The Avorion Survival guide is a walkthrough series in which I'll take beginner's through the different mechanics and features of the game from getting started and building your first ship to advanced ship building, trading, mining, salvaging, fighting & exploring. The aim is to help you get more out of Avorion, a game which I have fallen in love with.

One of the best Avorion guides I've seen so far... clear, informative and well delivered. I'm enjoying this game so far but struggling with ship design and control. This guide has been really helpful, Thanks!
You didn't mention:
- Scroll wheel on the blocks at the bottom of the build mode to change them.
- The 3D crosshair in the build mode is the center of mass for your ship
- Gyro Positioning: They want to be near the center of mass of the axis they're working on. You can judge this by looking directly through the circle that the gyro shows and see if the center of mass is within in.
- Use of the Block Stats window to keep track of the size of the blocks you're placing

to generate power with Iron, an efficient method is to get stacks of solar panels(at 0.05 width) then copy and shrink them
they work off of surface area and so you can generate a lot of power with a small amount of space

I played this game awhile ago, it was pretty fun, but at the time there wasn't a lot of people playing. Hopefully ziggy can help bring some life to the community
So I got this game five days ago, and I've logged 66 hours so far. I may have a problem.

I've been having such a hard time getting into this game because I don't understand it a lot and this video tutorial is amazing you did a really good job explaining everything very simply thank you
I would suggest using larger scale blocks till you get a hang of building. It's quite useful for nearly all of a build, and you can scale the ship up and replace the ship completely by making it a blueprint, which means you can build things in ratios of system importance. I large bolcked out ship built that way can later be customized aesthetically with more complex and micro scale blocks easily...
I have one design thar is basically built of essentially all systems, balanced around a large core vertical or horizontally oriented slab that tapers down outward consisting of decreasing size slabs like a sandwich of systems ordered by need. You can make about as many slabs as you want and can easily select an entire system to replace it, or change material, swap it with a different system or whatever, and you can stagger them to make more complex simple geometries too, though primaries are always a good call in design and aesthetics, so that's a thing too.
Man, avorion is so damn great. Here's hoping my comment gets you back playing, this game is kind of like that, it comes in waves.

So I recently picked up this game. Started it up one morning, was about 9 a.m. Messed around with building a ship, came here to watch the Awesome Aussie Tutorial, kept building, learning, building, flying, testing, build some more, watch some more, got a drink, used the bathroom... 6 hours later I realized I forgot to feed my cat, take the trash out, pick up my cleaners, brush my teeth and take my shower...Oooops
I just got this game, and now have to learn everything
This was great! I learned a lot from this, please do more of them.

As a rule, I avoid early access, even on already-good games, as I'd rather experience them when finished and polished and not be burnt out by the time they're released. Sometimes, I'm tempted though. And a space game where I get to build super customized lego ships... so tempting. You monster.

No idea how I missed this game, looks amazing :D On a side note, at the beginning of the construction I was like " Meh this is going to be one ugly flying brick, but by the end with the colors and hull it looks pretty dope :D "

First thing you wanna do, is build a small mining ship, give it a captain and put it on automatic mining duty - saves you tons of time and you´ll always have plenty of iron and titanium ...
WOW, I'm 6 years late, but that wasn't bad, and I learned a few things. I played ages ago and mostly did not remember much, so I started a new run recently. I might have done it wrong because I basically just mined iron and titanium until I could build a ship better than my starter, then I'm not sure I think I might have made a couple more starter junkers to mine more ore, but not sure anymore, but it's likely, I had another frame already downloaded from before so I built that ship for a fighter type, and it worked great for many jumps deeper and deeper as I unlocked ore 3, 4, and 5 and then I think I decided my ship was too weak to solo a dozen pirates without my being exploded, I tried another ship and it was not working for me, so I found another ship and built it, it had shields but it basically had no hull, so if the shield is destroyed then next second the ship is destroyed, which did not make me happy but I added a couple different shield improvements and the ship has been doing much better but I have never been in the core but I think my shield only ship should not head in :) So yeah I got another ship, this one I have killed weak enemies with it, but it needs help with more systems so I can add like 22 more guns :) Plus it is also a carrier so I need many fighters I have like 8 miners on the ship for now and no loader, but I should add one :)
Joined a server. Started to build a ship...got 3 blocks in for crew and pirates came and blew me up. Tried for a second time in a different location...3 blocks...dead. Great game. This is on a PVE server. Kinda hard to get to know the game when it kills you before you even have a chance to build a first ship. Think I'll go back to D3.

But I realised the mechanics are pretty good so I just bought it and downloading it

Interesting stuff mate although you did make a glaring error in your explanations. If you put a thruster on the top of your ship you wont get Yaw so there is no wonder you didn't. The reason you should put thrusters in the center of mass area is they give the most thrust possible whilst still keeping the ship in relation to how you were positioned :~)
You should need cargo bay's for the metals and such... its kinda silly you can get TONS of metals being carried on your ship without affecting it xD.

My tactic is to build a small mining ship (no war lasers) then find a captain and let him fly it so I dont have to spend all my time mining and have time to explore or fight

Yep! you can host multiplayer games, run 3rd party hosted servers or join someone else's server

If you use shaped armor pieces (say - edge armor 2) is the protection of the armor just as good on the "small side" as it is on the "big side"? Or does it scale with the shape of the armor, offering nearly no protection on the "small side".

What version of windows/ mac do you use to play this game?
quick question the unloading and loading of sectors you mentioned were your stations stop working when your not in them is that still and issue or has it been solved ?
Seriously the game is good, it does lack a lot of quality of life fixes. but it's good.
Is your ship created in this video on Steam?
do i have to build a ship? is there a way to buy some of these giant space haulers?
you can buy them and you slide bars and choose selections and when you slide the bars the ship your buying changes, like if you click more speed it will add more engines and sliding the bars changes the stats and requirements of the ship the station will build for you, the ship it builds looks like a random NPC ship but you can see a preview of it while you slide the bars the preview morphs in real time
the entire time all I could say was ooohhhhhhhh thats how it's done...
