band is playing and play along. Keep swinging my friend 🤙
@@jazzdrumschool Thanks . I really don’t understand why drum instructors, video presentations , music store don’t emphasize this . A lot of beginners, even seasoned players don’t realize the danger their exposed to until it’s too late . When I see videos of Keith Moon wearing headphones on stage it makes me think that he was starting to have hearing loss , maybe that precipitated his suicide . I was exposed to a lot of loud shows from working and being in bands from the 70-80s when it was popular to be loud and the loss of hearing was just starting to dawn on players . My friend was bass player from the Contraction, Cathy Peck who started Operation H.E.A.R. - she started giving out earplugs at shows . You don’t want a few years of fun to turn into many years of misery - it’s not worth it to look cool
Yep, drums are just simply too loud to not use the ear plugs that cut the most sound out. The others will delay hearing loss but not stop it. Nothing is better than the foamies.
